The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

Thanks for the advice roady, I'm not comparing FTP to anything, I changed tyres a few weeks ago and FTP went down slightly, so I know it is based on my setup, as I could use someone else's trainer and be at a completely different figure. I'm only using it to compare stats week on week.<snip> Edit:
I think I need to work out how to calibrate my trainer, I don't think I should be seeing this much improvement in only a few months..
You're using a wheel-on so take the numbers with a very big pinch of salt. For example I went from a wheel-on smart trainer (Vortex) to a direct drive (Flux) and 'lost' 60W from my FTP. Probably 10-15W of that may have been from the willpower I lost with it from the huge decrease in results/placings. Also the way they're ridden can be quite different. The wheel-on you'll generally overpower and wait for it to 'catch/spin up' before it can provide enough resistance, you don't get that so much with the direct drive, it's a constant battle as resistance comes.

But it's also not uncommon to get big increases when you first start out. The further along you get they are far smaller and further between...! ;)

FTP is one of those things - it's a training metric, ideally for comparing your efforts on the same setups against each other. To train at the right level with your training sessions. But then Zwift use it to calculate W/KG figures which then split riders into categories to race... Where those figures/metrics/setups are directly compared against each other for the 'results'.

Busy week at work, however, while I'm not improving my FTP I'm getting more consistent at hitting it. TTT team qualified for the platinum League on Thursday and I now have the pressure of qualifying for the ZRL WC play offs on Tuesday.... whoulda thunk virtual cycling could be so stressful :D
Awesome, congratulations and how did it go!? :D

Who are you riding for, horrible course for your first in PL. Tonights should be an easier TTT course.

DS'ing matters and helps quite a lot in the TTT. The end of ZRL Tuesdays being a TTT there where DS's drafted in for each of the teams riding for 3R. Normal racing each of the teams has a 'lead' and they're expected to DS but it's more like a road captain.

The Pro team always has a DS when they ride/race a series, sometimes two!

I recon I'd smash some of the guys to bits on the road but struggle on Zwift.

Did the same APR race with my boss again but went in B and him D with a 10 minute gap. Felt hard for the 1st lap, settled down a bit on the 2nd and 3rd where I ended up off the front with two ZP riders. I think we only ever got a bout 15 seconds on the bunch but it was hard as **** as shown by my power/HR https://www.strava.com/activities/4879322903/analysis/1680/2150
Get yourself a Direct Drive this year mate. Nothing else for it and I'd advise anyone to do the same once they're seriously riding and racing Zwift. On-wheel numbers/setups are a joke, almost as bad as those ZP riders. There was even talk a little while ago about the 'smart' on-wheel trainers even being classified as ZP to exclude them from results. You'll ride better with it as it's much closer to how riding outside is, but you'll also likely see quite a drop off of power with one too, so just be ready for that.

Also, first time in a race over 30 minutes that I've done better than 2.3 W/kg and I managed 2.7, so the training is clearly working.

In the race, normally I monitor my position, like you can see in @Jonny ///M screenshot. Mine didn't have that yesterday and as I crossed the line it just gave me a distance and time, not a list of everyone that had finished. Have I turned something off, or do some races just not share info?
Good work and well done! Just realised I've not ridden Box since June last year lol :o

Different races have different setups as Steve says, that one is quite a bit different to most due to age cat splits, so all the work is done afterwards by the Group Admin on ZP for the 'actual' results.

Yeah, I can't really figure out what they've done though. By age range I was B, in the results I'm group D, which would match my usual group based on W/Kg, but most in D are pulling 4 W/kg?!

We managed it :D Finished 3rd in the TTT which meant we retained 2nd in the league overall. Now anxiously waiting for the ZRL email

ZwiftScotland Thistles Mocha team, we've lost another rider to an upgrade so though fingers crossed for a good performance :)

Totally agree on the DS, I will be drafting them back in for Saturday's TTT!

Maybe an odd question, but does anyone know why I have virtual runs affecting my Power Profile on Strava?!

Looking on Wattsboard, I hit a new 20m power high last week at 294W. On Strava I did 342W last Feb 1st! When I click on the 'ride' that gave this, it's a Virtual run?! (I mean a good one, one of my better runs, but why is that changing my suggested FTP on Strava?!) Any ideas?

Back on the Evo CC short races, lead in plus 3 laps of Volcano flat.

Upgraded to B, pretty much just pack fodder! :( I’ve done enough racing now to make the front bunch of 30, then just hang on! Made it up the short climb at the start/finish three times, but a late lunch/lack of fitness gave me a stitch on the last lap and while I was in the red zone we passed through a group we were lapping uphill through the volcano and I dropped off the back.

Rode the last 1.5km in easy with the D guys, finishing 16th or something. My 20 min power 2w up from last week but it felt a lot harder.

Perhaps higher average power and last week was more punchy on the climb/sprint but the normalised powers are only 10w different. Anyway all good training! The race length is perfect for a club 10 TT!

No idea, those age split ones are a bit of an unknown to me, sorry! I stick with usual cat's as understand them! ;)

Awesome result and good team, well done! @Jonny ///M also riding for ZwiftScotland I think? Seeing many more of their teams around the last few weeks (I'm generally in Frappe). Good stuff!

