The Liverpool Club Thread. **No Spoilers**

He reminds me of Coutinho, who also never sold me at Liverpool. If play wasn't going through Coutinho, he was out of the game (both offensively and defensively). Diaz obviously has a much better defensive workrate, but I don't think he offers enough in an attacking sense when play isn't run straight through him, and for a player reliant on getting the ball and being the main man, a goal or assist every game and a half isn't enough.

To be clear, I'm setting high standards - the point I made is that I'm not sold on him replacing Mane, which is something very few players are capable of doing. Diaz is an excellent footballer and I'm very glad we have him, but he's far from the automatic pick that Mane was and I don't think that I necessarily rank him ahead of Jota/Darwin/Gakpo in that role.
Re Coutinho, maybe in his early years he was a bit in and out but the last 2 and half years he was unreal. For somebody that was more a midfielder than a forward, his goal and assist rate was insanely good. What you could say regarding Coutinho is that he didn't really have a position in a Klopp side.

On Diaz, if you're basing this on Mane 2016 to 2020 then I agree. Mane was out of this world in that period and it would be hard for any forward to reach that level however 2021 onwards he was not nearly the same player, which is why he was getting left out fairly regularly for Jota and then Diaz when he arrived. Whether Diaz can reach Mane 2016-2020 level only time will tell but the early signs, for me at least, are really promising. I don't think you can make direct comparisons between the two as I think they're different players and I also think moving forwards we're going to play slightly differently to how we play now. I think moving forwards we're going to play a 4-2-3-1 or some sort of variation of that and that suits Diaz down to the ground. He is much more of a traditional winger than Mane (or Salah) was. Mane and Salah are very much out and out forwards who start from wide positions - they're game is about playing on the shoulder of the last defender and making runs in behind or diagonals into the box. Diaz still makes those forward runs but he plays a lot wider and carries the ball a lot more. I actually couldn't agree less with you on the point about how much influence he has on the game compared to Mane - I think he has far more influence on the game and I'm not saying that as a criticism of Mane, I think it's normal because of the role he plays is different. I'm sure I wrote this before but my one criticism of Diaz was that he doesn't score/assist more based on how much he was influencing games.

As above, I don't think you can make direct comparisons between the two as they're slightly different players and I think Diaz is going to end up playing more of a wide midfield role rather than a wide forward role moving forwards but in terms of their influence and importance to the team, I think Diaz is (or at least was before his injury) well on the way to reaching the sort of levels Mane reached. His defensive output was the best we've had from any wide attacker under Klopp, his position means he gets on the ball more often in deeper positions and still he wasn't far off reaching players like Mane's attacking output (Mane averaged a goal or assist every 128 minutes during his time at Liverpool to Diaz's 140).

When the stories come out the other month that he was close to signing a new deal it was a bit of a surprise - he's struggled to stay fit for much of the last couple of seasons and with Diaz, Nunez and Gakpo arriving in the past 12-18 months, it was difficult to see where he'd feature for us. We're well stocked in the forward line and with the likes of Doak and Gordon coming through, I don't think we'll feel his departure as much as we would have done a few years back.

He probably doesn't link with the other forwards as well as Bobby did (though is better in the penalty area) but Jota's pressing and defensive work is right up there with peak Bobby's.

I'm no expert but I can't see how this gets finished in time for the start of next season. Even though the club have confirmed that they're going to ask to play our first game away from home (meaning our first home game will be the weekend of the 19th August), we're still going to need to hold test events before the stadium is given a safety certificate which would mean the stadium being ready by early August. There still looks like a lot of work to fit into 8 weeks to me.

Yea, I saw the rumours of delays over the last week but they appear to have been shot down. I still don't think it will be fully ready by the Bournemouth game though. The stand might be open but I'd be amazed if all the hospitality areas etc will be ready by then.

We're supplying all the beverage dispense pythons/tubing/taps etc. Going from other builds, I'd not be surprised to see it up and ready for the first PL home match at all. The fan zone etc is structurally done, furnishing it is the easier bit as you can have multiple teams in fitting safety/lighting/hospitality solutions etc
I must look up the orders as it'd be interesting to see exactly what the total length of tubing is involved.
Be careful, you don't want to be that guy that got sacked for sharing a video on twitter of the build :p

As I suspected a few weeks back, the opening on the new Anfield Road stand has been delayed:

The whole upper tier will be closed for the Bournemouth game and then the plan is to gradually open up more and more of it over the next few home games, hoping it's fully ready by October.

Trent makes perfect sense to me. In 2-3 years when VVD either isn't around or not in the side every week, Trent will be 26/27 and at the perfect age to take on the role as captain. I'd also like to think the added responsibility will help him with his game too. The kid is a genius and is capable of doing things on the ball that most players couldn't dream of but at times he doesn't do the basics well enough, now he has to and I think he will.

