So is the PS3 folding client transparent to PS3 owners [apart from the visualisations]?

There is next to no information on Stanford about the PS3 client other than the Cell will do the work and the graphics engine will render some pretty pictures.

I'm thinking it will run as an application or as a screensaver. It won't run in the background all the time, just when you tell it to or when you're not playing a game or doing something else with it.

For all the things the PS3 can do, it is still basically a console so when you aint watching a DVD or playing games on it, odds are it is going to be switched off. That doesn't leave much time for folding!

Sony would like to change the paradigm for "consoles". They don't want to market a machine for playing games. They want to market a machine for all your home entertainment needs, from games to videos. The PS3 is more a part of your home theater system than it is part of your console brigade.

I'm not sure if there will even be a points system for the ps3. It may not be configurable at all, it may be factory set to fold and the user may not be able to select a team or change settings or anything... I hope thats not the case but it seems likely.
Sony has been busted for doing things like that in the rescent past regarding DVD software. I doubt seriously they would run down that path again. Thousands of PS3 customers will care nothing about FAH, so making the client run and be transparrent to the owner / user is highly unlikely.

I wont buy the PS3 for crunching if Im not allowed to controll the output. My XBOX 360 is running like a champ, whish they'd bring out a core for that one as well.

lol I've been thinking that for a long time. I mean how easy would it be to install a client via Xbox Live Marketplace :D

Dunno if you've played with the 360's Media Center Extender stuff... It's pretty cool :)

Oh Yes .. Have a complete Media Center laid out. Have a Dullie as the File Sever < Serves up Movies / Music / Etc. > attached to a GB Switch, then have a Deticated MAC address filtered 125Mb Wirless AP's for each of the respective extenders < Family Room & 2x Kids Bedrooms>.

All our Media files go on the Fileserver, then each Media Centre Extender < Xbox 360 Console > points to the file server for it's content. Keeps the kids off me 40" Plasma in the family room :D They each have 21' Flat screens for Games / Music / Movies etc.

If they bring out a 360 client core, I'll Borg all three for F@H !!!

Am building a MCPC to go under the TV.
I just built one recently, it folds 24/7 for the team.
Currently only my dad knows its a pc. ;) And i haven't told him i could set it up to go into standby overnight, plus is very quiet so no-one knows its on. Works a treat.
If i had said i was building a pc for the living room i wouldn't have been allowed to do it, people have a perception of pcs as being big, noisy, power hungry and always crashing.
Put it in a fancy box, make it quiet and low power and stick a fancy front end on it and they love it, its a different animal to them. :)

Lol. Yep same problem, I said I was going to build a media center PC to go under the TV and oh dear no it's far to noisey.

Just out of interest how did you silence yours?

I didn't have to. Build it around an Antec nsk 2400 or fusion (same case, fusion has a few extras). It has a pair of very quiet 120mm fans, and quiet psu fan, harddisk silencing rubber gromits, rubber feet, and the best airflow i have ever experienced in a case. Ohh and its only around £60 for the nsk. :D

And its not a pc, always remember that. Its a media centre. ;)
Different animal, different perception.

Got the GUI client set up on my "slow" 4000+ SD with the X1900XT I bought from the MM.

Can't seem to get ATItool to work properly. I've disabled the ATI poller and set up an OC profile in ATItool (688.50/792.00), saved it and set it to load at startup but every time I try to load it, the fan speeds up for a second and then dies away and it defaults to 500/600  I'm obviously missing something - if anyone can think what I'm doing wrong. please feel free to expose me as the noob I obviously am :p

Running at 2D speeds, it's taking about 10 1/2 minutes per frame so output isn't going to be huge but still probably a bit higher than the average CPU client output from that rig

You sure you're only getting 10.5 mins a frame, stan? Mine is pretty much bang on 8 minutes, give or take a few seconds.

Really need to get around to remounting my VF-900 so I can actually run my card at OCd settings :D

Erm, Stan the only reason I can think why thats doing that is that you either have some video or 3D app running or the service is still going.

Try ATi Tray Tools using my guide in the graphics forums, thats how mines sitting at 688/838 :)

Thanks Conc. I'll have a look at that in the morning when I'm sober :o

I need some help doing the quick guide to gpu folding. Now that you have all had time to fiddle with it, can you tell me what to put in my quick guide?
Are you all using the graphical or the console, which should i recommend people use in the quick guide?

I know its not really stable enough for mainstream users, but since i've started a guide i may aswell finish it.

Also, what happened to BTI's pimpage thread? Presumably its on hold until a better client is released?
And is there going to be a complete guide covering everything like there is with the cpu guide? Or is this also on hold until a more stable client appears?

This is what i have so far:

-GPU client:
You need:
-An X1900 or X1950 series graphics card
-The ATI Catalyst 6.10 driver
-The Folding@Home GPU client.

Put the downloaded client into a folding@home folder, and then click on it to open the command line config window. Now do the following:
*

Troubleshooting the gpu client:
If you are seeing lots of EUE's, please download the ATItool application and check that your core voltage is set to 1.4V. This has been shown to lead to problems.
Check you have an up to date version of direct x 9.
Any other problems take at look at the official FAQ or start a thread and we'll try to help out.

I want it to be in the same style as the cpu guide. It doesn't have to use the console client if the graphical one is better.

First of all I would say console version is better. Absolutely nothing to take away processing power from the GPU then.

Also, Stanford are currently recommending people do NOT use the 6.10 drivers. There is a problem with them, and until they and ATi can sort it out they recommend the 6.5 drivers. This has the added bonus of a decent set of drivers, as I think 6.6, 6.7, 6.8 and 6.9s are crap :D

Until there is a proper release client I don't think there should be any pimpage in other forums. It is hard enough to rope people into folding without the added difficulties of a 2 week old BETA to contend with.

Can't think of anything else :D

Ok, i'll change the requirements to the 6.5 drivers.

As i've started this guide, i would like to finish it even though the client is a little too buggy for readers of the quick guide.

Whats the console like?
Are the options the same as the cpu options?
If not, could someone spare a moment to list each thing it asks you and the best option, or all the options if you are unsure which is best.

What else if anything has to be done to get it working properly?

Thanks
