Well it's my first annual review after getting a Merkur (34c i think) last christmas and after a few teething problems [read nearly taking my thumb off whilst cleaning it and the odd nick] I could never go back to a supermarket blade.

I even got my bro in law one for christmas this year as it pains me seeing him use those disposable bic's

Whatever came with the starter pack I ordered, Taylor of old Bond Street, Eton College.

Too much pressure is usually the problem to start off with.
You really don't need to push the razor on to your face, just use the weight of the razor to do the work.

And the 3 passes thing is so you don't use too much pressure! Most of the shaving sites say it is hair reduction, not hair removal. So you reduce your stubble with each pass until it is acceptable to you.

After watching a couple of videos today, I might give another go tonight when I get home. I'm used to pressing quite hard when shaving so having to re-learn everything isn't fun :(

Had a shave the other day with my new razor and ended up with a hell of a rash and little spots of blood all over my neck and top lip :(

What the hell am I doing wrong?

i find, that sometimes if i dont let my hair on my face grow a bit before shaving, my razor drags over my beard/moustache which causes nicks, and a lot of em. i.e i find it best to shave after a couple of days rather than waiting two or so days then shaving.

do you have a styptic pencil yet? they are only a couple of quid from boots, and stop bleeding immediately when applied. they last ages too.

I've never been able to shave every day as I always ended up in a rash, so tend to leave it a few days. I think it was a combination of shaving too soon and not knowing how to shave with a DE razor.

i was the same when i first started DE shaVing you just need to take it slowly. i can whizz over my face now in about 5 minutes :D merkur 34CHD here.

What to use?

Shaving Soap (Ie, Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shave Soap), Shaving Cream (Ie,Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream) Or shaving Oil?

Which will be best?

I'm not so sure there's a massive difference, soaps harder so you can mix it in the bowl, cream usually you get a splodge on your brush & mix it as you go or in your hand or whatever, someone feel free to tell me I'm wrong on this as I've only used soap so far.

I have been looking at getting a Merkur 34C but would someone mind putting me together a list of things i would need to start me off so i can get them all together.

Thanks

wash, cheap squirty gel/foam, mach 3, rinse, dry, moisturiser. that works fine for me, i hate balm as it's useless.

those murkers do look nice but sound cheap chrome plated? rather than solid cro-moly after reading the how to care for it garb. or can bad water also damage solid chrome? did'nt think much could hurt solid chrome permanently, wash it after every shave? hassle.

I bought a Braun Cruzer the other day. It's good for beard trimming but I think I'll stick with my wet razor for the usual.

i rinse mine off like normal and put it back in the little cardboard packet it came in. not really hassle.

Hi Rizzy, yea if you dont mind whats some of the better brands of each?

Well, if your getting a Merkur 34c that's a good start, I brought myself one recently & it's very nice.
Soap/Cream - Taylors of old bond st comes highly recomended, Proraso is nice stuff, I like Mitchells wool fat shaving soap - if for nothing more than it sounds like the sorta thing your grandfather woulda used.
Blades - these seem to be very specific on personal taste, either just use whatever you'll likely get free with your purchase or buy a sample pack & try em out for yourself.
Brush - most people will say to buy the best you can afford, I can't really comment as I'm still using the one I got with my beginners set a few years back, but badger hair or pure bristle would be the way to go i'd guess.
