The Fashion Thread... personal tastes, musings, and recommendations

Just a quick one. Does anyone have any experience of the quality of clothes made by "1 Like No Other"? In parcular their jackets but any experiences would be useful. Thank you.

To answer my own question I bought a herringbone jacket and also an overcoat from this company. I need to get them adjusted slightly at my tailors. But I do that with all jackets recently.

However I am genuinely impressed with the quality of both items. Seriously impressed. I will probably order a few more items now. They really are very, very good quality. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again. Genuinely happy here.

After almost 3 years of wearing smart shirts with nice jeans and shoes, our MD has asked me to stop wearing jeans to work. Attire is something that typically passes him by so suspect someone has moaned as everyone else wears cheap looking suits that make them look like insurance salesmen.

So, although I'm not averse to wearing a suit, I don't want to wear one every day and as the jeans appeared to have been the issue, I'm now looking for a nice trouser/chino combo with a shirt and a decent blazer. I've got one blazer/jacket from Next which is OK but not as tight fitting as I'd like.

Where do you guys buy your clothes from online? I live in the back of beyond of West Wales so other than taking a day off and trekking to Cardiff it's online buying for me.

Is it worth trying out one of these firms that chooses based on your answered questions? Thread for instance?

NEXT for Chinos, and ASOS for smart slim-fitting blazers (the own-brand wool ones are very sharp) http://www.asos.com/search/wool-blazer?q=wool+blazer

Have you considered formal trousers with just a shirt? M&S do a large range of formal trousers in different colours/styles/price ranges which are pretty good for work.

Regarding chinos I quite like Charles Tyrwhitt ones but you'd have to take a chance ordering some without trying them on. Again M&S can be decent for this sort of thing without breaking the budget.

I bought that blazer in the blue colour and the brown colour. Both amazingly good quality jackets, got them when they were £100 a piece too so incredible value at £45 a pop.

One thing I can't understand with them though is they are both the same design, fit, etc but just different colours and I bought both of mine in the same size however the blue one feels slightly smaller than the brown one.

Hi guys, starting my new job next monday and I ordered some shirts. Foolishly I ordered french cuff/double cuffs (ie the ones done up with cufflinks/silk knots). There is nothing wrong with this style of shirt and actually I prefer it. The problem is that my job requires me to wear trousers and shirts, I was told you can "wear a suit if you want to" and when I went there for my induction barely anyone wore a suit, just trousers and shirt, and some wore a jacket.

Basically what I'm asking is. Is it ok for me to wear double cuffs without a jacket and tie? Or will I look stupid. I'm leaning towards wearing silk knots and not cufflinks in the hope that they don't stand out as much.

I think I could 100 percent pull off wearing them with a jacket and no tie. But without jacket too, I'm not sure. I do have some jackets, a light grey and a black one. But that limits me quite a lot, as I have some dark navy and grey trousers that I want to wear (they're new :D ) and I really don't want to mix and match trousers and jackets. Think that's way too far.

I've googled around a bit and basically it seems that English and European people think it's fine but Americans seem to think this is absolutely ridiculous. I think I'm just overthinking it but would like some assurance from you guys. Thanks a lot.

Ultimately it's a decision based on what you feel comfortable wearing. The only difference is a little bit of material and the replacement of a button cuff with cufflinks. They aren't major deal breakers. But if you're going to be constantly wondering whether people are looking at you (they won't be) then change the shirts. However if you feel very comfortable wearing them then go ahead. Don't forget that in some offices even people with full suits will take off their jacket sometimes and then just be wearing trousers and a french cuff shirt. They don't look odd doing it.

However there are some style generalisations and it will also depend on how formal the rest of your office is and the trousers and shoes you would wear with them. So would you be wearing jeans, chinos or more formal dress trousers? I'd say that jeans could be tricky, chinos may just about work (not ideal) and formal dress trousers would be safest. Then we come to the shoes; trainers or loafers wouldn't work, brogues might work and oxfords, balmorals or other plain leather shoes would be safest.

Jeans, trainers and a French cuff shirt? Nope.
Dress trousers, a formal plain leather shoe and a French cuff shirt? Yes I'd wear that regardless of tie or jacket.

Then we move onto jackets... what sort of jacket will you be wearing into the office on a cold day or socialising after work? If it's a very casual jacket then it might look at odds with the French cuff shirt. But a blazer or a tweed sports jacket would work OK.

As you say the black jacket will be tricky to pull off with navy or dark grey trousers. The light grey jacket would probably work with either of the trousers because of the contrast. But the navy and black jacket would look wrong in my opinion and there probably wouldn't be enough contrast between the black and dark grey. I assume these are blazers or sports jackets and aren't old suit jackets - an orphaned suit jacket would probably look wrong with any trousers which didn't come with them as part of the suit (a navy blazer is not the same as a navy suit jacket - subtle details are different which prevent it looking part of a mismatched suit).

Definitely silk knots I'd say.

I never wear double cuffs any more, they are annoying in the way they rest both when in a blazer and when on a desk in large part due to the cufflinks as well as the excess material around your wrist, and unless an occasion is super formal I personally think they just look out of place, especially when everyone else is dressed business casual.

So I would vote single cuff with trousers and a smart jacket.

It's definitely smart trousers and no trainers. I'm probably going to wear tan brogues and black shoes depending on the rest of my outfit.

I think I would be comfortable wearing it just don't want to look like an idiot. I think I'll be fine, I just need to invest in some more jackets then I'll be ok.

Thanks a lot.

Any large-footed people here? I have size 12 feet, but I've realised not all size twelves are made equal. Some retailers sell EU size 47 as UK size 12, but what I really need is EU 48, but few retailers sell size 13 shoes.

I just kind of need a new pair of dress shoes this summer and frankly don't want to fork out a small fortune just because my feet are a little too big.

Size 14 here. I use Walk Tall for most use and Samuel Windsor for formal.

Generally I'm not a big fan of camel coloured coats but from what you've listed I'd go for the Next one. I think you have to have a specific style to really pull the others off. Having had a Zara over coat before though I definitely wouldn't buy from them again. Fell apart so quickly, was really disappointed as it wasn't particularly cheap at the time.
