Have a pot of bluebeards arriving at some point. Hopefully before 9am on Saturday. Thought I would give it a go. No huge loss if I don't like it. Sandalwood and Lemon and lime Taylors creams are next I think.

Bluebeards is the easiest cream ever to lather, it is pretty good stuff too. TOBS lemon & Lime is great although it smells like a KFC wipe......I like em.

My current fave cream is Trumpers Lime followed by Professor Blightys Spanish limes balm, it just lush.

I've nearly used up all my old shaving gels, foams from my previous Wilkinson Sword attrocity after nearly a year with a 34C so I picked up some Taylor of Old Bond Street Lemon and Lime from a barbershop in Nottingham.

What a difference!

I've got a bit left in my old shave gels but I can't not use the Taylor of Old Bond Street!! The only issue with it is it leaves the sink and my Merkur 34C in a white coating the next day if not properly rinsed through.

my Duke 2 arrived this morning, i cant wait to test it out :)

a couple of pics compared to my EJ Best Black Badger.

The EJ was the first brush i got with a starter kit in May. While it was ok for bowl lathering, i now prefer face lathering which it is terrible at due to being super floppy, take ages to get a decent lather.

I should have a custom Rod Neep brush on the way to me soon too.

EDIT: just made a test lather with the Duke 2, awesome face lather in seconds. I can confirm the EJ Black Badger Brush is terrible.

I have been given my Grandpas DE razor, Made in Britain and must be about 80 years old, will try to get a photo up later, must get some blades and give it a try...

Very nice, I have my eye on a Duke 3.

You wont be disappointed if it's anything like the duke 2, it's a very nice brush It's started to fan out a bit more now i've used it a couple of times

The brush i'm having made by Rod Neep should be very nice too. It's going to be a couple of weeks until his next batch of darker red stone arrives though.

That one will be a 26mm Extra Silvertip knot (52mm loft) with a handle similar to 969 (a short chubby).

He makes some very nice looking brushes!

This is what I'd go for:

Muhle R89 (http://connaughtshaving.com/mur89.html)
Nice razor, not too aggressive, not too mild. Looks great and the build quality is better than Merkur in my opinion.

Vulfix 660 brush (http://www.shaving-shack.com/progress-vulfix-660_pure-badger-shaving-brush.html)
Great little brush, what I started with and even though I have others now I still use it

Blade sample pack (http://connaughtshaving.com/popular.html)
Some great blades in this pack. I like the Astra SP and Gillette 7 o'clock. This is probably the biggest variable and it's important to find a blade that suits you. Sample packs are a great way of doing this.

Soap, there's loads to choose from. Proraso is great, and often highly recommended (http://connaughtshaving.com/prorasosoap.html)

I'd get an aftershave balm too, I use Nivea Replenishing balm, you can get this everywhere.

Watch some tutorial videos too.

This kind of set-up has improved my shave immensely. Hope this helps.

Is this still a solid choice?

Might go for a merkur 34c instead though?

Get a Progress Vulfix 660S from Diamond Edge. Otherwise the pure badger version is very decent (still use mine :p) Actually I'd take the Simpsons Special S1P, you get a better lathe turned handle. Edit: No I wouldn't! Face lathering is too painful!
(Vulfix own Simpsions btw, the 660S is essentially a Simpsons Best badger for £15!)

What a difference a brush makes!

Quicker and better lather, feels much nicer and softer with no skritchiness on my boat, it holds much more lather and transfers it better.

All in all, a far more satisfying experience than the generic Shaving Shack Buccaneer brush.

Might have to upgrade from my cheapo brush then. I quite often get hairs coming off it and onto my face.

Do any electric shavers exist that shave as close as an Gillette razor ?
Probably not, no. And by 'Gillette razor', if you're talking about the Mach3 type razor then they won't shave as close as a DE safety razor. The electrics really are the bottom of the pile.

"As close as a blade or your money back" was the marketing slogan of the Remington Microscreen. I wonder how many times they had to give the refund.

On an unrelated subject, I've tried a few different creams now and out of all of them I far prefer the scent of Taylor of Old Bond Street Shaving Shop.

Anyone know a good straight edge razor for upto £100? was looking at Dovo models which are supposed to be good but would like to hear some views/experiences of people from here.:p
