Well, if the orders are from above and Rooney is impacting the squad to the point of affecting results and damaging our prospects in the league he will be dropped. I just wonder what the repercussions of that will be.

What I meant was if Rooney was dropped because of his performances and the team improved then who cares about Rooney. We don't need him. Marketing need to find different ways to make money with the better players we have.

The problem is how long (if at all) the board are willing to gamble on Utd staying in the top 4 (or even top 3 to avoid CL quali matches in early summer) while still playing Rooney.

As Ive said before, while Pogba (and maybe a few other younger players) may well become the face of Utd in the - near - future, it still takes time to change everything and roll out those billboards / tv adverts / etc etc and for the time being at least that means Rooney.

Its also a case of Utd being such a cash cow at the moment, while the board care about being in the CL places, and playing those games from next season, unfortunately from a business point of view Im not sure they care enough about actually winning it - so keeping Rooney playing for another year (or more) may be more important to them for offfield reasons than what happens on it.

I don't think Rooney is that important from a marketing perspective.

The club has put martial forward for EA sports games. Pogba and Zlatan are world stars. Plenty of potential for marketing.

I agree. If marketing want he that much then put him on the bench (occasionally).

Maybe all those rumours that the contract Moyes gave him stated he got to play when he was fit were true! Fergie knew his number was up and gave Moyes the perfect way to get rid of him back then.

There is no way that there would be a clause like that in a 5 year contract. That would be a horrendously horrendously bad decision that someone above the manager would just say no to.

No one who was even slightly sane would have looked at Rooney and his performances at the time and said they want to have him on the pitch guaranteed for the next 5.5 years regardless of form.

I can't see there being a clause in his contract to allow this. I still reckon he will be dropped if he continues to play rubbish.

What gets me is that some pundits continue to praise him! They must be watching a different game.

I think the worm is starting to turn. The commentary on him this season so far hasn't been quite so fawning and you can hear the odd criticism or backhanded compliment. There are of course the same sycophants who think he walks on water but I think that we are seeing the start of his fall. I just hope it happens quickly and as painlessly as it can. If Rooney causes problems within the club as a result he will tarnish his legacy with the fans.

Maybe Mourinho will let Rooney get the club goals record and then start to phase him out? Hopefully this will be sooner rather than later!

With the money Rooney is on and the performances he's giving the club in return it is clear to me that the club/team is carrying Rooney and not the other way round.

I was thinking (hoping) that too. Once the record is broken there is no need to reason to keep playing him, we have plenty of better options.

For the first time in ages I'm feeling quite positive about the team, if the players start firing and playing with decent tactics we should hopefully end up in the top 4, at the very least. Fonte is a welcome addition, we're still weak at RB though. Glad to see Shaw back and well, he's effectively a new signing.

On paper we have a reasonable squad now, if/when Zlatan dips we have Rashford waiting. Depay will hopefully up his game and also perform better as part of a cohesive team. Looking forward to see Schneiderlin getting a run too. There is no reason why we shouldn't be a decent team, especially if we get another CB.