There were a few stories yesterday afternoon but it's now seemingly confirmed that Buckingham Group have gone into administration, meaning their agreement with the club is cancelled and the club can now move ahead with appointing a new main contractor and resuming work. It's reported that although a decision on a new contractor hasn't been finalised yet, some of the sub-contractors who were working for Buckingham could return to site as early as today:

It's **** for those that have lost their jobs but hopefully with the club said to be wanting to use as many of Buckingham's sub-contractors as possible, these guys will still be getting paid for the work they've done.

Wait, owners can reduce debt? That is allowed?
Of course, that's what the Glazers done in 2012.

And what's happened at Liverpool has been misreported. FSG haven't sold their shares, the company that is used to own Liverpool will have issued new shares which would have been purchased by Dynasty Equity and the funds would have then been transfered to the club.

I wasn't going to comment on this as the first thing everybody mentioned (on here and twitter) was about transfer funds and it just made me want to cry. The club has spent circa £150m on infrastructure in the past few seasons and in this last summer (due to triggering two release clauses) had to come up with at least £95m in cash for transfers (which the club wouldn't have had) - the club has funded this with a big over draft as well as money it generates itself and this money will pay off that. That now frees the clubs future revenue to be spent on other things moving forwards (including transfers), rather than paying interest and debt repayments.

some goes to debt incurred by this summer's player purchases
Yep, as above we triggered the release clause of both Mac Allister and Szobozlai meaning the club would have had to pay £95m up front + whatever the initial installments on Endo & Gravenberch. Now obviously there would have been some money coming in from Fab, Hendo etc but it's very unlikely that we received more than 50% of those fees up front. With the continued work on the Annie Road end, the club wouldn't have had that sort of cash available from day to day activities meaning they would have had to further increase the use of their overdraft.

I was under the impression at least the Sob money was borrowed from one of those soccer finance companies and is being repaid with interest? Perhaps I’m wrong though, my ex wife would tell you this happened many times a day.
There's been nothing in the clubs accounts about this although the next set of accounts (last season) won't be out until around March. What you might be getting confused with is the sale of Coutinho - we agreed a payment deal with Barca but in the end decided to sell the debt meaning one of these finance companies paid us the full amount (less a bit of interest) and they collected the installments from Barca.

Unlike other clubs we typically don't borrow much money in relation to transfers, whether that's from banks or from other clubs - it's cheaper to pay as much of the fees in advance as possible and typically any short fall from what the club generates itself has been very short term use of the overdraft. Last season the club would have spent in excess of £50m towards the Anfield Road expansion, that coupled with the fact that we had to pay the entire fees for Mac Allister and Szobo up front meant we probably had to dip into the overdraft a bit more than normal.

He's been due to be released 'in the coming hours' for several days and when the claim first came out, I saw reports claiming the authorities took the news with a massive pinch of salt. There appear to be some sort of negotiations between the rebel group and police however who knows when it will be resolved.

Reports tonight that Matip's got a knee injury and is likely to be out for several months. Thankfully Quansah's not looked out of place when he's been called upon because I can see him being needed over the next few weeks.

We need to get someone in in January ideally. Arguably more pressing than a DM now, funnily enough. I still like Kilman, although apparently we looked at him in spring and decided not to go with him.
I'd like to see us bring somebody in and thought we should have in the summer too but I'd never bet against Klopp making do until the summer. It'll really depend on just how long Matip is out for, Robertson's possible return (as that will free up Gomez more) and who's available.

Tempting fate here but Quansah's emergence has meant we're not in a desperate situation right now and Klopp certainly has high hopes for him. I'm not sure Klopp realised it was being filmed nor wanted it to go public but Vinny O'Connor (a Sky reporter) put a video on twitter of him being reunited with Klopp after starting covering Liverpool for Sky again - Klopp basically gives him a bearhug and puts him in a headlock before eulogising over Quansah, referring to him as VVD 2.0.

Klopp's confirmed that Matip's done his ACL. That's almost certainly his Liverpool career over. A very sad but probably fitting way for him to bow out. Because of VVD he's probably never got the recognition his performances have deserved because on the whole, he's been outstanding for us over the past 6 years. What always impressed me so much about him was he'd be out injured for x weeks and come back into the side and always just hit the ground running as if he'd been playing week in week out.

I don't think so, he is Virgil's mate and they have a good chemistry but the skill balance is heavily weighted to VVD. He wouldn't make it onto any of the other top four or five teams.
Is he as good as VVD? No but nobody has been. Would he have played in those other sides over the past 5-6 years? Absolutely he would have.

Like most of our squad he was miles off it last season but on the whole over his time with us he's been a fantastic player and the only downside has been his injuries.

Trent out for 3 weeks. We're now down to 3 senior defenders :/ Thankfully he's timed his injury well and is only likely to miss the first leg of the semi and Bournemouth game. Hopefully Kostas and Robertson both could be back by the end of the month and things start to ease up from there.
