The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

Change of course this week, on the Oh My Crit! Race. Group stuck together fairly well throughout, was trying to keep towards front of the group and seemed to surge to top 5 regularly, same as @Lethal` said, but managed to plug my best ever 20min power of 318W on training peaks, despite Zwiftpower saying I averaged 320W for the 27min ride. Felt relatively comfortable throughout the ride, yeah it was up at the top end but not so hard I wanted to give up. Quite a good course with the little lumps every lap meaning it was hard throughout but I wasn't getting dropped with my feeble short term power :D Came home in 49th with some sort of sprint at the end :p

Nice to see the windows app now means you can change map without closing the app down!

Yeah so I updated.

Worked great for 48 minutes and then just closed/crashed the app with no error log or message.

You Can’t run the log through zwiftaliser to check your ant+ connectivity anymore as Zwift are hiding/removing that data too.

Big thumbs down! Uninstalled it and reinstalled it to see if that fixes it after a month of it being fine... rolleyes

With the Trainer issues and the couple of really high numbers on my ZP profile from them (+ bad calibrations in the cold) I managed to convince Zwift to 'filter' out results before a specific date, treating it as a 'Trainer Upgrade' so my Profile only shows my more recent results.

It was tricky and I actually came close to getting my entire ZP account wiped out before a specific date (seems if you mention bad calibration they assume everything before was!). But thankfully got it sorted, now under my profile you'll see my older stuff (including those 'bad' results) under 'Old Results' tab. With the numbers not going into the ZP calculations of my category... Which was the main thing I was after. So I'm now a C cat! Ooooops!

https://www.zwiftpower.com/profile.php?z=52661

Probably sandbagging a bit being a C, but the numbers will soon put me back in B where I belong... Once I have the rides on my profile anyway! ;)

I feel silly saying, as it seems obvious and I assume you're looking for a more detailed answer, but I assume you've tried workouts? I've been doing them based on my 4DP results and they seem to have really helped. Most are 40 minutes to an hour, so 4 or 5 of those a week doesn't seem a big time investment?
Don't feel silly pointing out the obvious to me... Especially when I'm having a moan! :D

You're totally right that some structure and proper 'training' would probably give me more consistent results, but I just find that SO boring that I'd just not enjoy it. I struggle to ride 'enough' as it is, getting on the bike as often as 4 or 5 times a week would be impossible. Family & life just get too much in the way.

I think that's the root of my problems really, I'm fighting hard to get consistency, as generally that from racing gives me the feeling of progress and the excitement of racing makes me structure things. Without the excitement, I would lack more willpower and just be riding less, while also enjoying it less.

@Roady just going on and racing at the same old power will not improve you unfortunately, you need to drop the races and start doing some stuff where you're over that threshold you've been pushing in races for 2-4 minutes, bit of recovery then same again, if you're doing a 20min warm up then into those efforts 7 or 8 times then warm down, theres your hour and improvement will come.
You're not wrong, but where I'm at right now, the 'racing at the same old power' is hard work for me, I'm deep in threshold/VO2 for much of it, so see gains from it, but then I'm so short on actual riding time that when I miss a couple I slip backwards.

After getting things stable, ramp test on last tuesday. I've ridden 4 times since then and 3 of them have had FTP increases. Not unexpected as the ramp test was a little on the low side.

I think you're best just being honest with yourself, I couldn't have a higher FTP with doing less on the bike.

What @SoliD said is true, I keep riding at or around my FTP so won't see many gains. I want to try get some intervals in above FTP but not sure where to aim. I see people doing 2 X 30, 2 X 20 and 3 X 8.
I'm reaching that realisation, but gotta keep 'aiming' for something really. I probably am riding a little aimlessly, I don't have any specific goals or times to work towards (like upcoming events) so little point structuring towards something until I do. When we can I really need to put some Sportives/targets on the calendar as that will help!

Maybe switching one of the 'race' nights to an hour of intervals will be what I need. To be fair the TTT's are much like that anyway, especially with chasing stronger riders while already deep in threshold!

Start doing some regular short ERG workouts that include Z5+ efforts, for example, Emily's Short Mix (decent practice for attacking three hills in quick succession outdoors) https://whatsonzwift.com/workouts/less-than-an-hour-to-burn/emilys-short-mix or https://whatsonzwift.com/workouts/less-than-an-hour-to-burn/grin-and-bear-it .
Good pointers, it's been a while since I did emily's short mix. Will hunt it down and do the other too!

