The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

Maybe it's worth contacting support? Or, is there a companion app? With the Kickr bike, I can set wheel size and things like that, which I guess would change the 'speed' it thought I was going.

There is a companion app, but it's really limited and doesn't integrate with any other platforms (that i can see). The speed i can slightly understand as there's no weight input, so it's easy to imagine it taking 200w and applying that against someone 60% of my weight!

Should only be a few days until the Kickr Bike gets delivered so not going to spend too much time messing with it.

I just want to be able to give people a ride on when I have the zwift app on my iPad. Being British I feel very rude ignoring people who give me one.

Haha that's never bothered me. I'm equally miserable on Strava and only really give Kudos if someone has gone above and beyond their norm, rather than just liking everything. My yearly stats is always amusing as it's around 10 kudos given and 1500 kudos received!

Oh yeah, but what i mean is that my Garmin literally maxes out at 10.8kph. I could do 120w and it'd record that, and then i could record 600w and it'd never budge above 10.8kph. The same thing happens with both my Edge and Epix watch, so it's definitely something weird being sent out from the Decathlon bike.

The bike was a "Second Life" purchase direct from Decathlon and so i wonder if it's part of the reason for the original return.
No that sounds correct to me, Garmin doesn't use power to calculate speed it uses rpm and circumference.

I can set 100w and speed only changes if I change gear or pedal faster or slower.

If your saying speed doesn't change with rpm then yes sounds like an issue.

Have you managed to successfully add the bike's power/cadence as a sensor to your garmin? That's what I do with my SB20, and my Epix can then display the live watts during an activity. The Garmin estimate of speed / distance differs a bit from Zwift's figures, and I guess the main reason is that the Epix doesn't know about gradient.
If it is paired, then the only thing I can think of is that it's also sending duff speed/cadence data and Garmin is using this somehow instead of estimating speed based upon Watts.
This might be relevant: https://www.reddit.com/r/Garmin/comments/1cb0fe8/new_smart_bike_cadence_way_too_low/ - I didn't spot any solution in there though.
It might be worth trying BT instead of ANT+ (or vice versa), and maybe deleting the 'trainer' sensor and seeing if you can add it as a power meter sensor instead?
Or just wait until your new Kickr turns up :)

Used the Decathlon bike yesterday whilst watching the United game - Double punishment!. There definitely feels like something is wrong in both speed and power readings. The lack of ability to input weight is probably a factor on speed as it regularly says i'm doing 37kph whilst just easily spinning at 150w. Then it doesn't export the cadence to my Garmin and so that reads speeds of 11.7kph pretty much consistently. As such i end up with stupid workout recordings like this (although it is showing cadence which is likely to be accurate. It just doesn't display on my Garmin device during the activity)

It's a shame Wahoo charge so much for delivery really. I would've gone with one of their Reconditioned ones at €2000 but with €150 for delivery, it's not far off the bike new at some third part retailers at €2300.
Sounds like a bike issue, or the speed it's calculating from flywheel, as the flywheel isn't spinning any 'faster' you're not seeing any increase in your speed, even though the resistance is increasing. Either faulty or just the issue with that kind of 'smart' (but not really smart) spin bike. It's just not designed around Zwifting/power based training. Just designed as an electronic home version of a spin bike.

Yeah for that price difference pointless going for reconditioned... But equally zero issue with Wahoo reconditioned devices. They're one of the best and have the best support for a reason! Also why you'll see them selling so many reconditioned units - they happily swap them out for people, fix them and then sell them as reconditioned. Not many other brands even do repairs. Hear of even some smartbikes being replaced but only after an 'on site destruction' has taken place. As the cost of shipping them around and repairing just isn't worth it. Crazy.

Scratch all that umming and arring. I've ordered the Kickr Bike!

@Roady you can be happy now!
You've made a good choice, pretty sure you'll find it night and day compared to the Decathlon bike! ;)

Hope it turns up quickly for you - I'd be interested to hear what you think of it.
My SB20 has been pretty rock solid since I got in in 2020, but over the last few weeks I've had a couple of problems connecting to the crank power meters, and with Stages going out of business I doubt it would be economic to fix even if spares were still available. So I want to be ready to pull the trigger at short notice, and the Kickr bike or shift are currently top of the list.
A friend who has an SB20 in Portugal recently got a replacement (new) crank arm for one of hers which wouldn't stay calibrated. So you can certainly still get them!

Garmin never estimates speed from watts. Only rpm and wheel size/circumference, or speed.

Good to know - Saddleback do (did) the UK support and would be the first place to call.
Fortunately the problem seems to have gone away - my suspicion is that it might be something to do with how many concurrent bluetooth connections there were, and whether the bike itself, the phone (zero offset) and the watch were preventing Zwift on the laptop connecting.

Power isn't much use without other data like distance covered, wind, elevation. You could be putting in 500w and going nowhere with a strong enough wind or steep enough hill.
With power and weight you could estimate speed/distance on level ground (a simplified version of what Zwift does). But it's a bit academic if Garmin doesn't do it this way :)

Top tip (that I only learned a month ago). If you are in a group ride or you stay with someone indoors or out long enough and strava thinks you rode with them, press manage group and give your iPhone a shake. There’s a pop up that allows you to give everyone in the group kudos with a single button press allowing you to be polite and lazy both exactly at the same time :)

Strava is so dumb. Why is this a thing like that.

Just makes it a bit easier to give kudos to those you arent following. I think its a decent feature tbh
No it is, but why is it hidden like that.

Also I find it so odd that their phone app lets you say pick a public route created by someone but if you’re on the website you’re not able to Search or browse any routes created by others.

It’s like two different companies work on it lol.
