The Great Big FFP Debate

Incredible. So despite losing the original case re jurisdiction, Leicester won their appeal on the basis that because their accounting period ended on the 30th June and they were relegated before this date, they weren't subject to PL rules anymore. Who knows what this means for their probable breach for 23/24 now.

Escape on a technicality, if only we interpreted the spirit of the law rather than the letter. Although maybe if the greedy clubs hadn’t formed the premier league outside FA jurisdiction in the first place this mess could have been avoided by all leagues being under the same authority? Maybe when you cynically break away from the games ruling body you eventually reap what you sow?

The Leicester thing is an interesting situation and I suspect this won't be the last we'll hear of it - the Premier League won't like it but reading through the appeal judgement, you can't help but think it makes sense and it's an unexpected scenario the PL didn't foresee - they want to punish them for what they spent up to 30th June but they were no longer considered part of the league from 31st May - so theoretically, even if unlikely, their overspend could be the result of loads of spending the month where they weren't actually part of the league.

I'd expect to see a revision to the rules that define more specific accounting dates related to dates of processing relegations etc. now anyway :p

It has nothing to do with the FA (it would be the EFL) but yes, having two separate competition organisers, with different rules and no formal arrangement between the two certainly causes issues. Leicester already pulled the "we're neither a PL or EFL club" trick last season when refusing to submit a business plan to the EFL too.

Yea I'd imagine for PSR purposes the PL will want to have a set accounting period of 1st June to 31st May. Whether they can get 14+ clubs to agree to this is another matter of course.

Well I thought there would only be one spot for relegation this year with Leicester getting a deduction and Man Cities 400 point deduction putting them in the conference. What a surprise. At this point I wouldn't be shocked if City win and end up getting to sue the league for ruining the reputation of a nation state. At which point they go bankrupt and the Middle East takes over the league.

The EFL have released a statement hinting that they may take up the case against Leicester for their 22/23 breach. If they do and with a potential breach for 23/24, this could backfire for Leicester. Leicester could have taken all the hits this season and started with a clean slate next season in the Championship but they now risk still getting a points penalty this season (for 23/24 (if they have breached, which many believe they will have)), getting relegated and then facing an EFL points deduction for the 22/23 breach.

None of the above is close to a certainty of course but it's mad that this is going on. The PL and EFL need to agree a set of rules that cover clubs being relegated/promoted along with strict timelines for hearings to be heard so that we're not going into the final weeks not knowing whether a side will be deducted points or not. Clubs file their accounts at the end of May or June, it shouldn't take until January before charges are made against clubs - it could be done months sooner, meaning everything is settled well before the end of the season.

Did we expect any other result? It’s just straight up comical at this stage.

City’s case about 1st party sponsorship should start to get leaked soon!!
