Used it, wasn't a fan. I just didn't really like the feel or the scent. I use ToBS Shaving Shop aftershave gel/balm which has a mild but nice scent that doesn't last too long. It's nicely moisturising and a 75ml tube lasts for absolutely months!

Med Preps are back in stock at Connaught. Get 'em before I do :D

Went to try them so a pack of 10 costs £6incl delivery.

Just ended up getting the trail pack for £12 for 45blades instead.

Winner really, and I get to try new blades :)

well so far my manly shaving is a disaster.

my skin just cant take it, DE89 with a couple of different blades, some decent foam which i got very foamy and some good moisturizer. got a fair few cuts, then a rash and then half of my face flaked away.

Method? warm face with hot water. Apply lathery foam, down stroke, across stroke the first time. Shave was ok, probably about as close as my electric razor

Did this shave a few more times still had plenty of nicks etc.

I then did a gentle upward stroke after the down and across stroke, and boy did it just make a mess. I need to look clean and sharp for work and this was anything but, I then suffered again with a malting face.

Both times i finished with a Alum Block or as i like to call it, the stingy block

not for me?

Cream is Taylors of old street for sensitive skin
Moisturizer is the same
Brush is a Edwin Jagger
Blades used are Asta SP's and SS's.

Personally I find the Proraso Ultra Sensitive cream is awesome. I have 3 tubs of TOBS but none give a soothing feel I get from the Proraso.
All the issues your having though are just technique. A simple shave with and then across the grain will give you a decent enough clean shave for a day or two.
My face melted the first few times. Mainly down to trying too many passes, pressure applied and not knowing which way my hair grows. I was shaving down my neck which is actually against the grain on my first pass. Ultimate fail and the main cause of my neck rashes. Stretch the skin to make hair cut easier.

This is learnt from my mistakes!

i expected too much from it but the process is messy and takes ages and it just doesnt fit into an active lifestyle with a busy family, im not used to taking more than 5 mins in the bathroom. if your a single man with plenty of time and having a very close shave is of no issue that it takes almost half an hour then this is all good. i am glad i tried it tho, now ive gotta sell all this pointless gear or give it away lol but it was only about 35 quid altogether

Get out of bed 5 minutes earlier then?? If it takes you 5mins to shave with a mach 3, it takes 10 mins with a DE. It's hardly time munching. This comes from a guy who has to shave every day and has to be in work early, on the dot, everyday.

Sorry you didn't get along with it. Take your time and focus on your technique and I'm sure you will see much improvement. Be sure you are applying no pressure when shaving. I mean NO pressure too, not even a slight press. Let the weight of the razor progressively cut the hair down with each pass. As soon as the blade starts tugging, bin it.

Some observations as a newbie for newbies:

So I just completed my first DE shave. I used a Merkur 23C (long handle, cheap, shiny), the Merkur blade that came with it, a combination of normal bar soap and a creamy moisturising shower soap thing. I haven't yet bought any proper soaps or a brush yet, so I had to experiment with what I had lying around the bathroom.

The first pass was fairly slow and careful. It went with the grain, mainly using the weight of the shaver to cut - and it probably achieved the same closeness as two passes with my old Gillette Mach Thing. (The funny thing is that even though I could feel the blade cutting the beard, I couldn't actually tell if there was a blade in the head or not.)

The second stage (lathering up, a pass against the grain and neatening up) went just as easily as the first. I did a third pass on some areas which I hadn't done particularly well. Now, if I'd have done the same amount of work with my old razor I would definitely have nicks, shaving rash on the sides under my jawline and some burn on my dainty cheeks. With this DE shaver, apart from a few tiny, tiny nicks I have none of those negative aspects. NONE!

After, I used some L'Oreal moisturising post-shave stuff to stop it all drying out - again, just what I had lying around the bathroom.

Even as a complete novice with a dodgy right elbow I found it all very easy to do.

The shave is so close I'm almost adolescent, but the best thing is that I have absolutely no discomfort. For years, I felt that putting up with the itchy, painful burn that came after shaving was just something you had to do. I guess this proves me wrong.

Thanks to everyone in this thread for making me try it for myself.

Good job. I don't think there are many that got an irritation free first shave. I know myself I had a fair amount of burn but that was just because of the pressure I used to use from my old razor. As my experience increases I have very little if any burn now.

I know one thing this week. If you have a cold and have been wiping your nose all day when you go to shave your lip under your nose it will sting like a mother ****er.

i put a brand new feather blade in on weds night, just come to have another shave and the things got rust on it??

i take it that the blade should be removed from the razor and dried after use? i left it in the razor head and the moisture must have ruined it.

Another thing I noticed if you are starting off is looking for that perfect all over baby smooth shave each and every single time, its not going to happen, theirs just some days you have a small patch a little bit more rough, do not keep hammering the blade over the same are of skin all the time, its leads to nicks, rash etc.

I highly recommend Proraso Pre shave as well if you have sensitive skin, really does add a laying of slickness to your skin and noticeably softens up the hairs to cut easier. Lasts for an absolute age as well from the rate ive been using it.

^ Double razor choice fail! ;):D

Well, my vintage Schick Krona blades were blunt :( Great razor though, you can see why Bic copied the injector design during the 70s. Time to order some new Personnas from connaught! :)

Until then...

All three red tips versions? Lucky ****! :p You'll need a rack or display case soon :D

Sarge78, very nice. Is that a Gillette Popular?

Yep, a #45 from 1938. Probably my favourite razor. :)

It's (almost) warm enough for a super cool menthol shave! Ingram and Proraso green make a brilliant uber lather!
What's a good replacement for Nivea Cool kick? Floid or Myrsol blue maybe? Something from Pinaud or DR Harris? Wouldn't mind trying Trumpers Skye but it's too expensive :( Any suggestions chaps?
