I used to get rashes, but since I started shaving in the shower with normal hair conditioner and a cheap cartridge razor I've not had a problem. Saves some time too.
No need for a mirror, after the first pass you can just feel out any rough bits.

Thinking about getting a DE for cost reasons, Is it vital to use a mirror, brush and all the pre - during - after balms soaps and oils with these; or could I just use it with conditioner in the shower like I do now?

Tagging this thread for tomorrow to have a read through, I'm 1 of the unlucky people who has to shave once every day at least to keep stubble off, hate it, and I burn through blades really fast.

For my current shaving exploits (well, near future), I have ordered 50 x Personna Platinum Chrome blades at a cost of £6.49 from Connaught Shaving via eBay (I hope they're good blades), and a bowl of Nanny's 'Handmade Shaving Soap That Delivers', also from the bay.

I gave up using soap for ages, and stuck with gel/foam. The soap I had was really cheap and nasty, so hopefully the stuff I bought will be better (I'm sure it will).

Just got a Merkur 28C (in brushed silver) with a selection pack of blades (Derby, Feather and Israeli).
I've been using a far too cheap DE for a couple of weeks and had to switch back to the fusion every now and again to pick up the bits I had missed.
First shave this morning with the Derby blades.

Wow that's sharp!
BBS on one side and not so bad on the other, slight nick on the jaw line. It takes a bit longer than the Fusion to shave with so I'll be hanging on to it for a while for the times I just need to shave and go.

Just need to play with some soaps and creams to get the lather I want now.

I've been using a Merkur HD for about a month so far and it's been pretty positive so far especially versus mach3. Started off using Merkur blades and now I'm trying out Derby's. Merkur had hardly any nicks or cuts, first shave with Derby's I cut myself about 5 times lol. 2nd and 3rd shaves with them have been fine though with no cuts.

Getting more used to it with every shave and the only downside is having to do 3-4 passes at the mo which takes me a good half hour or so but I do it in the evenings when I've got time to burn.

Using Proraso pre/after shave balm which is excellent and Avocado TOBS shave cream with a Edwin Jagger Best Badger brush. I want to try Castle Forbes Lime and Lavender though after hearing great things about them.

I got a Merkur 39c slanted razor with Woolfat soap and a badger brush recently. The main reason was because all the other stuff I have tried gives me razor rash and the blades do not last very long. I wanted to address that and was willing to invest to do it.

My DE technique needs serious work as it was only on my 3rd attempt that the razor burn was not as severe. First time I resorted to Vaseline post shave to calm the irritation (and boy does it work - shave at night, use vaseline, sleep, next morning no irritation or redness :) )

I'm using the Israeli blades that came with the order from shaving shack, and since I have 30 of them to get through I better get used to them.

Cheeks etc fine. Jaw line fine. Neck = trouble (due to the multiple grain angles on it needing 3 or 4 passes), Chin = disaster.

The chin is where I am having the most problems. Can't seem to get close without nicking myself. I'm going to have to continue reading up and adjusting my technique till I get it right.

I am enjoying shaving with a DE, but boy does it take commitment to learn to get it right.

You have to watch derby blades they are very hit and miss, usually the ones with the vertical writing contains the most duds stick with the horizontal ones if you can, avoid merkur blades the the plague they are bad news.

Personally i highly recommend astra superior blades, they are sharp but i find that great and very smooth i get on very well with them, i have some super iridium here which are meant to be better again so i can't wait to fire them up.

Israeli blades are ok they are what i call a safe bade certainly nothing special once your technique is sorted you'll be craving for something sharper.

Razor wise id highly recommend the ej de89l, they're out of stock of that particular one as the handle is machined so a bit grippier the other three left are the same razor just different in appearance.

That's the code on my card! Thief! :p

Had an awesome shave today with no nicks and I think I've mastered it with my 34c and my new Derby Extra blades. They're well better then the rustic Merkur blades I have...

Edwin jagger sea buckthorn soap seems to last absolutely ages too. I am just unsure about one thing, after the shave is it good to rinse out my brush with warm/hot water? I normally then shake it gently dry and leave it upright to fully dry before placing it back in it's upright box.

Been thinking of making the move from Fusion to a Merkur for a while now, however I have a couple of slightly raised small moles on my jaw line, causes no issues with the fusion, but apparently saftey razors have a tendancy to slice straight through moles ?

Anyone with any experience ?

I have two small raised moles, one of my chin and the other on my jaw line and I've had no problems with using my Merkur but I do take extra care around that area.

Well after reading all this I think I will take the plunge and test out using a safety razor, though I am going to go budget to see if I get on with it.

I am looking at getting the below -

and

http://www.carterandbond.com/detail.phtml?pID=AS1000&filter=Shaving:Razor+Blades

I usually shave in the shower and do the usual scrubbing etc and try to shave only 3 times a week 9mon, wed, fri).

I usually use nivea shaving cream and afterwards I use Clinique M-Lotion and Clinique Post Shave Healer. The healer is running out but I already have some Anthony Logistics For Men Razor Burn Repair.

My skin is very sensitive and quite dry so what advice can anyoone give in regards to what cream / gel / soap to use?

I would prefer to order it from the above website as I helped him set up and he is a mate. :)
