I just wonder if it was a new manager bounce, even if it wasn't midseason, that gave a false sense of progress. Similar to when Ole took over and we went on that monster unbeaten run with some glorious results, like PSG away.

Always been good when the confidence is flowing same under Ole it when we pick up a bad run of games it all goes to pot.

It wouldn't surprise me if he had some kind of clause in his contract that says he has to be played a certain % of games as a starter.
I'd be shocked, we have no history of making deals like that.

I think it is simply that at the moment we're struggling for goals so ETH thinks his best chance of success is having the players that are mostly to score on the pitch. That is why McT is suddenly playing every game despite being utter crap.

:D

As harsh as it is, I've always said to my dad, that I'll know the club is on the up when McTominay has been sold/let go as we no longer need him. That sounds cruel as he's been a good servant over the years, but he's never been good enough for where we want to be, and the fact he keeps getting back in to the team is always a telling sign that our squad just isn't at the level it should be

Martial signed his contract on the 31st Jan 2019. His last goal before that contract was on the 22nd December, in fact he'd scored 2 goals in the 11 weeks that preceded him signing that contract. He also only scored another 2 goals in the 3 and half months to the end of the season after signing that contract. There's not a chance that he justified that new contract however somebody at Utd didn't want to be proven wrong after you spent so much on him so rather than cut your losses and sell him on the cheap or let his contract run down, he was given another big contract and you've been lumbered with him.

Think you’ll find that means the attack is firing.

My view on the problems, nothing new really:

  • The Glazers

This is the biggest issue and the root cause of the problems. No football structure, no investment in the stadium/facilities. Just a scattergun approach to buying players for various managers - spending the clubs self-generated revenue.

First job is to get this Ratcliffe deal sorted, and sort out the club hierarchy. Looks like it would be Jim Ratcliffe/Dave Brailsford/Joel Glazer, supported by an experienced football executive like Jean Claude Blanc who works for INEOS currently. Whether this will work remains to be seen, but it's our only hope at this point.

  • The Media/Fans - Pressure

I think this can be overlooked in these discussions. Everything at Man Utd is blown wildly out of proportion, players are dragged through the mud at every opportunity, and every word/action is heavily scrutinised. The pressure is on another level and makes things very difficult.

  • The Manager

ETH is still a relatively untested manager compared to the very best. He did well at Ajax historically but that's the limit of his experience. Last season was acceptable and quite good at times, but you can't suddenly fall off a cliff like this, even if there are injuries.

Tactically there are plenty of question marks - there's no observable style of play, and he may be losing the dressing room, at which point there's no hope for him...

He's also been allowed to sign most of the players he wanted - which is questionable in itself - the club shouldn't really allow it to that extent. We've spent around £400m on players in the past 2 seasons, most of them have failed.

  • The Players

Let's be completely honest - most of these players are not good enough to compete at the very highest level. Even if they were all fit and playing well, we're still well short of quality. They also seem to have a generally poor attitude.

TLDR - Sort out the club sale situation. Get the new directors in place. Sit down with ETH and assess what to do, and what he thinks is going wrong, and go from there...

I was mistaken, he actually signed it the season before he put in one of the best striker seasons we've had since Fergie left. That season he still managed 10 goals from left wing, a goal every 2 games. Half of that is under Mourinho, an incredibly defensive manager who hated him and tried to replace him with one of the worst transfers ever made.

The amount of revisionism on here is staggering. To pretend that you would have let one of our best attackers go on a free transfer.

Nah much better to pay him almost £80m over the life time of the contract than let him go for free. Then spend the entire time of that contract trying to sell him. Failing. Then partly cause of this contributing to FFP, not being able to replace him to resorting to having to pray that he does something when he comes on when chasing a game.

Pathetic.

This is the benefit of hindsight. Can you honestly say you wanted him gone at the time? Not sure what you mean about FFP, he will have very little impact on FFP because he was bought so long ago
