The Fashion Thread... personal tastes, musings, and recommendations

l bought a ted baker 'alaska' coat from house of Fraser on Boxing Day but noticed it had a small hole from someone ripping the tag off of the arm so returned it:( no more in stock in my size anywhere that I can find. It was a beautifully soft cashmere blend too, quite sad actually!

Can anyone recommend some decent brands of winter coats? Originally I was looking at North Face before I realised every chav and his brother has one.

Looking for something warm that will last years. £200-300

Some of the tags they put on jackets drive my completely nuts... they really risk ruining the fabric!

Define winter coat... just for UK weather? And what is your budget? North Face are a reputable brand and make decent stuff, I have a North Face McMurdo down jacket and love it.

Just for UK weather yes, and as mentioned 200-300. I like North Face, but would rather avoid as every other person on the street has one.

I find it bemusing that it's trendy here to have Patagonia jackets when in Argentina, which is about 10 years behind us in fashion, it was apparently hip to have clothes with things like "Oxford 1764" and "Bolton 1066" on them. Just random English places and years - peculiar! Was a few years ago mind.

By itself, Patagonia is just odd as a brand name. It's just a place... how lazy to just call your brand a cool place. What do I know...

I've decided to start wearing suits again to work again occasionally this summer. I used to wear them frequently but stopped when everyone around me started dressing more casually. In summer months I currently tend to wear a sports jacket (blazer) with trousers which is still smarter than most others around me. But recently I wore a suit to court and remembered just how smart it is when done right (before anyone asks, I was appearing as a witness!) So this year will probably be the year of the suit for me.

I already have a dark grey suit (just a touch lighter than a true charcoal grey) and today bought a very dark navy suit which is being altered. I'd like a third suit while the sales are still running. But which colour should I consider as a third? I'm thinking probably a light grey or possibly a light to mid grey Prince of Wales check?

For reference I have pale skin, shaved greying brown hair, grey eyes and would be wearing the suit with black and/or brown oxfords.

I'm in need of a suit for tomorrow, last minute changes means I now require one for the party  any recommendations on where to get a well fitted, good quality one? I don't mind on cost as long as it's not extortionate.

Your main need seems to be a good selection of suits and sizes in a nearby store. T M Lewin and Charles Tyrwhitt both have sales on and a good selection of suits. Apart from that you probably need to be looking at Moss Bros (also having a sale) and M&S who again will have a good selection of available suits and sizes. You might be lucky with more fashion forward "designer" shops but their choice of colour and size will almost certainly be very limited.

I always recommend people allow time and money for alterations. A well fitted cheap suit can look great while a poor fitting expensive suit can look awful. But it seems you won't have time to get any adjustments done. So your requirement of a "well fitted" suit is tricky. Most suits will look average at best without tailoring and you probably don't have time to get it tailored.

So I guess you have to decide whether you want a cheap suit for a one-off occasion or a more expensive suit that you can get altered to look good in the future, even if it's after your party. But if there is a TML, CT or MB near you then try to get there today and ask whether any adjustments can be done ready for tomorrow.

If you only need a suit for tomorrow, is it really worth spending money on a good quality one? In the dark and with alcohol no-one will notice if it's a Next suit with synthetic materials.