Think that's one of my longest Zwift sessions, did a 70KM 3R race, 4 times over box hill, bloody hard as hell. Strung out the first time out and then settled into a group of about 55-75th place for most of the rest of the race, which was fine, although could have put more power down on the flat, but just didn't have the peaks up the kicks like everyone else seemed to which seems to be the main reason why I get dropped in these races, but then that's positive for the upcoming TT's if I've got good consistent power. Died on the last kick with about 5km to go and got droppepd and just rolled through to the end. Good workout though
That was the Saturday morning '3R Endurance' Race series that's currently running. I was there, but raced in C this time (after being a back marker for the previous 2!). I got binned the last time up the escalators, had done them perfectly and strung the group out every (4) previous time, but the last one didn't get the cadence up enough so nearly came to a standstill... And got utterly dropped!

https://www.strava.com/activities/4938356775

Course was PRL half. First time I've done it I think, only doing 2 and possibly 3 Box's in anything before. Had a good one, brutal pace like you found. Didn't try too hard to stay with the front group so settled into chase. First time up was quite tough as a handful really put the hammer down and split the group. 3-4 of us who'd worked on the flats in supertuck caught them on the descent. And that was pretty much what happened all race. 2nd time up we let them go and had a much easier ascent, actually didn't catch them until just before the escalators that time. 3rd and 4th time where much more decisive and I was really happy with my consistent times up there - was really at my limit, but able to recover and push on.

Just really proves I'm a C rider for these longer efforts - racing for a top 30th place there, although ZP results put me in 12th (very happy with that!). FTP increase from 239W to 247W!

Companion app. The biggest pile of **** I have installed on my phone. It has sucked as bad as this all along and never got any better. When I see someone DM me in Zwift I hate it because it means I need to try and use Companion to reply :p
HAhaha, guilty as charged! ;)

Yeah so I updated.

Yup loads of people with that on Thursdays ZRL TTT. Including me!

Quite why Zwift decide to roll out any update the day before the biggest weekly events on there (ZRL TTT) is beyond me.

I was literally waiting for our 6 minute timer in the pen (after being in there for 15 mins warming up). 10s to go Zwift fires me over the Start/Finish (doing 0 W), then as timer reaches 0 the whole damn thing closes! Reopen and I'm in Innsbruck. Was frustrated enough to consider doing an SST session, started that and chatted to a bunch of other people who'd also had the same issue.

Actually jumped back into the 19:45 TTT and rode it solo. It was brutal but felt like I was 'involved' in the suffering with the team on Discord, just 25 minutes behind them! Big effort up the Volcano and nearly pulled up on the descent. Kept going but more of a tempo on the flats, then just before the KOM I pulled up to stop. One of my teammates had been watching me and gave me suitable amount of abuse on Discord so I continued and pushed onto the finish. Last 5km where pretty grim.

https://www.strava.com/activities/4969522381

Trainer did some weird bumps of resistance for no reason after the Volcano, played with my head unit (which then was controlling it and made it worse!), actually did a spin-down mid-race (didn't lose Zwift connection - weird!) and carried on riding. Seemed to solve it! Brutal route to ride solo... @SoliD you're saying rides like that and the 4x up Box hill don't do anything to improve my performance? Dread to think where I'd be without them! ;)

Yeah, I get that. Personally I find a 40 to 50 minute plan with various changes in watts and cadence every 2 to 4 minutes passes the time quite quickly, as you're counting down to the next interval rather than the end of the session.

I then throw a race in every one or two weeks as I'm very competitive and also I can (hopefully) see what my gains produce! :)

Glad to hear not just me Roady. I wonder if they can patch it their side or need to push a client update onto us again.

Lucky for me I’d done my warmup, my race (DSQ for no HRM) and was 30 mins into the cool down!

Hey

Any thoughts on a Tacx Neo 2 Smart. For a mountain bike. I need to rehabilitate a knee injury. I'm over weight and 46ys old. I'm also on call 24/7 at the moment (and shielding) so leaving the house just isn't an option.
I need to get my fitness back for hitting the trails again when the new normal reopens . It may be overkill but I'd rather have functions I "may" use rather than not have something I want in the future.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Have really enjoyed using mine over the last 18 months. From barely going on the turbo pre tacx neo even in the worst weather to most sessions between November and Feb up to about 2.5 to 3 hours. Nothing beats going outside but it's been a fantastic tool.

Chain for the bike? I'd have thought there's enough resistance from a high gear to engage it if not max erg mode resistance? :D

I'd just use quick link pliers though if you've got them.

Just use the pliers or remove the bike and put a back wheel on?

My Zwift still crashing. Ran through the error log steps, seems to point at nvidia display driver which is <1 month old :rolleyes

I might try DDU which is a hard driver remover and then reinstall a fresh set AGAIN! Not sure if I am better using older drivers or the latest ones on a GTX 970

Took bike off in end. Easiest way. Forget how much a fresh chain improves things.

