target temp by default for msi seems to be 83c according to afterburner (might actually be lower in the bios and 80c(

if your card gets hotter than that it will stop boosting and may even throttle to below the guaranteed boost.

I suspect your old cooler was poorly fitted

it sounds similar to a windforce 280x I rma'ed for the msi version.

windforce was 100% fan under load and silly temps like high 80s on stock clocks and vaults

put me right off gigabyte since it was noisy as hell and was meant to be one of the quieter 280s

The fan actually stopped working after a week so I had to get it RMA'd. I'm glad it did because if not, I'd probably have stuck with it thinking it's normal and just my case having poor ventilation.

Simples:
High ASIC score = Higher boost clock out of box
Lower ASIC score = lower boost clock out of box but still at or above advertised speeds.

Overclocking = ASIC score means absolute nothing, all down to silicon which you can not tell by ASIC score.

My best clocking 980 which ranged 1580-1620 on air was something low like 68%.

Anyone who bins for ASIC scores is an absolute noob who clearly knows nothing in the arts of overclocking and I think 8 Pack knows more about overclocking than most, did not achieve world no.1 status by being a nooob. :)

from my experince higher ASIC = lower voltage at the same boost compared to a lower asic

you cant completely disgrade ASIC as being meaningless of course you sometimes get a lower asic cards reaching a higher max oc than a higher asic one but for the vast majority of cases the higher asic one will clock higher on the same voltage

user reports on this forum and others pretty much confirm the same

of course getting a low asic card is not the end of the world and you can still get a high OC but having a higher asic card is certainly more desirable
 
The best so far we tried here on Air that's currently available is G1 by Gigabyte. Was not loud at all and performed great.

I think we have Zotac AMP coming today to try which I will do in the next few days.

There are many good cards out there but like i said atm many in germany switching to palits super jetstream. Maybe you can get one super jetstream and tll us what do you think about it.

To get on the Roll of Honour all you have to do is post a pic with your user name on it of your 980 Ti.​

I've got my MSI reference 980ti to 1510 core & 3900 the memory (MSI AB settings).

That's with +15mV on the volts 110 power limit + 281core & +396 on the memeory.

Is this a stable for gaming use settings or should I drop the voltage increase, with no voltage increase it stops at 1430ish on the core, temps at 68c @ 60% fan speed (put my case fans on higher & upped the GPU fans to kick in much earlier)

Share the BIOS when you get it if you don't mind.
Just the gpuz screen you mean? It has been sent anyway, so either tomorrow or Thursday.

I like how many people don't trust companies like Palit (number 1 of card sales), Zotac or Inno3D (both owned by Pc Partner, the second manufacturer as far as sales).

If it doesn't crash, it is stable. Even if it's 1750Mhz :p

From what I found is that, upping my voltage just makes me get closer to my power limit and the only way to stop that is to flash bios, which I can't work out :(

Okay guys you need to run Afterburner and see if your card is hitting the power limit. Indicated by the power limit flag becoming a 1.

If that is the case and the card is hitting no other limit, like -temp, OV or voltage then you need to up the power limit of the card.

You can only do this by increasing power limit slider to 110% once you have done that your only option is to flash the bios. Flashing the bios you can increase the power limit very easily by modifying your bios takes about 2 mins when you know what you are doing. Then flash the bios this will give you a slider in Afterburner that might go to say 140% depending on your limit.

Do not just go adding voltage it is completely pointless and will only increase your temp and power usage within gaining you performance unless your voltage limit is flagging in afterburner.

So long story short - Afterburner will tell you what you need to increase. Don't increase things unless afterburner tells you that is the problem.
