The first "proper" Kepler news Fri 17th Feb?

yea i know how you feel, but it'll be 500 quid and stay at this, while the others drop in price, and there's no way it'll be 25% faster or they would have boasted about this..

Nvidia is way too quiet, so try the same speed or 10% faster... maybe 6 FPS, which makes this card at 500 quid in a deep recession a non-starter

they're getting their arses kicked that's why, i mean look at that GTX 590...a disaster or what!

this new card will be way too expensive and you'll have to be a bit crazy to buy it if the 7970/ 7950 drop in prices.... this card is too late coming out, because the others are starting to drop in price already

Fair points. I use 3D Vision 2, which I love, so I am watching this thread and hoping for some "Official specs" as my 560TI is struggling a little with BF3 in 3D. I have the Asus VG278H monitor which looks great with 3D.

Any other cards you would recommend for me?

Most sites have said it will be hard to get hold off. However,Gibbo gave the indication that OcUK will have enough stock so it contradicts this. Don't shoot the messenger!! :p
Yeah, but that's pretty easy to achieve... all they need to do is bump up the price by 50% and BOOM!, stock surplus. ;)

As for the price, as long as it performs well then people will be willing to pay for it. To justify more than £500 I would want to see a performance advantage of 30-40% across the board. I'd pay for that, as I was considering a dual-GPU setup as it is anyway - if the 680 performs that well then I'd grab a single card now and add a second down the road. Again, it's all speculation. If it doesn't offer good value then the 7970 will start shifting in volume.

So far we've had talk of everywhere from £300-600 and performance from 20% slower to 40% faster; factor in the Earth's rotational gravity and we know: DIDDLY-SQUAT!

hang around... i dont think you pay VAT from Europe, but you will pay import duty/ carriage etc..... unless you get it from EBAY..... from EBAY you might only pay 30 quid shipping, because that's all you pay from HONG KONG.

uuuuum interesting !

if the card was this good Nvidia would be screaming from the rooftops !!!
they're not, they're too quiet

i expect the more powerful card will be out later this year, this one due out soon will be a 7970 + 10%

i'm after either a 7950 going cheap or a 7970, but i do have to say this nvidia one sounds interesting too :D

Even I can see GK104 is being built up too much.

A few weeks ago NVidia were late to the party, had terrible 28nm yields, only had a mid-range card in the pipeline, and would suffer heat and clock speed problems. The card was also delayed until April/May

Now, they have a high-end card that outperforms the 7970 using fewer transistors, with lower memory bandwidth, plus clocks just as well. Availability is next week.

One extreme to the other. At the moment, everything seems too good to be true apart from the potential price hike.

yea well said.

but if this new card is only 350 quid, then this is interesting, it's over 500 quid that's a waste

TBH,with HD6850 cards for around £80 to £90,GTX560 and HD6870 cards for around £125 to £140,GTX560TI cards for £150 to £150,GTX480 cards for around £170 to £180 and GTX560TI 448 cards for around £190 to £200 there are plenty of decent cards for under £200.

How about the GTX680?? :D

lmao and I mean that.

I so want it but justification of price is my biggest hold back. £400~ and it matches or beats a 7970, I will get one. £500~ and the same, then I am out.

There is no way my head will let me part with that kind of cash, if it is only a mediocre performance increase. I have put the OT in too pay for it, but seriously if it is £500, then I will be waiting.

Sulking.

Toys out the pram styleeeeee.

What's going to happen is this.

Idiots with too much money will buy Kepler if it's a rip off.

Sensible people will simply have their minds made up for them and go and buy a cheaper Radeon card.

So let's see if Nvidia understand that. From what Gibbo hinted at (IE over £400) they don't understand that.

It's kinda like Fermi. Any one who waited for it either bought it at the hideous prices Nvidia wanted, or were tipped into ATI's direction.

IF it offerse 7970 performance and it really is £400 then it would be cheaper than ATI. Not more expensive. So sensible people wanting high end would end up buying Kepler

The thing I find amusing are the people who are laughing how much it may cost yet have themselves paid AMD inflated prices for the 7970.

Or my logic is failing me ;)

uuuuum interesting !

If you purchase from another EU country then you have to pay the VAT charged in that country.

If you purchase from outside the EU then you have to pay UK VAT plus any other applicable duties.

Your logic is failing you.

At time of launch the 3gb 580 cost £440.

So AMD simply priced at the same, and the 7970 was superior.

I have been watching this thread with interest as i'm itching to upgrade my GTX570 but i'm starting to think that the Graphics world has lost touch with reality.

When did top end Graphics cards (That are not dual GPU) rise into the £400 - £500 price range and how on earth is that kind of price justified? Looking though the massive range of GPU's that OCUK stock for both AMD and nVidia I am shocked at the prices almost accross the board.

The ATI 6870 was about £300 when it launched... still a great deal of money but seems about right for a top end card maybe... The GTX580 was a little more at £350 ish... so what has changed to make these 7970, GTX680 cards shoot up to £450 / £500?

How can a GTX680 be worth more than twice the price of a GTX570 when performance is not stunningly different?

Well, I let AMD kis my crack when they overpriced the 7900 series. NVidia can kiss the same crack if they price accordingly. Whilst I may be willing to pay £450+ for GK110 when it arrives later this year, I will not pay that for NVidia's mainstream ~$299 pricepoint designed GK104, no matter how well it performs. You can make a Ford Focus perform as fast as Porsche, but that doesn't mean you can price it like one.
