The FA CUP Third Round - 7/8/9 January *** Spoilers ****

You've posted a whole lot of speculation and claimed "thats all we know" :/

All we know is that an allegation has been made by the Oldham player and we believe it to be in regards to a racist remark aimed at him. You might want to know that Tony Barrett is reporting that some LFC supporters have supported the allegations too.

I can't comment on Football in the 70s and 80s but if it turns out that 1 person has racially abused a player, it then draws parallels to back then?

Indeed.

People being openly racist was well just part and part of society. You could probably swap out how Muslims are viewed and treated to how The Irish were also viewed and treated as well.

In no way do I condone racism or hooliganism but it's interesting reading some accounts of them from the 70's and 80s. When you cut through the bravado and BS, violence and racial abuse were undoubtedly higher in times when unemployment was high, and social unrest was high. The key is that it was young men across the whole spectrum who felt disconnected from society and they created their own groups. Their frustrations were manifested in going for a good booze up with their mates and a scrap.

It would not surprise me at all if you see more football related violence and abuse. The irony is that it is not even football related, that's just the vehicle to do it with.

Tin foil hat on as well, if these allegations were true, it wouldn't surprise me to find out that the person who did it is probably not even a Liverpool fan. It will be someone has took advantage of the Suarez situation, maybe even a fan of another team. Time will tell

I'd be surprised. Not that I particularly think Liverpool have more inherently racist fans than any other club but, as with any club, there'll be a few and I'd imagine other clubs racists could just indulge themselves at their own matches.

Player seems sure he was racially abused. Police and club are investigating but the (heavily drunk) fans, corroborated by those around them, say they called him a "dirty manc *******"

So, guess thats all we will know for now until the police/club release more info.

according to the mirror article a fan confirmed what the player heard / thought he heard also

Not saying that makes it true, but its not as clear cut either :)

Just out of interest is the "heavily drunk" meant to be an excuse?

The only way to stop it is to dock points if a large collection of fans are not controlled by a club. I'm not talking one or two fans but when a section join in then points need to be docked.

If it's one man then there is little you can do but lot's of the vile chanting at lot's of clubs needs to be stamped out. The only way to stop those fans and have fans around them turn on these vile individuals is the threat of points removal.

It's handy than when said quickly, "manc" and "black" have a similar sound to them and quite easy to swap. The fact the he not a Manc is a little suspect. Playing for a club close to Manchester is just a convenient coincidence.

I know this is something you touched on earlier in the season but this is alleged to be an individual comment and while I'm sure this won't have been the first allegation of racist abuse from a crowd this season, I would be surprised if the situation is any worse than in the previous 10 years.

I doubt this idea that somebody went along to the game with the idea to take advantage of the Suarez situation too. The guy that is supposed to have said something was ejected from the ground for being drunk; I think it's far more likely that he's just got carried away and said something stupid in his drunken state, rather than he went to the game (Liverpool fan or otherwise) with the idea to abuse somebody.
