@Robbo I told you the Pogba transfer fee would be a bargain in the long run.

Prices are already doubled from his transfer in one season and you get to have one of the most talented players in the world for his prime years when he will be an absolute beast of a player.

He still needs to get better, but yes I think he'll definitely be a great buy. Just a shame we let him go to start with or it would have been even better, then again he developed well in Italy.

Now with Matic alongside him, he can get forward and express himself more, and he's great to watch.

If he performs better than he has and I wouldn't say peanuts. PSG aside, it's only Utd themselves (with Lukaku) that's paid a fee of that sort of level.

And why the **** has my last post ended up linking to Robbo's profile?

Hi guys. Not sure if I have posted in here before but I always read the thread anyway. Life long Utd fan by the way.

I do, however have a question...

When SAF was in charge we won everything and always had a team that grew together (Becks, Nevilles, Scoles etc) or players added on to strengthen a team that lost players throughout the summer transfers and retirement. I doubt we will see such an era like that again, it would be nice but with the vast amounts of money being thrown around I can't see us bringing a home grown (academy) team to the pitch for a very long time. Jose, do you think he will be long term? Will he, once/if he wins the Prem/Champions league, start to concentrate on the younger players that we have and do what SAF did? A few ropey seasons and then BOOM.. one of the best teams in the world at the time. Can we, as a club do that again and would JM help us out trying to accomplish that or will he leave once he gets some silverware?

I sincerely hope he stays. He had a reasonable season last year and our start so far has been nothing short of amazing, early days I know :P. I hope he has it in his heart to carry on what SAF did and remain with us for many years to come. I guess this depends on much he loves the club. He knows its one of the biggest in the world, I just hope he sees it as a long term investment to get the club and squad back to where it was a few years back.

your thoughts?

I doubt he will stay for us for a super long time because that simply doesn't happen these days. There are no clubs that are successful long term (5 years+) who keep the same manager. Player turnover is quite high now, expectations are inflated when you are spending hundreds of millions on players regardless of the fact that all the other top clubs are doing the same so you aren't really any better off than when everyone spent less.

The new model of football is basically to do one of two things. You can do what Chelsea have tried (and seemingly failed to do) and buy up half the young talent going and then loan them out and hope they come good. The other option is to buy the cream of young talent once they have matured to the point where they are good enough to go straight into the first team. Every club gets the odd youth product that can't be ignored but most of the time it will be smaller clubs who nurture this talent and sell it on to the bigger/richer teams. Monaco are a great example of this. They have managed to product a steady stream of the worlds best young players for a number of years now.

I think Mourinho will be around for a few more years unless something goes seriously wrong but who knows. Football is volatile these days.

What I will say is that Mourinho is showing already that he is happy to play younger players when the opportunity arises and they are good enough. We are never going to have a team full of academy graduates again but I still believe we are a country mile ahead of teams like City. Guardiola has spent hundreds of millions on players at City, hasn't given academy players a sniff and hasn't won anything yet.

Remember fez City have invested absolute mega bucks into their academy in the last few years, but these players wont really start coming through for another two or three years in any quantity.

They have certainly had the pick of the local area for the last year or two - and whether they are doing it by fair means or foul - they must have quite a talented bunch in the latter years of their academy by now

Thats what people were saying 2-3 years ago Frank. The truth is that City are one of the worst sides for promoting youth regardless of their massive spend on facilities etc. What happened to Iheanachio? He looked like a quality player yet they bought Jesus and suddenly he is sold.

Given the age groups we are talking about 2-3 years isn't going to make a difference (most of the articles /webcasts over the last 2 years or so were talking about school kids - which would still therefore still be in the academy even now)

"If you are good enough you are old enough" as the old saying goes - but that still only goes so far

Utd may well have the most ex-players in the EPL (or certainly near the top) , but its not like we have huge success in promoting proper home grown kids from the academy since the class of 92 and actually given them lots of game time

There are only a handful of players I can think of off the top of my head that had a long career at Utd between 92 and Rashford (Wes Brown, John OShea, Darren Fletcher, Jonnny Evans, Danny Welbad & Tom Cleverley)

yes there are dozens who have had a few games here and there and been sold on but I'm not sure you could really count them as a successful promotion either.

(and some even include the likes of Pique and Pogba in that list, but from what I remember they were bought in pretty late to the academy in the first place - and while Pique played quite a number of games for us I think its a little did-ingenious to describe either as academy products)

baring in mind that's the best part of 25 years, its ok but its nothing major to crow about either - we haven't produced a world beater just yet
