The Manly Shaving Thread

I've had the merkur that gets recommended on here for beginners and love it. I've realised from reading this thread today that I actually use the Proraso ultra sensitive cream in a tub. It seems that's not the best one to be using for a good lather?

At the moment I can only really shave after a shower as my hair is quite corse so not sure how else I can make shaving easier without having a shower first. How do you lot soften your facial hair for a shave?

Proraso in the tub is soft soap rather than cream, i get nice lathers out of the normal menthol soap in the green tub. I prefer the lather from MWF, VITOS or Lea though.

If you use a bowl to build a lather, here is a useful video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y0p1Xt2b8I (he uses the same ikea tins as me for soaps :) )

My stubble is like sand paper, but as i face lather spending a couple of minutes building a lather, the only prep i need is a splash of cold water (i'm also a cold water shaver).

I have just placed my order for my first DE razor. I got fed up buying the gillete blades, prices are ridiculous...

So i have got

Merkur 34c
Variety of blades to try
Proraso Shaving Cream Jar
Proraso Pre and Post shave Cream
Badger brush

looking forward to receiving them and hopefully getting a decent shave.

:)

Just a reminder for those of you with more than one razor.
When you've been having a work morning shave with your gentler razor for weeks and then on a whim decide to break out your more aggressive one for an "after Bank holiday weekend" shave. Remember that the technique is probably a bit different.

Now my neck hurts!

You wont for awhile, just be aware and expecting this.

I keep shouting it but only cause it was my biggest mistake starting out, use NO pressure on the handle/ blade.

I realise that it will take practicie to get a good shave and I am prepared for that. Have taken note of the no pressue point. :)

If anybody else has any other pointers it would be appreciated. Am going to have a look at some videos that off advice soon.

Thanks

My technique is the same, no matter what razor I use whether it's my really mild '66 Superspeed or the Merkur 39C 'Sledgehammer'. Slow and steady, no pressure. The only thing different is the angle.

It's the angle I messed up on. That and I wasn't taking the care I should have/rushing it.

Still, great shave everywhere else on my face!

Also, learn the direction of hair grow. For 15+ years I've been shaving incorrectly which has lead to rashes.

As others have said, take your time. No pressure should be needed as the razors are already weighty.
Used to hate shaving, now I look forward to it :(

Finally ordered a new brush, after giving up on getting a reply from pens of the forest. Gone with a new forest high mountain badger 2224, hoping to see a marked improvement on my Edwin Jagger.

Got my first DE razor the other day (and Edwin Jagger De89bl), and have been using it with some TOBS sandlewood cream. Most of my face is fine, but I am getting a terrible rash on my neck. Using Feather blades that I got as part of a selection pack. I'm applying no pressure and going slow, so not sure what I am doing wrong. Have tried cold and hot water shaving. Help!

Your sure your first pass your shaving in the same direction as hair growth?

Mine grows from left to right and slightly upwards. This was the source of my neck issues.
Also be sure to make sure your keeping the skin taught when shaving. Turn your head and look upwards to make sure the skin isn't loose.
For the first few shaves until your happy avoid multiple passes on your neck.

I wouldn't bother throwing more money at it. It will be something your doing wrong.
So when you shave your neck your first pass is to shave in multiple directions away from the adams apple?

Never go against the grain on your neck. I have the same issue, against the grain anywhere else on my face is no problem but on my neck is a no no.

I have the same issues although I like to try and get it close on the neck for the shirts I wear for work. I have good success with the grain, across and then across again the opposite way. Almost as good as a shave against the grain.

Can I ask how in teh name of blue hell can you shave across the neck? lol
