The Fashion Thread... personal tastes, musings, and recommendations

Can anyone recommend some decent brands of winter coats? Originally I was looking at North Face before I realised every chav and his brother has one.

Looking for something warm that will last years. £200-300

I have a Musto (sailing brand) coat which I bought 2 years ago for £350 and there hasn't been a moment where it has let me down. Often that and a thin jumper is enough to keep me toasty in any conditions and it's very waterproof too.

If you only need a suit for tomorrow, is it really worth spending money on a good quality one? In the dark and with alcohol no-one will notice if it's a Next suit with synthetic materials.

I managed to pick up a Hugo Boss suit half price, the fit off the shelf was that good that the tailor I took it to said it would be a waste paying for any adjustments.

Whilst I did need it for that night, I'll be able to use this for interviews and other events so I'm pleased with the purchase.

I'm generally a large in a formal shirt say from Zara. Would I be right in thinking a 161/2 would do it?

I've no idea what these numbers correspond to right enough. Confusing or what?
It's collar size. 16 is approximately a large I believe.

Hello fashionistas - I need help!

I'm looking at purchasing a few Massimo Dutti shirts but I can't figure out the sizing...

Firstly, and foremost, I'd like you to take a moment and ask yourself whether you think spending £55 on a shirt is a good idea for you.

If the answer is no, then wander off to M&S or John Lewis and buy whatever they currently have on sale.

If the answer is yes, I can't help you, and I doubt anyone can.

I'm going to treat myself to a Boss suit this year. A black one I think. I only have 2 suits currently :( A grey DKNY one and a tailor made blue one

Thanks for that :p My entire wardrobe is full of m&s / zara / next shirts so don't worry ;)

I tried one of their shirts on when I was in Helsinki and was sold by the quality/fabric so thought I'd treat myself - I didn't mean to say buy a few, what I meant was couple.

Out of curiosity, where do you lot buy your formal shirts?

Trying to find shirts with a light pinstripe is a nightmare(I tend to avoid heavy pinstripes that give people a headache)

I'm not a fan of those SuperDry/northFace jackets due to the massive logos and branding they almost always have in contrast colours.

It's a shame because the material quality and comfort is excellent on them and I always want to get one every time I'm in the local factory outlets here, but always sigh when I look at the big logos :/

Probably a good thing, I have too many jackets as it is :p

I'm the same with Superdry. Every now and then I take a look in their shops and find something I really like... but can't bear the logos so just walk out again.

Charles Tyrwhitt are my go to, very good quality IMO (much better than TM Lewin) and very consistent sizing (with the benefit of being able to choose fit, collar AND length of sleeve to make sure it's right :))

Plenty of selection on pin stripes. Obviously not worth £60 a shirt or whatever they say they are, 4 for £100 is very good though :)

Hmm you've made me look up the ones that I have...

I'm more than happy with the quality of these, they still seemed significantly better leather and construction than the sub £200 loakes despite being made India!

Well, got my 2nd pair of herrings though these are made in England this time, by Barker :) Lambeth on the 386 last...seem quite generous on the width but very comfortable from the hour I wore them around the office to check fit:

These will be my go to everyday (Well every other day of course :p) work shoe, certainly feel like it's a false economy buying less expensive shoes than this so will see how that goes for me long term...

Both very nice indeed. I agree that buying cheaper can be false economy nowadays. Even cheap fashion glued shoes are expensive. Herring are a fantastic company.
