The Manly Shaving Thread

Got a reply to my email to Shaving Shack today. :) They expect a limited number of Merkur 34Cs to be made available to them on Monday. So I put in an order for the 10 Feather/Derby/Israeli blade pack, a Merkur 34C, a plastic travel case for the Merkur, Proraso Pre and Post shave cream, a pure Badger shaving brush, a shaving brush drip stand, Taylor of Old Bond St Shaving cream (sandalwood) and for the free gift I got another 30 Israeli blades. Well it was that or multivitamins. :p

So I'm hoping to have the stuff posted on Monday but from the email I got Tuesday despatch is a possiblity; I've been told that I've definitely been allocated one of the Merkurs they're expecting to get sometime on Monday. Hopefully will be in time for me to shave on Wednesday night for my job interview Thursday PM. :)

I got that e-mail too, so I ordered a 38C and assorted blades from SS. The blades just arrived

Did you order through TopCashBack(or somewhere)? 8% cashback on SS purchases.

Treet blades are known to be hit and miss, go and buy some super iridium blades. ;)

I might buy a merkur slant bar at some point, meant to be very aggressive.

Right then i now find my merkur futur at 6.5 isn't enough, im now developing a very light touch and the shaves are great but i know there's more, i've gone and ordered a cheap straight gold dollar 200 and strop from mysterydoll on ebay, it will be honed and i won't be stropping before i shave just in case i get that wrong.

Wish me luck!!

Apparently they give a very good shave and are easy to hone, an ideal starting razor.

Gillette Fusion Gamer makes me laugh. Penny Arcade featured it a year or so ago, appropriately censored here:

Merkur blades are very tempting, but very pricey. Is it worth it if I don't really have any problems with the 3-blade disposables I use now? My stubble eats razors, I'm used to never getting a perfectly smooth shave and even though it sounds like sandpaper when I shave my skin never gets irritated, so would I really notice the benefit?

Merkur blades no they have a terrible rep though very rarely some folk like them, for me it's super iridium blades very sharp and smooth.

Yes you really would notice the difference both in price and shave with practise you'll have a smoother cleaner shave but i would get a brush and soap first because canned goo is terrible imo.

Just popped in to say that Gillette Fusion are the worst blades I've ever used. The blades just don't last a good length of time before they become painful to use. Which is weird, seeing as how we didn't have this problem with the last generation of Gillette blades (not this extent, anyway). Seems to me like they've engineered this on purpose to sell more blades, their latest crappy advert about changing blades more often adds credence to this.

You think that's bad from what i've heard they're going from 4/8 to 3/6 packs yet the price will remain the same.

Wonder how many converts that'll create, p&g really are shooting themselves in the foot.

I read the beginnings of this thread and went and ordered a Merkur Futur razor, but now feeling like i probably should have gone for the 34C. I'm not too fussed about price, just the product. Is there much in it or is the 34C certainly the better product?

[EDIT] Bah, never mind. It seems there's so little in it i may as well cancel the Future and go for the 34C just for the sake of saving a couple of quid. I've also ordered a pack of 5 Derby Extra blades on Kainzs' recommendation :)

Yeah it's not so much one is better than the other but the Futur is supposed to be pretty aggressive despite being adjustable whereas the HD is good for beginners. I got the 34c about 2 months ago and it's been a learning experience that's for sure :D. I'd get a few different types of blades to be honest since what's good for someone else isn't necessarily good for you, I didn't think the Merkur blades were that bad, they aren't ultra sharp but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I used Merkur first without problems, Derby's where the first blade first use ate my face for breakfast but were fine on the 2nd, and now I'm trying Personna's which seem to be pretty good so far. I've also got some others to try.

Did you go for a brush, cream/soap, etc too Streeteh?

:p

You've almost gone the same way I did! I initially bought the Futur 720 I think it is from Mankind. The blade change system on this was full of fail as you can cut yourself easily, the head was too large and the handle had sod all grip. I should have seen that as a weakness but got caught up in the rush of getting away from my Fusion.

Bought the 34c a week later and it was brilliant in my big hands :o My only issue is that the handle is short. The 38c solves this. The badger&blade reviews site can set me straight.

On the blades front i'm going for trial and error, and when it's £2.10 inc postage for 5 Derby blades i figure i can't go wrong! What put me off the Futur was the lack of any grip on the handle and the fact that it's supposed to be more aggressive than the 34C. I'm not fussed about a close shave, i just want to stop getting a rash on my neck from the rubbish, multiblade pap that i currently use. Even if it's no better i figure i'll be saving money in the long run so at least abusing my face with sharp metal won't be so painful in the wallet department.

I have tiny girl-hands so the short handle on the 34c doesn't worry me :p

I haven't bothered with soaps/gel etc because i've got 3 cans of newly bought shaving foam to use (buy 2 get 1 free at the supermarket). From reading this thread i now know they're rubbish but i figure i may as well use them for now and take some time considering soaps etc.

Sadly i'm quite excited at the chance of not having to put up with a shaving rash rubbing on the collar of my shirt all day at work, i so very much hope i get along with these types of razor.

Had a 34C for a few weeks now (got it from http://connaughtshaving.com/ as shaving shack was constantly out of stock, good service from Connaught), it came with a Merkur blade which I haven't tried yet and a pack of Treet blades which have been fine but I'll probably try a selection pack to see if there's any I get one better with.

I have used a Mach 3 for years, tried and hated a Fusion when they came out and thought I'd try the Merkur after the various threads on here. So glad I did, getting a much better shave, just takes a little more care and attention.
