The Manly Shaving Thread

My bathroom is very small, we don't have a cabinet, just a window ledge. Besides, in idle moments or if I'm watching a film or similar, I find myself picking up the razor and dry 'shaving' myself from time to time. There's no blade in it, I'm just effectively practising getting the angle right of the razor against my boat and getting the hang of using no pressure.

I won't leave my shaving brush in the bathroom either, it's a damp environment and I like the brush to dry properly.

This is my razor, there are many like it but this one is mine....

:D

How on earth did you manage that?

Easy when you know how. :D

My Merkur has an adjustable head. You can turn it to change the angle of the blade for a closer shave. Settings are indicated by a ring of numbers from 1-6, where #6 is the most aggressive.

I usually shave with the blade set at #3 and return it to #1 when I've finished (for safety, ironically!) On this occasion I foolishly tried to adjust it with wet hands. Needless to say, I slipped and the blade sliced a huge semicircle across the top of my finger.

It's just as well I hadn't turned it to #6, or I might have lost a leg.

Head was screwed on tight and unscrewing without a towel!

Now there's a man who feels my pain. :)

I picked up a DE safety razor this week from shaveshack and very happy with the results. I was a bit concerned about slicing my face up but simply letting the weight of the razor do the work is the way to go. One with the grain and one against gives me a clean shave for about two days which is nice.

How many shaves do you guys get from a single blade?

3-4 shaves per blade. Could likely get more but they are so cheap that it isn't worth a bad shave to get an extra shave or two.

To the posters above that have hacked their fingers. I've only done that once and now never open the head without a towel. My cut was very clean and not that painful.

Mine was beautifully clean, but it was also surprisingly deep and it hurt like hell.

3-4 sounds good. What's the main difference between the different types of blades?

The razor I got has a little handle at the bottom that gives access to the blade without risking a cut.

That pic of the finger looks nasty.

It's not high on my list of 'things to do again as soon as I get the chance.'

Sorry, I didn't mean clean as in not dirty but as in straight. Your cut is all over the place from the picture.

Oops, my mistake.

It zig-zags a bit at the front, but neatens up as it runs around the back and side. Not that this was my primary concern at the time.

:o

Everytime i shave lately with my Merkur 34c no matter what blades i use i will always have irritation near my centre of my neck near my adam's apple(always this area) no matter if i am going gently too is there any way around this? should i apply thicker amount of cream? i use Old Taylor Bond Street too.

My brush arrived yesterday, it's awesome!

It's a custom Rod Neep (#1283) African Stone Chubby Handle, 26mm Extra Silvertip Knot with a 48mm Loft.

i had a test face lather with MWF which was very nice and quick. I then had a shave lastnight with Tabac, same results as the MWF. Very soft brush with great back bone, lather monster.

A couple of pics before i used it compared to my Duke 2.

And one after it's first use, along with my current favourite shave gear.

Could anyone who owns a Merkur tell me why they've purchased one?

Asking because i've got a DB89L myself and my mate purchased a Merkur (can't remember the model, it's was a short, stubby one) yesterday and the craftsmanship and finish just don't compare the the Edwin Jagger. The chrome looked slightly grey and discoloured and it didn't look like it was worth the £25 or so he spent on it.

a Merkur 34c HD was my first razor when i started DE shaving. I bought it as it was one of the recommended razors for a beginner and meant to be slightly more aggressive than the EJ89, so i would more than likely keep it rather than moving on.

Some people have merkur's with quality control issues. I have no issues with mine, its a nice razor.

It's currently my 3rd favourite razor. I rate the shave i get from my Weber Bulldog DLC and 1956 English Gillette HD Rocket above it.

Thicker cream works for me. Sometimes I put down a layer of sorbelene creme before applying my shaving cream.

Build quality (brushed aluminium; still looks fantastic after 4 years), adjustable head, double edged, retains heat, produces a better shave than any other razor I've ever used.
