The "if you don't look 21" rule

Not if the door staff know who they are and what they look like they won't get back in unless they can produce a valid form of ID.

Surely they shouldn't get in the first time round without ID though?

Personally, I think that once the doorman had checked and let you in, the bar staff shouldn't be questioning again.....
They might be employed by separate companies, but isn't the point of hiring door staff to stop underagers getting in?

I once got refused cigarettes in a little newsagents in a small town near me because I didn't look 16. I was 21 at the time! lol

The woman refused to believe I was 21, even though I provided my credit card (which of course are only available to over 18s) and reminded her she'd just seen me park my car right by the entrance to the shop.

She still refused, so I offered to sign a bit of paper so she could check the signature on the card. The only bit of paper she had was a hand written sign on the display by the till for some stuff on discount, so I signed on the back of it.
She then agreed to sell me the cigs, but wasn't happy when I then told her I wanted the bit of paper with my signature as I wasn't about to let a complete stranger have a copy of my signature on a blank bit of paper. She had to to tear the sign, which then wouldn't stand up again cause I'd deliberately signed against the edge....

The system isnt perfect, door staff are only human after all which is why we ask the bar staff to check as well as.

what I have seen happen is that one with ID goes in through the door and then opens a rear/fire door for his mates, by the time anyone realises they have mingled in with the crowds

Thats a problem we have because we have so many fire doors we have to stick door staff on fire doors even if the place is empty because people try and let their mates in.

I understand that, but I still don't understand that you said there are people who are asked for ID, don't produce it and are still allowed in. That makes no sense at all to me.

Sorry i must have got my words mixed up, if someone gets let in because they havent been asked for ID and they get to the bar and get asked for ID and they cant produce it they get ejected from the premises and their description gets taken down for future reference. Thats what i meant.

Ok, that makes more sense :p.

EDIT: since you said "anyone who doesn't have ID... what drinks they order" it implied to me that you knew they didn't have any but served them drinks anyway, just to clear up the confusion.

This has happened in our local drinking hole, they recently changed management and now its a stick over 21s policy. they also got rid of live bands, karokee im not sure about the sports tough. they previous landlord had the if you dont look 21 rule and that worked fine. nobody underage (well maybe some of the ladys but that always happens) but the vast majority of the people who went there are 18-21 the guys just gone and shot himself in the foot imo. although obviously he cant be doing to bad as its not changed back yet

getting ID'd in ASDA buy a 16 year old is annoying as hell though. and im quite sure i look 21, me and my girlfriend have been mistaken for a married couple in our late 20's but people that come to the door asking you to sign up to stuff!

because lots of 16 and 17 year olds can get away with looking 18, but its far less likely that they can look 21.

i reckon its a great idea personally

Entirely agree with you.

<3

I enforce the 'Think 21' rule when i go on a check-out at work.

For the sake of a 5 seconds getting out a driving liscence, I couldn't care less to be honest. Think it's a great idea.

I confronted a member of bar staff on this when it happened to me (iirc was 21), I asked why and they said if I gave them lip they would bar me and escort me out (asking why is apparently lip). Subsequently I left shortly after, don't feel I need some lesbian feminist student on a power trip giving me lip.

As well as impossible. As much as it is illegal to buy alcohol if you are under 18, it is also illegal to sell alcohol if you're under 18. If someone under 18 is working the checkout, they have to get permission to sell the alcohol to you.

[/pedant] :p

Brings back a few memories! Were all legal now though and its much better on a night out!

Theres still a few places about in sheffield which arent very strict with underage drinkers though, dont know how they get away with this!

why does anyone care about being asked for ID? its hardly a burden, especially when your stood at the bar and you need to get cash from your wallet anyway

I'm only 18 and i think it's a fantastic idea, but t's a shame that i rarely see it enforced. For example, the other week i was in a club in town, and there was a guy there that i know damn well isnt 18 yet, but they didn't ID him. He ended up being kicked out for trying to start fights with random people, touching girls where he shouldn't, and being abusive to everyone in his path, and the bouncers.

I never went out until i was 18, in case i did get ID'd, now that i AM 18, i very rarely get asked for ID, which is bizarre because i don't really look it :p

Needs to be a lot stricter imo

Same here, though I only just turned 18 and I didn't get ID'd in Somerfields the other day buying 8 cans of C'bert export and nothing else.

They can still ask for ID :p

I usually have my ID in my hand ready when I approach a club or bar. It's not much of an inconvienience so I don't really mind. I expect to still have to show ID even after I'm 21 because I look so young. Doesn't really bother me.

Where I worked a few months back at the local offie "Bargain Booze" we also took part in the under 21 campaign, the fact is a lot of people who are 16-17 can get away with looking like there 18, but they dont look 21, helps the compny more, so they dont sell to underage and get fined for doing so.

But the local co-op took it to far, they asked my for ID as i looked under 21, fair enough i was only 19, showed it to them and they refused to server me for bottle of wine as i was under 21.... I kicked up a fuss saying I was 19 and therfore old enough to buy alcohol, after half hour of arguing they finally sold me the bottle of wine and gave me an apology...
