I got the update to work fine but now all my apps are gone. They have also disappeared from itunes too.

Yeah same happened to me on updating the iPad and iPhone. All contacts and mail settings o.k., just no apps. Not sure about music as had none on either.
Not too bothered t.b.h. as 90% I wasn't using and can start afresh now by scouring the (Why didn't we always have it?) purchased history.

all my pictures and apps went but the apps came back when i synced with itunes and then after about an hour the pics appeared from nowhere on my phone

Can you send picture messages over iMessage for free? does it use apples network rather than the mobile providers?

Yes you can send pictures/videos via iMessage, it uses whatever data connection you have, be it wi-fi, 3G or GPRS etc.

Mainly to incorporate iPods and iPads one would assume.

In this country we do, many others are not so lucky. From speaking to friends in the states and across europe, us brits are a bit unusual in our high use of text & MMS. In many other parts of the world e-mail is the preffered medium for many people.

My apps won't sync from itunes, on the apps tab i have the sync apps checked but if i tick the ones i want the sync button changes to revert/apply so i hit apply. It then goes through the syncing motions but the apps dont move to my phone and they become unchecked. I can download apps fine from my phone.

Sorted, it's just asked me to re authorise my phone, why couldn't it have asked me that 3 hours ago?

I get crappy reception in my house, this will mean i can easily send to other iphone users over my wifi

imessage is on my default.

icloud was not a problem last night. I suggest trying later on at around 11pm
