The Godfather - graphically underwhelming

I was rather looking forward to The Godfather as I am a fan of the movies, and Mafia (the closest comparison) was one of my favourite games. My enthusiasm has been somewhat dampened after viewing the PC screenshots. It looks like a 4 year old game. From what I can see there is no bump mapping, pixel shading, post render effects or reflections. Textures are mostly low res and objects look very blocky. Graphically it looks like a PS2 game ported to PC. (suppose that’s what it is)

A lot of you will say graphics are not everything but in this genre of games it’s rather important to build a rich detailed believable environment.

I was going to pre-order but I think I will wait till after it’s released to hear how good/poor it is. I only have 2 games on pre-order and they are Oblivion and Ghost Recon.

Are you sure you've seen the PC screenshots? A few weeks back IGN had an article on the game, using Xbox screenshots. According to the developers the PC version will look slightly better than other formats.

Personally given that it's a multi-platform title I'm not expecting groundbreaking graphics anyway. If you were happy with the graphics in Mafia then I can't see you being disappointed.

Thats my point, I was happy with Mafia 4 years ago but I would not be happy with it now. Not for a full price game that is.

As long as the gameplay is decent, i'm not bothered.

I bet 70% of people who bought an Xbox 360 have just got it for the graphics. 30% of those will probably shot their Xbox away in a cupboard, never to be used again because of the lack of decent games.

I still think the graphics of Mafia are amazing :).

I can only see the Godfather game been too limited by its console origins. If I'm wrong I'll gladly purchase a copy.

Post the link where you saw the screenshots please.

Remember it's probably gonna be a big city, and the next best in that genre is probably something like GTA:SA, which has even worse graphics. It's a bit unrealistic to expect worldclass textures on a game with such huge level(s).

Also if you check the urls for the screenshots linked by the OP, they are labelled PS2, not PC. So as I suspected, it's NOT PC screenshots he has been looking at.

That said, I find it hard to believe that the PC version will get textures of massively higher quality (if at all) compared to the console versions anyway. The game may look better due to higher resolution/AA/AF but I expect all the content is pretty much identical.

Well done, you win the award for the most incorrect post of the day.

Well to be fair there isn't an killer app for the 360 yet is there?

All just updated versions with prettier graphics. I think Oblivion and Ghost Recon will change all that soon :).

Its generally accepted that xbox live is the killer app for 360. No one else has it, it offers a level playing field of instant online action.

As the OP suspected, it is indeed a PS2 game ported to other platforms. I've come to expect no more from EA. I saw lots of screen shots long before the game was released on various site's and decided I wasn't going to bother with this one.
