The GeForce GTX 1080 Is The Best Selling High-End Card Ever Released – AIBs Confirm

I also think the majority of the sales will be in the US where prices are slightly more reasonable, and people seem to be overflowing with gpu money.

Indeed. Fact is, if what Gibbo has said is true and OCUK have shipped 1000 in the first 3 weeks, then globally, Nvidia will have sold **** loads. (for a ~£600 gpu anyway)

If true, this is both a good and a bad thing. Good because it means that PC gaming is alive and well, despite what we are sometimes lead to believe. Bad because it justifies Nvidia's pricing and means they'll probably increase the price again on the next big card launch. Personally I still think the prices are pretty outrageous but if lots of people are purchasing then they presumably don't share that view.

It's hardly surprising though, it's like any major technology launch. The hardcore fans will buy regardless of the price and while stocks are constrained demand will seem insane, but as stock starts to catch up and all the hardcore fans have had their fill things will start to level off. Hopefully after the initial few months we'll see resellers start to drop prices to attract the more mainstream PC gamer, and that's when I'll bite.

To be fair I think if people are prepared to pre-order a 1080 they're probably gonna continue to buy one, even if they cancel their orders here at OCUK. Chances are the majority will go to another retailer and still buy a 1080, while a minority will have second thoughts and cancel.

If you're willing to pre-order for £600, you've made up 95% of your mind already.

Not denying that but do preorders count for first day sales?

Eg worldwide might be actual cards in stock and sold = 1000. Pre ordered = 20,000. Which one of those two figues beats the 780 or 980 first day sales?

Personally actually shipping a 1000 in 3 weeks isnt that high and is probably only about 10k worldwide.

However, at one point early on he had over a 1000 orders for the strix alone and the FTW must have been hundreds. Imagine if those cards had been availble how many actually would have been sold worldwide?

Gibbo said close to 5000 hes sold not a 1000. Good going for a high end card a lot of retailers seem to be sold out so its kinda looking good lets see what AMD can do.

It also depends how they are calculating the figures.

Is it based no revenue or unit sales? :)

If it's revenue, I can well believe it. :D

Revenue is better for comparison and more useful to gauge a companies success. Since gaining the most amount of money is what most are in business to do.

I always think basing market share on unit sales is completely misleading & stupid when the products have a big price range. Comparing discrete gpu vs integrated is totally pointless as is comparing an iPhone with a £100 smartphone. Revenue is the only true indicator of market share. When they compare supermarkets market share they don't count the number of items sold, it's all base on revenue. :)

No he said the other day he had "shipped" a 1000. He may well have pre-sold 5k though. ;) But thats no different to all the other retailers without stock.

He hasnt had 5k cards in yet. This week, which has been his best week yet for deliveries he listed a total of 465 cards received. No way has he had 5k of cards delivered since launch date.

So either Nvidia and AIB never expect to see more than a few 100 in the first month or they are just covering for the fact they cant keep up with demand.

I think its most telling that until last week EVGA, one of the biggest AIB, had maneged to ship 10 cards a day for a week to the US only. Thats an all mighty 70 card sales worldwide in a week!

At the end of the day it's all 'we say this' and we believe them or we don't. There's nothing 100% believable unless we see some official stats for units sold.

What we do know is that the 1080 and 1070 have been very successful. I mean if you look at EVGA, I found out today there are about 2000 people in a queue waiting to step-up to a 1080, and that's only people who have bought a card in the past 3 months. Can you imagine how many other orders they've received for these cards? Madness!

He hasn't relceived 5000 cards yet lol. So all depends if pre orders on first day counts towards sales and this headline.

Agreed for a high end expensive card it is very successful. But I don't believe evga thought they would only sell 70 in the first three weeks. The shortages aren't really down to demand as much as lack of supply.
