So today is supposed to be big patch day...

Should point out that I have been trying to play the New Game+ I started but ever since hotfix 1017, the game just crashes randomly no matter what settings I use now it seems.

Always been 24/48 as the bulk of my media consumption is at 48KHz, most games also employ 48KHz audio so makes sense to use that sampling rate and avoid potential conversion artefacts

Nvidia never post up hotfix drivers on GFE, it's always a manual download because hotfix drivers are beta and GFE is only for WHQL game ready and studio drivers.

Well the good news is that this big patch has meant some noticeable improvements over the previous hotfix.

1: The game loads quicker now, the launch game loaded a save in 43 seconds, the last hotfix increased save loads to over 1 minute, now the load time has gone back down to 43 seconds.

2: The shader compilation was weird, first load after this big patch and nvidia hotfix driver re-install the main screen showed 98% compiled within 20 seconds and I thought it was done. Loaded the game and played all fine, circa 100fps. running nicely and CPU usage was not high as if shader comp was happening in the background. Just loaded it up now and it's looking like it's resuming compilation and started at 25%, I walked away to use the loo, came back within 5 mins and the compilation was done, so looks like this has been massively improved although I can't say exactly how long it took but must have been ~10 minutes - Weird but fine.

3: I also installed the hotfix Nvidia driver as mentioned above to see if the performance degrade seen in the pre-patch version of the game was sorted. It largely is. In the menus it seems to drop the fps to a bit over 60 it seems but when you go back into the game it's ~100. It's still lower than the non hotfix driver, but not by the 20 odd fps I was seeing before. Also no more crash with this patch + driver combo.

4: Mouse camera judder remains, we will be waiting a while for that I can feel it......

At least everything appears stable now, just that mouse jitter before I put a New game+ session on Survivor mode into play.

So started a New Game+ again but this time on Grounded+ with the new patch and NV driver, have to say it's running superbly, no major frame drops in certain areas, it does still drop in some places but it's not noticeable at all with Vsync, just annoying about the camera panning judder with the mouse which is more obvious now because the frame pacing has been improved in this latest patch as well as CPU usage.

Here's what mine's running like:

I'm happy enough to continue this run on Grounded+

Also, this was a bit amusing, the focus on fine details to make the experience more realistic, yet they forgot to code in the motion light in the bathroom when you're left to the wall

If I wasnt aware of the vram issues, crashing before the hotfix and high CPU requirements, I'd say this was a great port. lol
Basically this, anyone jumping into the game now will of course have to manually install the nvidia hotfix driver until the next WHQL releases, but otherwise it's a great performer, and looked great anyway.

12GB 3080? if so then no need. I have a 3080 Ti and it's perfect on that, it's 60fps+ without DLSS or ~90fps+ using DLSS Quality.

Out of curiously I also tried DLDSR just now (this game does not have a full screen option so what you have to do is enable 2.25x DSR, then change the desktop resolution so the game then uses that resolution, for me that is 5160x2160, and got the following performance:

DLDSR 5160x2160 @ DLSS Quality (3440x1440):
Average framerate : 41.5 FPS
Minimum framerate : 37.1 FPS
Maximum framerate : 51.6 FPS
1% low framerate : 35.9 FPS
0.1% low framerate : 12.2 FPS
^Because of the 12GB VRAM, the game resorted to paging to system RAM/Pagefile (I monitored 2.5% pagefile usage on a 4GB fixed pageifle)

Native 3440x1440 @ DLSS Quality (2296x960):
Average framerate : 82.2 FPS
Minimum framerate : 71.4 FPS
Maximum framerate : 99.1 FPS
1% low framerate : 62.1 FPS
0.1% low framerate : 29.6 FPS

DSR ingame settings:

If I had a 4090 for example, then I could leverage that extra power and play games like this in DSR 5160x2160, then have DLSS in use which gains the extra fps but internally renders the game at my screen's native 3440x1440 - You get better AA as a result, and better crispness due to the internal render resolution. A great option for those with the new 40 series or above cards and might find themselves in a CPU limited situation with certain games so need give the GPU some more work to do, DSR comes into good use for those, just the extra faff of having to change desktop res to the DSR res if a given game does not have a fullscreen option and only Windowed Borderless like Last of Us.

I'm pretty sure everybody gets the mouse jitter, just like in Uncharted, some people just don't notice it, but it's 100% there. ND state that it's depending on hardware configuration, so different setups will accentuate the issue more than others. The higher your FPS is in-game the more obvious the issue is, and if you have a VRR display, then even moreso.

I have personally tried all the suppsoed "fixes" for it, 60fps lock in NVCPL, 60fps lock in game, 60fps lock in RTSS< 60Hz in display settings, turning off VRR, using a lower res, using a higher res etc etc. These are not fixes, these are grounds for placebo :p

Is that 16.7GB of the game alone though? I suspect yes due to how much RAM this game uses, and as such your total system RAM usage inc OS will hit your 32GB, and because of that, you will be paging to disk as you've run out of RAM.

See my screenshot above, the total RAM use is 29GB and I have 64GB hence why the pagefile is barely touched!

Hmm just did some testing between FSR and DLSS vs native and they have defo changed something in the last patch on how upscalers work, at launch I posted comparisons showing that DLSS and FSR both looked great and a little sharper detail on ground textures were visible, more detail when pixel peeping.

now though this still is the case but FSR is noticeably sharper than DLSS, I know AMD sponsored this game so I suspect that AMD saw that they didn't have an edge over DLSS so have boosted sharpness detail in the latest patch of the game.

I do notice more noise in the FSR output though on walls with reflections of water for example when moving the camera around, and now native has some weird white speckled glitching when you move Joel's head around in front of walls with water reflections off them. This is issue is only observed at native res, it is not an issue when using DLSS or FSR.

It is a RAM hog, total system RAM usage can exceed 28GB (my video earlier shows 28GB total used for example) - The more you have the more it will use when needed, else you will see paging to disk.

Last Of Us just installed an update, specific for mouse stutter..

B4HkvRU.jpg

Will give it a go and see how it does :)

Now you have to wonder wtf is taking them so long to do the same about Uncharted and camera stutter!

Edit*

Just tried it out and OMG, it is SO smooth, it's essentially night and day difference. How on earth nobody at ND caught this before launch is a complete mystery. The game is essentially now near perfect, shader comp still takes about 20 mins or less, and load times are still over 20 seconds, but hey ho. Everything else appears to be 10/10.

Was just playing a quick session earlier on Grounded+ and got a crash to desktop! So it does seem the nvidia hotfix driver has not actually solved the issue :/

Tell you what though, Grounded+ is very hard lol, dying a lot, but each re-run of the same bit trying different tactics which is quite fun. The super limited ammo and drops from enemies is also a challenge, you are given the bare minimum and every shot has to count, or you shoot multiple enemies with one round if they stand in front of each other!
