Can someone spec me a shaving kit? Someone posted one in another thread but the link no longer worked/ was old out.

You're right, but I think that the website is being updated (traditionalshaving.co.uk) so they will be back there shortly. If you want to buy separate get:

1x brush (Any badger will be fine, depending on your budget)

1x Alum block or styptic pencil

1x Pot of Pro-raso shaving cream or Taylor's of Old Bond Street cream (any flavour you fancy)

1x Edwin Jagger DE89L or Murkur 34c razor (both similar, both great)

and a selection of blades.

You will be well on your way!

Cheers.
I ordered and received a blue beards revenge pack including badger brush, cream, post shave balm and a shavette.also ordered Merkur 34c and about 60 blades.

Had a shave with the shavette and managed not to rip my face off this morning.really nice feeling during and after shave. Pretty awesome. Will wait for blades and balm to arrive as i used the stock one that came with the 34c this morning.

Firstly.
I hate shaving.
No, I really detest it.

So fifteen years ago I started on the mission to stop shaving, first I put on a moustache, then it developed to a goatee and from there to a full face beard.

Every few weeks I'd simply mow my face with a beard trimmer, job done.

However, I've now gone back to a goatee.

I will shave once a week, on a Sunday evening and that's it. I'm not going to scrape my face on a daily basis, I hate it. I've no problem with developing the stubbly look during the week and then removing it at the weekend.

I always used to use the latest Gillette turbo multi-blade thing and whatever shaving foam/soap I could pick up. I think my current razor has 27 blades and more rubbery glide pieces than I care to count and I hate it.

So, OcUK - What do you suggest? I want a good clean shave on a Sunday evening and I want to be able to shape around the goatee easily. I'm not one for faffing about with moisturiser and all the other associated girly products that can be bought.

I'm knocking on a bit now so my face is pretty robust. I'm not spotty and I've not got sensitive skin.

Gun oil to lubricate my chins and a Leatherman to scrape the bristles off would be the obvious option but I tried that and although I smelt great for a couple of days, the shave wasn't as good as it could have been :)

Spec me a good clean once-a-week shave. Quick would also be a bonus!

Someone posted a decent setup above

I use a murkur 34c with derby blades. Gives a very good shave, the derby blades are not as sharp as feathers but after 3 passes it's fantastic.

Three passes? Three lathers and shaves?

Get out! :)

/edit - What's the alum block for?

The difference with shaving in the 'traditional' way is that it's more about beard reduction after each pass rather than just shaving the beard straight off. Three passes may sound like a lot, but this will be

- better for your skin
- a much closer shave than you can get with the Gillette
- cheaper (on a cost by blade basis)
- more relaxing / therapeutic (maybe, no guarantees!)

Give it a shot! :D

And yes, the Alum is for when (not if) you cut yourself. It also allows you to see where your technique is a bit duff as you will get a sting in the same place after each shave. It's good for improving dexterity!

P.S. This is not girly! http://www.trumpers.com/

Hmmm, OK. I'm willing to give it a try. What's the life of a blade? I appreciate that it's different for everyone but roughly, five shaves? Two shaves? Ten shaves?

It's also different for the blade. I can get 3-4 from an Astra blade, but for the cost I just use a new blade each time as it's not worth getting a poor shave for the sake of 10p.

Thanks,

I got this far but none of the suggested face scrapers are in stock at traditionalshaving.co.uk. Anywhere else to try or alternative suggestions?

The razor comes with Derby blades, I get a pack of Feather blades as a freebie and I prefer the longer handle on the DE89L. Looks good.

Feek i got all my stuff from shave shack too. spent about £50 and received about £5 worth of points and everything arrived next day even though it was only posted first class.

But i got my blades from here, cheap as chips and also arrived next day.I got the 60 blade pack should last me a while, hopefully six months or more or is that wishful thinking? ;)

Just decided to dive into this... Been using a Fusion for ages and this seems like a far cheaper long term option.

1 of: Merkur 34C Double Edge Razor (Safety razor)
1 of: Edwin Jagger Ivory-Coloured Plastic Handle Pure Badger Hair Shaving Brush
1 of: 100 Derby Extra Stainless Steel Double Edge Safety Razor Blades
1 of: Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream (150 g)
1 of: Osma Bloc - Alum Block

On its way to me now :)

Not sure why but for some reason I woke up half asleep in the night really itchy around my jaw, woke up the next day with scratch marks down both sides underneath my jaw like a cat had scratched the hell out of me. I don't own a cat nor have long nails either, all I recall is being somewhat very itchy

This was before I shaved of course, didn't grow it much either, just stubble.
