The Fashion Thread... personal tastes, musings, and recommendations

^^ I bought the Soul Revolver Flint jacket from above. It should be here in a couple of weeks.

In the meantime...

New suede chukkas. I've come to love chukka boots recently and have several cheap pairs. But I'm gradually upgrading my shoes over time to slightly higher quality items.

Loake Pimlico's in tan suede with Dainite soles (from their UK made 1880 range - I try to buy British made products where my budget allows).

I was really looking for a dark brown suede pair to replace another cheap dark brown suede pair I already have. But these came up at a 30% discount and were too good a price to resist, especially considering this colour was also on my future list. I have a leather pair of the same Pimlico's which I absolutely love. I was considering some Clark's desert boots in this colour but these were not much more money after the discount and personally I think they look a lot smarter and are likely to last longer (time will tell).

Guys, go check out TK Maxx asap. I picked up a navy blue Oliver Spencer military jacket pallas midnight, pure new wool, for £50. Yes, fifty nicker. RRP over £300 Selling at £175 online now in sales. Immaculately tailored, very sharp, and just oozes class and quality. Oh yeah, and made in the UK. It is beyond a bargain.

Link to same jacket online http://www.aphrodite1994.com/oliver-spencer-military-jacket-midnight

I also got a Ralph Lauren cable knit jumper for £50, usual price online £100-£120.

There are some nuggets of gold for people willing to sift through the mud to get them. :)

I thought about starting my own thread but instead I'll try here.

I need some shoes to go with a grey three piece tweed suit. I'm thinking brown but not decided yet.

Thing is I have wide flat feet so would prefer to go somewhere that is not going to sell me mass produced suits the "standard foot" shoes. I live near Cardiff but would consider travelling to Bristol if needed.
Any recommendations?

Has anyone visited any of the shoe outlets in Northampton? Are they worth visiting or are they arbitrary discounts rather than sizeable?

I got a pair of Herring last year for half price (£85 for goodyear welted really nice quality leather) but i can't find anything similar at that price point this year, think it's worth a visit since I'm in Bedford anyway? Thinking more the Loakes and Grenson side of things than Edward Green!)

I can't help with the outlets. But Herring currently have the tail end of their winter sale still running. Most of their shoes have gone now but it's worth taking a look at their site. For their own brand shoes Herring sell rebranded shoes made by other manufacturers and they vary by price. Generally they are very good quality though and their mid range and upper range are typically made by Loake, Barker, etc.

Their customer service is superb so there is no issue returning an online purchase as long as you haven't worn them aside from trying them on.

I've been looking at herring most of December but there have been no discounts in the region of 50% off like last year's Brando discounts :( Looking at Loakes in Jones' today I think the Herring shoes I've got feel considerably better made...

No the discounts haven't been great this year. Loake have a range of shoes. Their lower end stuff is made in India like a lot of other shoe manufactures. Their mid to higher end range (often referred to as their 1880 range) are made in the UK and much better quality. Generally their UK shoes are more expensive but that's not a guarantee as the Loake Lifestyle range is quite expensive too but I'm fairly sure is made in India.

If it's made in the UK then Herring will list it as made there. If you're looking at Loakes in a shop then they will say made in England inside the sole. If they don't say that then assume they are made cheaply overseas such as India.

The suede Loake Pimlico chukka's I posted a little further back are UK made 1880 range and are excellent quality.

I'm more than happy with the quality of these, they still seemed significantly better leather and construction than the sub £200 loakes despite being made India!

Indeed. I hope they fit your feet better than anything these stalwarts produce.
The most uncomfortable things I've ever worn.

I bought my first pair of proper shoes not long ago from Alden. They where a little expensive as in general I would buy Geox for around 100 pounds and these where a lot more so I was a bit hesitant. However I'm now inlove with them and wish I could justify a couple more in different styles

Well, I tried to visit the Barker and Church factory shops today and despite nothing on their respective websites saying anything about different opening hours this week, both were closed :(
