The GTX 980 Ti owners thread.

Just been speaking to Zotac support and they said the following:

Seems really stupid to me. We set the power budget of the card to 400W but you will only ever be able to use 65% of it. I told them that the slider doesn't work to increase the power limit because it still thinks it has another 35% TDP.

'Actual performance will depend on the GPU quality'. GPU quality? As in ASIC?

After waiting so long for AMD's latest offering. I have a Palit 980Ti Super Jetstream arriving tomorrow.

Fist time with an Nvidia Card for a very very long time. Before AMD X1900XT. That Long.

Cant wait, couple this with the Corsair HG10 N980 when it comes out, and its Game On Time.

I don't think they are saying it will only ever do 65%, they are saying it will never reach 100% which is 400W (and yes, the slider will do nothing if it's currently topping out at 65%)
in either GPU-Z or afterburner it will tell you what the reason is... a lot of chips are topping out around 1500 give or take so you could just have reached the limit of the chip

I think that is what they mean however what it is doing is nothing like that. GPU-Z is giving a perfcap reason of PWR when you go past 65%, so you can never get more than 65% with the standard BIOS.

I am making the assumption that the GPU is not making a decision that it is only able to do 65% of the TDP, even if it is, there are quite a few people reporting the same 65% cap, seems highly unlikely that every chip can only do 65% exactly.

To even make the situation more confusing here is the latest attempt at explaining away the issue:

So installed my sli zotac amp cards on friday and played some games overt the weekend. Very impressed I must say.

Gta5, with no change of settings it plays infinitely smoother in game.

Bf4 gets pretty much 200 fps constant maxed out.

Arma3 gets around 680 fps situation depending but t gg at everything maxed and super sampling too.

Out of the box they are autoboosting to 1227mhz which is nice.

Temps. ..The lower card is amazing, mid 20's idle, high 40's-50's while gaming and fans aren't too loud. This is with a custom profile set up.

Top card runs a bit warmer....40's idle and 60s sometimes 70s in game. But this is due to there being a sound card wedged between the two :p will be fine in the new wc build.
That was the only sketchy bit. To actually get the sc into the center slot I needed to push the cards outwards at the mounts as far as I could when screwing in to make it only just drop in. If I push on the back of the top card a little it makes the top fan hit the pins on the back of the sound card :p but it's hanging vertical so shouldn't scrape without external force so all's good!

Get a few crashes and drivers stopping but guessing it's still earlyish days yet :)

Here a question. Got my 980ti connected to a single block connector from my superflower 1300.

The GPU PSU cable has an 8pin and the another 8pin daisy chained off it.

Should I actually be using seperate connections?

Use two separate cables. Dont daisy chain them. I have a Seasonic and it says in the manual specifically not to do this

Then what is the point in the second 8 pin connector if you arent supposed to use it?
im wondering that. as the cable is provided by superflower and has a total of 16 pins at one end, 6+2 + 6+2.

I'll try and see if there is any difference.

I'm just annoyed my card isnt stable beyond 1414 it appears in pcars and im grasping at straws.

Try another game project plop is buggy and doesn't like overlays being run like geforce exp, logitech gaming software or msi ab. Try seeing if you can run the game with no errors with those apps not running. Use gpuz - Sensors tab - Click on each one and set to show highest reading. If you get no crashes then go and read what gpuz reports.

Name me one cheap on Steam!

I don't want to shell out on Witcher 3 or GTA until the prices are down.

I like to game, but don't have the time I use to...so I long ago stopped buying them at launch price.

I have the metro ll and 2033 but ll doesnt seem to stress the GPU much...I don't even get 99% on the open areas.

Metro Last Light is a good shout and demanding. It has a benchmark in the local steam directory, just run it with 5 loops and see if you get any crashes.

I have pCARS too but haven't played it for a long time as it was very buggy on release so let me see if I can cause it to crash with overlays running, it did that even before I had a 980ti.

Edit - Just had a few laps on Spa, 29 cars, thunderstorm, Full Ultra, DSM aliasing with Geforce Exp recording and MSI AB overlays on and didn't have a single crash. Power Target was at 105% max tdp.

My 980 Ti is on MM now lol. Along with some other bits.

Think I'll come back to proper PC gaming in a couple of years when we've had some real progression. Arkham Knight might be fixed by then as well :p
