The Left Handed Build

Why "Left Handed"? :D Having looked through your STY build I'm looking forward to this one.

As promised, here is an explanation on what I am attempting to do.

Even though I was very happy with ‘The STY’ I thought that I could have a better water cooled system. I started looking around and decided that the only way to have a set up that I wanted was to do a scratch build. Shortly after this initial brainwave, I had a conversation with Tom @ Chilled on the possibilities of producing such a case. We both felt that if I could produce a frame for this new build then Tom would CNC the required panels.

So after this initial conversation I went away and started to do a few basic sketches of my new design. I then returned back to Tom where I was ridiculed about being ‘old school’ and using pen and paper and not sketch up. Again after this conversation, we both felt that this project could be manufactured and I went away to start the construction on the frame.

I thought about producing the frame from aluminium but the problem of creating a good looking corner arose. I then decided to use 20mm steel angle iron to build the frame as I could produce a frame with welded corners.

So that's the start of the story. Photos & why "The Left Handed Build" later today - just worked nights so of to bed now. Also builds tension for later.

looking forward to 5970 benches, I started out o/c ing mine but performance was worse than stock

also bought the ek block for the mobo but havent fitted it yet cos it works perfect without it !

When I first started overclocking this motherboard the temperatures were quite high. I fitted the extra fan for the center cooler but that was a terrible noise.
Then fitted the water block & I have not looked back.
As for the 5970, I have not run any benches on it as such but will give it a go if you want.

As promised, here is an explanation why it is called ‘The Left Handed Build’

So the case build begins.

So I purchased a few lengths of angle iron.

21.jpg

These were then cut to the required length

22.jpg

The chop saw was then set to 45deg

23.jpg

And the ends cut to 45deg to build a good corner.

24.jpg

All the pieces were cut to the correct size & with 45deg ends

25.jpg

These pieces were then cleaned up with a grinder

26.jpg

The frame was then setup on a flat surface with magnetic corners.

27.jpg

Then the 'tools' were broken out

28.jpg

One side completed, now only four to do (or should it be 5, I think this is going to be a funny shape!!!) :(

29.jpg

The center pieces were then 'notched out'

30.jpg

Then set into places and welded

31.jpg

All of the frame was then 'tacked' together and all joints fully welded.

As for calling this the ‘left handed build’, this came from a conversation with Tom @ Chilled when we were discussing how the side panels should look. During the conversation we decided that we had a blank canvas to work with and we could build a design that flowed through each section of the case.

We both agreed that this was an excellent idea but were unsure of what type of design to use. I then explained to Tom that he had to be artistic to do his line of work and that he must have a good design in his head somewhere. He then laughed and said ‘you have to be left handed to do this sort of thing, don’t you’ and you would be better off looking for someone who has a degree in art rather than computers.

This now means that I do not have a finalised design for the cut outs for the fans and the window for my scratch build, yet!!!!.
Hopefully someone will read this and come up with an outstanding design !!!

A few more pictures before I go to bed as I worked nights again last night.

The frame is now completed and fully welded.

Could just be in jest? Although if it was I'd expect the addition of a tongueface just after the pic.

This build is gonna get interesting. :)

Looks like I have completely missed the point with Eames post & the picture of the dog.
Can someone please be kind enough to explain it to me. Thanks

^ anyone care to explain why this isnt totally uncalled for?

the frame looks good piggin, would be interesting to see your concept sketches :)

Thanks rjkoneill.

As for drawings, I am not left handed. :D
The design was more like a drawing on a back of a fag packet.
There has not really been a design process more of take a few measurements and design a case that everything will fit into.
I know this all sounds very kayotic but its hard to put into words whats in your head.
I have always been a man of action & the design evolves as the build progresses.
When I started this build I showed Tom @ Chilled the drawings but he did not fully understand where I was coming from as there was no real explanation.
Now he understands as he has a fully functioning 3D model for us to work with.

Thanks rjkoneill
I still do not understand the significance of the picture of the dog. Can you please explain it to me. Thanks

Thanks FabienO for explaining.

Looks like the OcUk faithful are a tough crowed to keep happy.

Any way, I explained a long time ago that I was doing this for my enjoyment and that has not changed. The build will continue & I will still post.
So for those who are enjoying the build, then please read on & those who find it tedious then good luck to you.

Nah, he's just one guy trolling. You're doing a smashing job. Haters gon' hate :P I don't know much about building (aside from plug it where it fits) or watercooling, especially from scratch. Always enjoy a good project log though :D

Saying thanks to you FabienO is becoming habit forming.

As for building from scratch, this is my first one, so I am also interested to see how it turns out. lol

Also happy to know that you are enjoying the log. :)

Looking good, is this going to be a mountain mods ufo style case then ?

I wish i had the ability (and tools) to fabricate my own case ! Looking forward to seeing more (i like pics :D).

This build is going to be very much like a mountain Mods case (more like a wider pinnacle 24).
When building The STY, I found I could have done with a little more width to achieve my ideal water cooling set-up.

When looking at cases, I thought of something similar to this

http://www.mountainmods.com/extended-ascension-cyo-p-493.html

but the layout will be very specific to my requirements.
(will post more photos tomorrow to give a better idea of what I am talking about)

As for the tools, the work you see in fabricating the frame was completed in my work place & the ability, well we will have to see if that holds out to the end.

As for pictures, I like pictures also. So will carry-on snapping. :D

I actually thought it was a good story and the pic summed up my feelings, it was meant with utter sincerity.

Good luck with your build OP.

Thanks Eames - hope you have enjoyed & continue to enjoy my updates.
No hard feelings.

Looking very nice there. Just trying to decide how many of my fingers i'd happily chop off just to be able to weld and fabricate. Seriousy, it's got to be worth both pinkies!!!

Trust me its not.

I also seem to have missed all the excitement re the trolling. But then your average troll gets off on the attention anyway so no great miss there.

No real excitement, just a misunderstanding. Anyway the OP is such a noob he did not even know what a troll was (that's the things that lived under the bridge in the stories of the billy goat gruff's isn't it) :D
lol. its all an education :D

Keep up the good work matey.

Will do, thanks

OP/piggin, where'd you get the welding skills? Seems a lot of the modders have their own mini factory in their garage.

The welding skills have been developed over the years (still not that great when you see a coded welder at work)

As for my garage, the pictures were taken at work (fully functioning power station)
So I don't have a mini factory but I do have access to a fully equipment workshop with 30 maintenance persons working there. (god I am lucky) :D
