It's always been like this, and it always will. It really is as simple as that. Especially when you bring up a flagship product such as the 680.

But these are special or modified - highly clocked cards not the off the shelf products that we are talking about here?

If i'm in the minority or miss guided then fair enough, but I don't think my memory is that bad to be honest.

Indeed and it has become cheaper. Why? because the cards still cost the same all these years later and inflation hasn't affected the pricing.

The fact that you can buy a Radeon 7970 3gb now for £400 ish is pretty cool. Especially when you realise that a 8800 Ultra was over £500 at launch and the 7970 is faster than four of them put together.

Back in the days when OpenGL was pretty much the only way of running a game there were alternatives to retail shelf boxed GPUs. Stuff like 3Dlabs and Revolution for example. However, they cost a bloody fortune, but they were worth it because they ran in OpenGL meaning they absolutely decimated the stuff being put on the shelves at <insert name of crap horrible retail company here>.

It's similar to now. There are CPUs and so forth out there that will poo on the stuff we buy. You pay for it, mind, but they are out there.
 
Just the fact nvidia have gone with these stacked DVI ports just makes me sway towards the 7970 as my 1x which i want to use is under my first PCI-E Slot...

I have been waiting out to see what nvidia brings to the table but after seeing its priced at €607.71 on a dutch website means its going to be around £500 over here... Paying that for a 670ti re-branded to 680GTX to fool people isn't worth it. how much is the 780GTX at Christmas going to be £700+?

Also all this talk about power consumption means nothing i didn't build a gaming rig to worry about how much power it pulls from the socket. You don't buy a Ferrari and worry about its MPG do you? So if thats the only edge they have over AMD well.. maybe thats worth £100 extra to you but its definitely not to me.

I cant see nvidia beating AMD's card by 40% it will be on par in my opinion until the 780GTX comes out but that card will be 10 months younger so you can expect that. But i guess we can only wait and see!!!

8800 Ultra was a desktop card. It was a volt modded 8800 GTX and it was done by Nvidia. XFX made them, EVGA made them, BFG made them.

Well actually no, Nvidia made them and then sent them to above companies to put a sticker on and box before putting them out on the shelves.

What I mean is this - High end GPUs for desktop use have always cost about the same. When I say high end I mean just that. Examples.

8800 Ultra - over £500.
GTX 480 - £450 (and that was only because it was flawed)
GTX 280 - close to £400

Repeat ad nauseum.

Nvidia have always been the ones to break new barriers when it comes to prices. They started it way back in 1999 with the Geforce cards. Up until that time a decent upgrade (IE a Voodoo 2 pci add in) ran around £180. All of a sudden along comes Nvidia with the Geforce card and prices hit new highs. £280 - £350 depending on what vendor you got it from (IE Creative Labs etc).

When I initially stocked the Geforce 2 (Creative labs, black box) it came up to a whopping £390 or so. Now granted I was a small business and so did not get the bulk discounts but that was what I had to mark it up at.

The funny part is that Nvidia can do it and no one bats and eyelid. But when AMD have the audacity to price their products comparatively people cry rape.

It's absolutely hilarious.

Nope, it was around £220, as I bought a XFX 6870 Black Edition on launch day.

You want some one to blame for GPU pricing? get out your green tinted glasses. Up until that time NO desktop GPU cost even remotely close to what Nvidia decided to charge.

The hilarity was that in those days there wasn't even a FPS tool available so it was mostly hype and hot air.

Look mate at the end of the day ask yourself this.

Do you need a 680 or 7970?

If not then get what you need. In most cases a 7870 (when it finally arrives) 7950 as a luxury or GTX 480 for £180 would be more than enough.

yeah well done, the article you linked to shows that Quake III ran at 19FPS on the $150 card and over 100FPS on the more expensive card

no that more expensive card definitely wasn't worth more money

do you deliberately seek out links that prove the opposite point to the one you are trying to make?
