The GTR is dead! Long live the cryptolambo!

Hi all!

So weds the car was dropped off for a full service top to bottom, full health check, look for any issues and problems, as well as fit the new exhaust.

With a few bits of trim removed...

You can see the glorious v10 engine! At this point I left them to it as it was going to take at least a day.

Weds afternoon I get a phonecall, que sharp intake of breath....

Fortunately it was just a front diff seal was leaking, somewhat annoying at the seal is a 2 week backorder item, but cant be helped. Otherwise for an 11 year old italian supercar, the condition was remarkably good!

Glad you're enjoying it.

My R8 goes in when I get back from travelling for a full service and a few other things. I think my top end is getting a bit growly, so will get them to look at it. Just renewed the warranty again for 12 months, which at £1,200 is exceptional value for such a car. That provides for 15,000 miles in the next 12 months and unlimited cover bar normal consumables. Needs a geo, better brake fluid (cooked it twice not), paint chip repair and dashboard repair but still pulling strong and going like stink. Currently worth about 45 quid mind.

Thursday popped back expecting to be driving it home today, or well thats how the day started.

First thing head round the door and heyup the rear bumpers off! Excellent... oh... whos that on the next ramp along, none other than my old GTR in for a service :) :) :)

Gareth was happily working away and things seems to be flying... unfortunately the exhaust clamps, as expected started to become an issue.

They had all rusted together and it was only at 12 the old back box finally managed to come off.

A quick inspection of the cats in situ they looked fine:

However the other side showed beginning signs of the infamous failures that can lead to a cat breaking up and causing catastrophic engine failure.

As it became apparent this wasnt happening in a day, decided to get another lovely shot of that engine, and leave them to it:

How do the running costs for it compare to the GTR?

Cheaper.

Lambo servicing is alternating major minor services. A major is £1k and a minor is £100. So averages out at £550 a year.

And yes, I trust Litchos to do the work, ive been hovering for 2 days and they are methodical and precise, if a little slow.

Better done slow and right, rather than fast and wrong!

Like I say Ferrari, local dealership wanted £880 for a spark plug change with plugs supplied.
So I located the genuine plugs in Australia of all places and they were £115 delivered.

Then the supplying dealership agreed to fit the plugs for £275, I am sure I could have founder cheaper, but £275 is fair as I am sure its not the easiest job and its just good to know its being done properly and if anything goes wrong, well its all covered. :)

Ferrari dealers are notorious for 'try and get away with it' pricing.

As I am finding out, first dealer quoted me £880, supplying dealer and sourcing plugs myself, under £400. :)

£500 is a long weekend away in a very nice suite with the Mrs, which is far better than in Ferrari profits pot.

Are the spark plugs difficult to get to Gibbo? Reminds me of the GT86 thread where the engine comes out etc.

Made by NGK but only available from Ferrari, I got lucky and an ex-owner in Australia was selling a brand new set, so grabbed them for £115 as discounted from a specialist they were £240 and Ferrari around £350.

Think he was asking how accessable they are in the engine bay, rather than how difficult they are to buy ;)

Im guessing once you remove the engine bay trim the ignition coils are easy enough to get access to looking at this. Still probably a good hour and a half to 2 hour job.

Accessible, but low down, you'd need a few extensions.
Its not about not being able to do it, am sure I could do it easily.

But if a plug snapped or an issue, then the cost would be huge, if Ferrari have an issue they sort it and fact is they won't as they will have tools made specifically for the job and its a 150k plus car, so just let the dealer do the work especially when price is fair.

Not specifically Kindai related, but it made me chuckle. I needed petrol yesterday morning so went to work via Newmarket. Filled up, drove through then ended up stuck behind a go slow Lambo
Well he was stuck behind an old van ;) Behind him was an old astra and then me. Followed a mile or so, and all 3 started indicating into one of the studs.

I suspect 2 of the 3 were workers on the stud, the 3rd was probably part of the family that owned it.
Just made me chuckle that the Lambo was probably worth 200 times the other two combined yet all going at the speed of the old van. Saying that, the stud in particular if I am right and its part of the family driving the Lambo, then the persons wealth (Arabs) is probably 2,000,000,000 times the workers combined as well :)