I'm just too competitive I think, at the moment 99% of my Zwift riding is racing. As I'm not really commuting outside of the nursery run then 75% of my 'riding' is actually just racing on Zwift. :o

Glad to hear not just me Roady. I wonder if they can patch it their side or need to push a client update onto us again.
Mine seems to have been isolated to that one time. Logged on for TTT again last night with another darn update showing (since riding Tuesday) so did a restart after I'd loaded just to be sure... Zero problems!

https://www.strava.com/activities/5010181271

Had a good one, had to skip an early turn in rotation due to knowing Box was coming up. Rode it hard and then easy descent as we lost our lightest rider (Sarah) off the back, so nice recovery and tempo to the escalators while she got back on (with some help). They caught me just there which was perfect as I'd said about pressing on so I didn't get dropped on them. So good run into the finish then, mostly being towed by our A (Tom) but I did start a long leadout at 1.2km to go. Felt good, some awesome banter and fun with the usual suspects. But damn my legs ache today! DOMS I picked up last sunday, kinda shook off on tuesdays ride, then got back with nursery rides, shook off again in the TTT, but now my calves are tight as anything...

I've been working my way through these stretches this week and really seem to be helping, but just wonder if some of the aches now in other places are from them too...

https://www.trainerroad.com/blog/5-stretches-every-cyclist-know/

I find the upper part of my calves tend to 'cramp' when tired sitting, fine on the bike. This week my DOMS in my upper rear part of my quads/hamstrings where the worst I've had for a while, just from pushing myself a little too hard when riding outside. Not that used to a more aero position I guess and riding bit hard seated on some ramps when I should've stood.

Get one! You'll love it and a sound investment. Just be conscious about possibly needing a thru axle conversion kit for it for that frame as they're generally designed around road thru axles (135mm & 142mm). But also likely need a cassette (I think?), you'll find it very low geared with a MTB but several things you can do to combat that, worth doing some research/googling/forum browsing but you'll probably better buying as 'fast' a cassette as possible to go on there (small number of teeth) to combat the likely small chainrings you have. You may struggle if thinking about fitting a wide range MTB cassette you already have on there.

Weird, mine has been ok apart from that sudden close a week ago. Fingers crossed!

I'm on quite an old driver for the Geforce I have and never bothered updating it as been stable. Equally it's an old 740M so possibly not compatible with latest...

Ordered one yesterday from Leisurelakes. A lad from the shop dropped it off this afternoon... I really wasn't expecting it so soon. (i've just had a 8ton skip delivered for this weekend) Can't knock that service... I'll try it with the spare cassette I have and then if like you say it may not do (its 27 speed) Then I'll be back for recommendations.

Ordered an elite sterzo too. Need to clean the mud off my MTB so I dont spray dried crap all over the TV room...lol.
Suppose I need to side load the training app on amazon fire TV so I can connect to the big TV.

Cheers...

Well Roady, removed and installed latest drivers.... see how we go.

Some Googling suggests that windows TDR can cause crashing also.... ho hum.

The dual recording for that one is actually pretty good - if you use the part I rode the TTT less than 5-8W most of the time. Warm up on just Flux in there swinging the power comparisons as it warmed up - and then it drifted quite a bit on the cooldown too which I don't quite understand why...

I attempted twice to get it to do a spin down during my wait and the app wouldn't find and pair with it some reason.

That is pretty awesome service!

That's rather what drives me to train properly though. If you were competitive, wouldn't you want to be getting quicker :)
Yes... Lol. Stop making me look a bit silly!

To be fair, did the 'Grin and Bear' it workout that @UTmaniac suggested and it was brutal... But a really good one and although it hurt it didn't bore me. Note to self: must switch trainer to power source when doing workouts - you get a horrible additional delay making changes in power absolutely terrible, it was barely able to stabilise over the 30s block. The 5 minutes at Z5 tested me far more than the 30s blocks.
https://www.strava.com/activities/5020917839
I really found my cadence high for this, the session constantly telling me to spin slower as the 'rests' should've been at 85 rpm and the intervals at 95. I was generally at 90 for the rests and 105 for the intervals. Just found that easier?!

Sunday started an endurance ride, around 36 mins in (so 6 minutes after late join was over! Typical!) Laptop promptly lost it's WiFi connection and took some fiddling to get it back. Think it's on it's last legs as not the first time it's done it... Did a quick blast on 'Emilys short mix' but had to bail as legs really said no after the riding before and short on time (I also did a quick jolly on RGT to test things between these).

Tour of Watopia started yesterday, anyone doing it? Thinking I might as gives me a bit more flexibility around ride times and days. Although I'll continue with the Thursday TTT, it's the other earlier ride in the week at the moment I'm struggling to fit in. Most race/series seem to be Tuesday so that's what I've done so far, but the Monday suits me better. Does seem to be lots of interest around the TFC 'Mad-Mondays' rides but have yet to get myself in one.

@Roady - was Flux paired to Zwift when you tried to use the app to find it for a spin down? Sometimes problematic when a trainer is paired to another source. Just use the spin down in the zwift sources menu. It's perfectly fine, no need to use the manufacturer specific app for spin down on trainers if you are already in the game and warmed the trainer up.

ToW - done stage 1 today. Just an easy hour for me today, see it was stupidly short so just done it. The new game mechanics in these events with mega numbers is horrendous.
