I was wondering the same thing, not that I have much choice as the natural light in my house is terrible, although mine are just starting to ripen so hopefully ill get away with it.

Hi Guys!

Here are my Chilli's first time grower. I sowed them way too late really (about two/three months ago) as I didn't know what I was doing haha.

They were coming on well I thought but the two big ones are starting to wither I don't know if I have over watered them or something. Any ideas?

From left to right

Tabasco (bottom), Chocolate habanero (top), Jalapeno (bottom), Tabasco (top), Jalapeno (bottom), Numex Twilight (top), and two more Chocolate habanero's (bottom right)

Most likely a mixture of overwatering and the newly introduced cold. You should only water when the soil is dry. Check the top and the bottom before watering. The bottom will sometimes be quite wet even if the top looks dry. You can almost let your chillies start to droop before watering. They'll spring right back after that.

Yellow leaves are usually a sign of overwatering and not enough nourishment. What compost did you use? Look into getting some Chilli Focus chilli food. They'll love you for it :)

Chilli Focus ordered! The compost I used was just some multi purpose cheap stuff I saw on offer at Lidl :D which is rather crap quality!

I Watered the lot of them over the weekend as they were bone dry and they all perked up but then the Jalapenos (biggest ones) drooped again. I watered the one on the right yesterday to see if it helped and it seems to have perked up again this morning so maybe they were just thirsty?

You got grow lights? You've started them well too late.
Although if you can get them big enough, they should survive till next summer and have a head start.

I know yeah haha oh well! Might get some grow lights if someone can recommend any but yeah I'm just hoping to keep them alive over the winter now :D

Thanks for the tip with the Chilli Focus! I gave them all a dose yesterday evening and it seems to have perked them right up by morning.

I did move them to my brothers window though which is warmer than the conservatory and they should get a bit more day light :)

I know I wont get any ripe chillis as I planted late but I'm looking for some advice. My Naga Jolokia plants have gone mental, I was wondering if it's ok to cut them back because the size is getting ridiculous now. The stem is like a tree, I never thought these would get this big! The leaves look a lot bigger than any I've seen on pictures too.

Good size plants, never be afraid to cut them back, same goes for any plant really. Most people worry about preening them but my other half who is a very keen gardener hacks at plants like you wouldn't believe and all are fine and better for it.

My ripening has slowed right down now due to the drop in temperature, I will move 3 or 4 plants inside from tomorrow in the hope they finish ripening, then I will over winter them. Unfortunately we only have room in the bay window for 3 or 4 so the others are doomed!

Sorry I didn't mean the main stem I meant the thicker bits coming off the main stem, I wondered if I should leave those and cut the bits that come off those, they are much thinner. Do you literally just cut near the base?

You could just cut just after where the steam first forks.

I did that with one of my monsters last year. It is has grown back this year like crazy!

Well I'm glad it's not just mine then, thought it was a mutant. A lot of my flowers drop off from the stem but I think this was due to me not pollinating them. Forgot that you had to do that for indoor plants! I actually have one really dark green chilli that I'm hoping will ripen, it's the only one at full size, the rest are small. I will do some trimming when it gets colder.

Chillis are self pollinating, no need to do anything, i have never done this, and always get 100's of chillis(indoors or outsde), and at same time mine still drop 100's of flowers, thats nothing to do with them not be pollinated, usually the plant saying its not ready to produce yet, or the other way around, in that it has enough flowers on already, or one of many other reasons, not enough water,to much water,to hot,to cold, can be anything, its a problem for all chilli growers, i get massive flower drop every year.

I have read conflicting information on this but it would explain how I have some chillis because I only started doing it recently. I didn't think I'd even get the seeds to germinate let alone grow into what they have done! I am looking forward to see how well they do next year.

Well it is a fact that there self pollinating(i and others i know have never bothered to shake plant etc), but sometimes the flower inards do not touch, so by all means give them a shake, will not do harm, but yes, if you read on the net, some people do say to shake or use a paint brush or your little finger to help them along, but i aint got the patience to do it to 100's of flowers myself :)
