The Last of Us (HBO, from Creator of Chernobyl) - No game spoilers please

Seen this and it made me laugh

The Last of Us episode 3 (2023) features a scene where Bill stands in the open without taking cover and misses all his shots. This is a reference to Bill's AI in the game.

Thought it was pretty decent episode although reminded me a bit too much of walking dead at times which is not a good thing. Think I’m just sick of the “people living normally in a gated community” thing that the WD rinsed to death.

Knew when I was watching the episode that a bunch of gamers and weirdo right wingers would get triggered by the man love, didn’t expect Shocky FM to cancel himself over it though lol

We don't actually know that Bill is dead do we. We haven't seen a body or anything, which was a bit annoying if I'm totally honest

We didn't see Tess' body either; it's pretty obvious neither of them are going to suddenly appear in a later episode.

With Tess fairly obvious she ain't coming back, Bill does leave more ambiguity and would kind of fit the nature of the man that if Frank died he'd go "off grid" to deal with it - though I don't think they've purposefully left that slightly open - far more likely both were dead.

Maybe taints my views of it a bit but I found the middle of the episode far too much of what was pulling TWD down and eventually lead me to stop watching it so I find the positive views a bit surprising - though I did think the start and what the end setup good, but the meat of the episode was far too much dragged out over embellishing a point, to the extent I have to question whether they for some reason were compelled to give one of or the actors a certain minimum amount of screen time, while the good stuff was relatively rushed.

Narh, Bill is gone.

He left a note, otherwise he would have come out and said Hi. Where else would he have gone without his truck? On Foot.

All the pot plants are dead outside, the dishes weren’t washed, Bill’s gone.

We didn’t need to see the body because in the note he said he left the window open, and the end shot of the window and pulling back letting your know it‘s the bedroom* suggests to the viewer that is the room.

*although that room is on the 1st floor, and when he pushed the wheelchair after dinner he went straight past the stairs and not gone upstairs.

It would be consistent with someone of that kind of nature though to go "off grid" to deal with their grief, not want to be around people (even if just Joel and Tess), just hike off somewhere maybe even setup anew elsewhere (the thought process and so on involved in that can be cathartic). Playing against that though he was obviously getting on a bit and less likely to have the energy for it.

I don't think not showing the body is the same as being ambiguous though. If they wanted him alive they'd have just...kept him alive, not had him lie about drinking the suicide wine to the man he loved, then climb out the window and run away without any of his stuff.

I'd have liked to have seen the TV show's interpretation of the interactions between Joel, Ellie and Bill, but I think what they came up with made for much better TV than them running around a school looking for a battery.

I think with most of the changes from the games so far - they've taken the spirit of or fundamental element from that part of the games and done them better for TV.

I enjoyed the latest episode and think the producers should be applauded for having the confidence to pretty much park the main story and cover what they did.

Yes - a bit to much man kissing for my liking but it was a well made and well acted piece of TV.

I thought it was an exceptional episode. I mean the man on man action isn't my cup of tea but it was brilliant and just a story of two people who meant a lot to each other and I think we can all relate to that.

Plus one of my favourite ever TV characters is Omar... so there is that

It does feed the main character arch of Joel aswell in that

It gives him purpose again, or atleast opens his eyes a bit. that love can still prevail in that setting I guess?

Edit: P.S If I need to spend next Tuesday editing as many posts as I've done today, I'll start thread banning.

Are we spoliering everything here that has aired, just because there may be game spoilers? I'm confused, as the sticky with the rules states spoiler tag isn't required for TV shows that have aired in the UK. I might be missing something obvious :D

I think it means don't use stuff from the game as possible spoilers for the TV show - for those who've not played the games EDIT: or maybe the other way around I dunno LOL.

Unfortunately not easy to edit my posts above without sticking the whole thing in spoiler tags including the bits I've quoted.

It maybe worth adding something into the thread title "No Game Spoilers" etc as unspoilered chat about the TV show after its aired is allowed under the current spoiler rules.

We’ll let’s use some common sense. The aired episodes are being spoiled within 24 hours of wherever.

Game spoilers are also being discussed in the context of said episodes.

Game spoilers are being inferred to guess where the show is going.

I’m asking people to be mindful to those who are 100% blind to the show, game and lore.

Obviously once an episode has been out for a week then spoilers are not needed, again common sense should prevail guys…

Edit: I’m going to have a chat with the admins over the 24 hour rule, due to some RTMs that came up to spark this

One of the few bits of The Wire which didn't send me to sleep personally - I still don't get what people see in that show, Omar was by far the highlight of it.

It's my favourite TV show easily #1 but depending on the day that can swap with The Sopranos. I do see how people can find it a bit slow.

But it seems HBO rarely misses with TV. They certainly know what they're doing!

It’s pretty clean from the rules. Consider book spoilers interchangeable with game spoilers.

TV Shows
  1. Spoiler tags are NOT REQUIRED when discussing shows that have aired in the UK already, INCLUDING early morning i.e. 2AM showings on Sunday nights/Monday mornings.
  2. Spoiler tags whilst discussing book spoilers, casting spoilers and anything other than events that have occurred in an episode that has aired in the UK are STILL REQUIRED. You should also indicate the nature of the spoiler (e.g. book spoiler, casting spoiler, etc).
