My Joe's Long chilli plant

does it make any difference if I wait till they turn red before picking?

Went to the West Dean Chilli Fiest, (Near Chichester Sussex) yesterday. Was a great day. tried lots of nice food and it was very well presented.

I bought my first chilli plant and hope to keep it alive.
A basket of fire. Having never tried one, I decided to bite one in half, seeds and all. Big mistake!!!

It has what I assume to be a decent amount of chillis and still more flowering. Don't know how I am going to eat them all. :)

I also got some Scotch Bonnet hot sauce from my favourite local chef. So tasty.

Can't believe I've only just discovered this thread!
I have some fairly nice ones growing this year with some large yields from most of them!

First my basket of fire, yielding a stupid amount, fairly small size but its not a bad thing considering their potency:

Next my rather rubbish Jalapeno, I failed to re pot it in a bigger pot so its spindly, I have had 10 or so from it already and its still sprouting so not a complete failure:

I have 2 apache's this year, I like these as they are easy to grow, the two plants look so different though:

The first one, huge yield and a large plant, though not easy to see in the pics, fruits are fairly small though some larger ones, had a few from it already but its slow to ripen.

The second, great size, great yield and its still sprouting!

Scotch bonnet, doing very well:

My favourite the Cheyenne, loads of large fruits and taste so good

I've harvested a fair few from these already, I'm freezing most as there are so many. I plan to start indoor growing over the winter.

Nice job, i have my plants all in a polly tunnel, and not had any ripe yet, you have done well seeing there outside, mind you they seem to be in a nice spot and the summer here in the UK has been great, not like the last 2 years, i did not have a ripe chilli even.

Some lovely looking plants in your poly tunnel though :)
Yes I fear as the weather is slowly getting worse that many wont ripen outside before its too late, these have been outside all summer though so they have done pretty well, hopefully I can finish them indoors if the weather gets too bad.

Cheers, other years i have brought plants indoors to finish ripen right into december, so you will have no problems finishing them off, i will over winter some of my best plants for a early start next year.

Naga Morich (overwintered):

White Bhut Jolokia:

I also have an 'Infinity' which is in its third season and is a bit slow with only one pod so far. I grew out some boring supermarket annuum but it is setting then dropping. Don't know why I bother with annuums. All grown indoors on window sills in multipurpose compost.

Hi guys last year someone gave me a couple of yellow 7 pot i took the seeds out of one and potted them up in March in the bedroom. due to limited space i kepy 4 plants now they grown im scratching my head a bit as 2 of them have real nice yellow peppers 1 has nothing and the other has real nice red peppers, whats going on there. i dont have a lot of peppers as i think they shot up to fast and are about 31/2 foot tall but not very bushy. any idea what going on how are there 2 yellow and 1 red out of same pepper.

Is there any starter kits for this or something, looking for start growing the hottest chillis I can.

I bought 2 apache seedlings, very common variety, they grow loads of chillies, are small and very easy to grow.
They are fruiting now but not ripe yet and very hot and will probably get hotter!

I bought them about an inch tall in tiny pots. When they got a bit big for the tiny pots I put them into 7 litre pots with some seeding compost I had lying about.
Since they started flowering I give them a weak solution of liquid tomato feed every few watering's.

That's literally all you need, apart from lots of sun.

Guess no one has the answer to my question then. :(

It's to do with Gregor Mendel's Laws of Inheritance and things called alleles which are expressions of genes. One allele gives red fruit and another gives yellow. Depending on the type of the alleles (dominant/recessive) and the mixtures passed to each seed from the parents the fruit of the resulting plant(s) could be red or yellow.

Have a read about Mendel, he was a fascinating guy.

All of mine are ripening at an amazing rate rate now! Gave so many away, more than we could ever use.

I also finally persuaded the better half to have a grow tent, so that should be with us this week at some point, excited to grow indoors all year round, Twilight and Bhut Jolokia are first on the menu, plus some sweet peppers.

Tell me about it! I have tried putting a copper wire fence around my plants, broken egg shells, sharp sand, Diatomaceous Earth and coffee grounds and nothing seems to stop them.

I have tried the beer trick before and after a week i think 1 had one slug in there. Total waste of time and beer.

Also slug pellets dont seem to do anything either. But tbh i'd rather not use chemical methods around food plants anyway.

I hoping mine will be slug free, they're all on top of a 6 foot wall, and it's not been damp enough for the slugs to be about.

My diablos are looking great at the moment, lots of huge peppers, the bhuts, fatalli and 7 pots are only just starting to fruit though, so I'm hoping the weather holds for at least another month, and we don't get frosts coming early this year, cos at this rate it's going to be November the final harvest, and I've no where indoors to pamper them.
