Got my Edwin safety razor, foam, and blades. 2 shaves in and really impressed. However anyone got a good guide on how to use? I'm cutting my face about 7 times ATM. Also how long should I use one blade before I chuck?

Cheers.

How do they compare to feathers?
Not as sharp but much smoother. Different people prefer different blades though, I don't mind the Feather blade and it doesn't cause me any irritation but the ASCO will be my 'comfort' blade.

Use a blade until it doesn't feel comfortable any more, when it starts tugging or causing irritation. There's no set figure, it will depend on your beard growth, the blade type and how you shave.

The chances are that you're using too much pressure if you're cutting yourself. Let the weight of the razor do the work, don't force it. Don't overshave, never let the razor touch your face if there's not lather there (this is a general rule, not everyone needs to do this but it's worth remembering). Have a look at this thread on the B&B forum, there's a lot of good stuff there,

So, I just had what I believe to be my closest shave ever using a circa 4 pound DE razor I bought from boots at the weekend.

I am eager to get a nicer razer as I do dislike the plastic materials used with this one. I have been looking at the DE89L, but have also heard good things about Merkur.

Hmm decisions!

I had quite a shock this week when I bought a Wilkinson's razor... no, not Wilkinson the blade maker, I meant the shop, as in Wilkos!

Costs £50p a blade and I get a damn good shave out of it for a week. Not too bad, don't think I'll be going to back to premium supermarket blades any time son.

i only clean my razor when i change the blade. (2 shaves a blade)

i spray it with Dettol and a quick scrub with a toothbrush if needed, done.

When i buy vintage razors i soak them in a cup of boiling water until it goes cold, soak in the dettol and scrub with a toothbrush if needed.

Evening Sir Feek. :p How do you clean your razor? My method is to dunk my razor in a large cup full of white vinegar and shake it around every so often but leaving the razor in for a few hours. :o
Take the blade out, run it under warm water and a quick scrub with a nail brush. Dry it off with a towel because I always know where my towel is.

I'm glad you have the time, I use mine everyday and so don't have time to clean it.

Once or twice a week should be perfectly acceptable.
I also shave daily, I didn't expect to but after switching to using a DE razor I'm finding that I look forward to my daily shave. I've even been shaving at weekends! It takes about 30 seconds to clean the razor after a shave so it's not exactly time consuming. I don't keep my razor in the bathroom and I won't leave the blade in it. I'm not saying you should clean it daily, it's just part of my routine.

Postie's been!

My bathroom is very small, we don't have a cabinet, just a window ledge. Besides, in idle moments or if I'm watching a film or similar, I find myself picking up the razor and dry 'shaving' myself from time to time. There's no blade in it, I'm just effectively practising getting the angle right of the razor against my boat and getting the hang of using no pressure.

I won't leave my shaving brush in the bathroom either, it's a damp environment and I like the brush to dry properly.

Can anyone recommend a decent facial hair trimmer? I've been using the BaByliss I-stubble for the last 2 years and it's given up.

Looking for something that does at last the same shortness (0.4mm shortest setting) and can run on batteries. The i-stubble was good, but it could have lasted better as I only really trim about twice a week.

<insert general "why don't you just shave with a razor blade!" comments here>

Sliced the top of my finger quite badly with my Merkur Futur last month. Unbelievably painful.

The cut was very deep and almost completely encircled my finger; it probably needed stitches, but I decided it would be OK if I sealed the wound immediately and kept it tightly bandaged for as long as possible. This is how it looked after a few days of DIY first aid:

It's healed well, but I reckon the scar is permanent.
