Definitely settled on Gillette Silver Blues. Tried a whole bunch of different blades from a sample pack and they suited my sensitive skin and soft whiskers the best. Tried a shave with my old Feathers just to see if I was merely imagining any differences and......blood everywhere :D My god, it was like I was skinning myself alive!

For anybody with the above skin/whisker type - give Silver Blues a shot!

Yep it's Beauty at Creightons, thanks pooley.

The St James Cedarwood & Clarysage cream comes in a fantastically oversized glass jar and has the same strong fragrance as the cologne. (might not be the best for guys with sensitive skin)
At £2 per 100ml it almost feels like steeling, lovely stuff :D

You really need to hit youtube and do some research on technique. Plenty of advice on there. Perhaps start with

Mantic59

Had a look through some of his videos. Tried again today after a hot shower, applied then took off and reapplied the lather (Kyle Technique?). Used an Astra blade and the effect this time was much better, no nicks and a closer shave. Two main differences, I really took my time, and used much shorter blade strokes.

Still having some difficulty doing my neck properly though!

If you have a white ring of old soap/cream at the base, that is probably the cause. lather up with washing up liquid and put the brush in a glass of water for a few minutes, then rinse it. put in in a glass of water with white vinegar (i use about 20% vinegar), leave it for a few minutes, then rinse and let it dry. once dry, repeat if the white ring is still there.

I intend to give my shaving brush a clean. These instructions seem pretty good, however I'm having difficulty before I've even begun - Sourcing the vinegar! The most obvious 'white vinegar' I could find was 'white malt vinegar'. I bought this but reading online it would seem 'white vinegar' is not the same as 'white malt vinegar'. I had another look during the weekly shop and within the huge range of vinegar available the only other similar item I could find was 'white wine vinegar'... Not sure if this is any better or not!

So, any advice on *what* 'white vinegar' I should be purchasing? :)

Thank you!

Decided to have a really close shave this morning as it was the final evaluation for promotion this afternoon and holy heck do i regret it. I haven't shaved against the grain in around 20 years since i was in my early 20's and waiting to meet the missus and now i remember why. My neck is one big red blotchy mess!

Hope i don't get the little white spots or ingrown hairs again lol.

Here is what came today from the above mentioned place. They managed to send me some balm stuff instead of some no10 shave cream but not too fussed. I look forward to testing it.

As above, can anybody give details on exactly what 'white vinegar' I need to clean my shaving brush? Based on what I've found onine the 'white malt vinegar' stuff I've picked up is not suitable...

you should be able to get it in any supermarket, white vinegar is also called distilled vinegar, it's the clear stuff :)

about 50p for 500ml in asda

Distilled vinegar

The term "distilled vinegar" is somewhat of a misnomer, because it is not produced by the distillation of vinegar, but rather, by the fermentation of distilled alcohol. The fermentate is then diluted to produce a colorless solution of about 5% to 8% acetic acid in water, with a pH of about 2.4. This is variously known as distilled spirit or "virgin" vinegar,[6] or white vinegar, and is used for medicinal, laboratory, and cleaning purposes, as well as in cooking, baking, meat preservation, and pickling.[7] The most common starting material in some regions, because of its low cost, is malt. In the United States, corn (maize) is the usual starting ingredient for most distilled vinegars, such as Heinz.[8]

I bought some of the St. James cream, unfortunately i get the same reaction to that as i do to TOBS cream, so Creighton's must use the same base..

It's probably triethanolamine, that's the only potential irritant left in Creightons base (assuming it's not a synthetic found in the parfum/fragrance)

Gutted. :( That rules out virtually every UK cream then! T&H, TOBS, Trumpers, Harris, Simpsons, Bodyshop, Castle Forbes, Salter, RS, natural grooming, bluebeards and probably a few others.
I think the only parfum free versions are T&H ultimate comfort, Simpsons luxury and Castle Forbes (although they do have a few extra basic scent modifiers)

Why do we always pay more for less? :D

Drop them an email, you never know they might send some out. :) Does the Cologne Balm have a light hand cream scent too?

I used the shaving cream the other day. Another top product from T&H/Creightons, this could easily become my favourite lightly scented cream.

I think you might be right, the only 2 creams i've used that are ok (Proraso Blue, Palmolive) dont have that in them, i just googled the ingredients :)

I use soaps almost exclusively so it's fine. The only soap out of the 15 or more i've tried that gave a similar problem but no where near as bad, was Boots shave stick.

I really like the St.James and TOBS creams i've used though, if it wasnt for the burning skin sensation and red blotches!