I would guess that Wattsboard can't tell the difference between a ride and a run!? Maybe can you remove the runs from it?

Back where you should be! And welcome to my world! I'm resigned to being a middle of the B pack puncheur rider. But most races are either too hard or too flat for me to really do well.

I know 5 laps of Astoria Line 8 tomorrow is going to be utterly brutal in the 3R Endurance series with me likely riding most of the last hour solo! :(

A friend invited me to join him and another friend in a (Cat C) race, early yesterday morning. I don't know what his friend did, but on comms he was saying 'Why am I in Cat B?!'...'Now I'm in Cat A!'...'oh, I can't get back in...' as the race started... lol (He's new to Zwift)

I think it's the first time I've raced in Cat C in something that's not a Crit, so wasn't sure what to expect. I got in a group of about 10 who were mainly Cat B and was holding steady at around 50th out of 175. It was London Flat, which suited me (as a heavy git) so I could just keep the power down and keep up. With 0.5 miles to go, I made a break for it, but clearly my inexperience of racing showed and I'd gone too early. Three of the bunch came by with 0.3/0.2 to go and although I started to reel them back in, I couldn't catch them. It turns out I think they were Cat B, so no loss of places :)

Zwift showed me as 6th out of 25+ in Cat C, which I was happy about, but ZwiftPower has me 2nd! I think two were pushing 3.8 and 3.9, so clearly shouldn't have been in C and I guess got reclassified and at least one of the others didn't have a HR monitor, so I guess was not classified at all? I also noticed, 3rd and 4th were only 2 and 4 seconds behind me, so nice that my sprint finish got me the silver :) Great fun! (I also set another new 20m record of 303W)

I actually think, looking at my own results over the last month if I didn't know better I would think I'd started doping or something! Up to January this year, the best I'd done was 2.3W/kg. Yesterday morning I did 3.1W/kg. Part of it might be now having a direct drive trainer, a cleaner transfer of power, but at the same time, it's a pretty huge improvement which I would like to think is down to the structured training. Definitely makes me think I need to keep some of it going indoors, even when the weather improves.

I can understand that.

I think I mentioned this before, when I was growing up in the 70`s early 80`s every weekend their was some kind of amateur cycle racing going on. Then for whatever reason it all stopped. My gut feeling it was idiot councils demanding more and more red tape and such and the people that ran just decided to call it day and the youngers then had other distractions like the playstation :)

A favour if possible, does anyone have the little thru axle bits for a tacx neo/flux. I've got the adapters for the qr but cannot find the bird that screw on to the trainer itself. I only need them for a couple of weeks if anyone would be so kind? Will obviously cover postage/some beer tokens for the trouble.

Total noob here. Still getting used to this riding a bike inside lark, but needed something to burn the COVID spread and also get me fit for when I’m allowed to get back out mountain biking with my mates. Got myself a Kickr v5 which I’ve paired with my old hardtail mtb. Had it for 2 weeks now and done just over 200km. Signed up for Zwift also. Finding it totally different from usual type of riding, just keeping the pedals turning for an hour plus at a time is strange!...... :D Did the short ftp test, 198, so lots to work at!

Great start, I was the same. Non stop pedalling just wasn't normal to me. Now I can comfortably manage a couple of hours, and being out on the road is so much better. Keep it up

Decided to dual record after all the chatter in here about it. Felt like I was riding through treakle but I'm not sure if that's just my legs or because there was a delay or something with the setup?

Second time up box hill I was I was with my wee group sitting about 20th, first over the top and got it up to 36mph to tuck and suddenly the group blew past me with no hope of me catching back on. WTF Zwift. Finished 30s down on the group I was in annoyingly.

I think this link works?

That works. Big variation between the 4iiii and the Flux!

As long as it’s consistent that doesn’t matter though for training purposes & you’ll be using the 4iiii on the road.

My Neo is within 1-4% of the three power meters I have based on hour long tests.

I did adjust the Quarq slope on my TT very slightly following their guidance for that last few %.

I basically don't use the vortex, 4iiii on the road and I pair that to zwift for power/cadence.

I feel a few folks are using similar setups that make them look better on zwift. I did it for a few months but I knew it was inflated. Doing the TTT shows it up and it's a few people agreeing in my circles.

I'd be 4.30w/kg going by my wattage and my real weight of 77kg Vs actually being 4w/kg or just under on the 4iiii.

Found these in the end, as I've got a million PMs I'm trying to establish what the sort of difference is between my bikes and using the Neo 2 as my baseline. Got the CX bike on there this morning with a Quarq which is nice and close @ c. 3% (after I removed the first bit of the ride where I forgot to start my Garmin.

Bit better than my Rotor which is about 5.5% out.

A few people? Way more than a few. It is absolutely rife in Zwift for it and only getting worse unfortunately.
There are folks on smart trainers that have discrepancy like you see and even worse and are getting away with it because there is pretty much nothing to stop them.
Yes your dual has differences but in all honesty for a wheel on trainer it's actually not THAT bad. With you training to the 4iii and using that as your power source in the game then you are doing nothing wrong. Vast majority of people in your shoes would be using the Vortex reported power though which is fundamentally only lying to themselves.
