Just ordered myself the:

Starter Kit - Cream
• Super badger - EJ25 - Medium Ebony
• Taylor of Old Bond Street sandalwood
• Derby Extra (10x)
• Merkur 34C HD - Chrome

And the all important styptic pencil from The Traditional Shaving Company. Here's to many nicks and cuts!

Oh Xmas pressies.
I need to get the straight honed, anyone know where I can get it done in the UK?

Really down to personal preference. A lot of people like feather blades, but no matter how careful I am, I always cut myself to shreds with them. My choice is Israeli, can get a closer shave with them than any other blade without making myself look like a lost a fight with a barbed wire fence.

Shaving shack should still do a sampler pack of feather, Derby and Israeli iirc. Maybe worth a try?

Hey guys - question...

Treated myself to a Merkur for Xmas, having spent my life using disposables and Mach 3, Powerglide, etc. Problem is that I just can't get on with the Merkur at all - it leaves me feeling stubbly and nowhere near as smooth as my old Powerglide :( I'm using Proraso soap and a badger bristle brush. Could the problem be the free blade that came with the Merkur? I thought at first I just had to work on my technique or maybe I was too afraid of slicing myself....but it's not getting any better and I find myself longing for my Powerglide.

Suggestions?

I thought the free blade was rubbish to be honest but it might have been the way I was using my razor (it was my first wet shave in a very long time). I have moved onto the Israeli blades which feel a lot better, haven't tried the derby and feather blades yet.

If you havnt already try watching the mantic59 (I think thats right) videos on youtube some of those are helpful. Plus if you think the blades are not right for you simply go buy a sample pack somewhere, one of the perks of this type of shaving is how cheap the blades are so make the most of it.

How many passes are you making? I do three (down, down at an angle and up)

i got myself a wee merkur futur for christmas on the strength of this thread, have to say it's great compared to anything i used before!! first couple of shaves ended up with nicks here and there (mostly because i was s*****g myself!) but since then found it comfortable and no razor rash at all - not had the same problems as above, i usually only go for the one pass or maybe two if i've left it for a few days

What would people recommend?

Boots own brand for me, bought a pack out of desperation as I had run out and very happy with the results.

Curio - what setting do yopu have the razor on? The closer to 1 the closer the shave isn't it?

A couple of months using the Wilkinson Sword classic DE Razor, and I'm finding it quite easy to use! Not too keen on the King of Shaves "UltraGel Skin Cooling Advanced Shave Serum" though, so I might try getting a brush and shaving soap, and perhaps a little stand to keep the razor + brush from laying around the sink.

If you want to try a cheap but very good soap, almost all supermarkets have palmolive shave sticks hiding away. Cost about 50p and have all the same goodness of the more costly soaps. I prefer creams now myself, just easier for me to get a good no fuss lather from them. But the palmolive shave sticks are a bargain and really good.

I got very good results with E45 Junior Hand Body Wash, just use a very small amount and the hairs soften up very easily - then shave however you normally shave (no creams or foams needed)

For Christmas I got a Merkur C34 with a stand, proper badger brush and special lather in a dish! Very swish! I have wanted a proper wet shaving kit for a while!

The downside is after using a Mach3 for so many years the Merkur isn't very forgiving if you make a mistake. It does however give a REAL close shave, which I like! I find that I often cut my neck quite badly. It seems to be small little cuts rather than big old gashes though.

Any suggestions to avoid this happening?

No idea if it'll help or if it's just me, try shaving your neck in a different direction, if I go down my neck I slice it to bits without even trying, go up & very rarely any problems.

I can if you want?

Either that or neil miller but from what i've heard he's busy or just gone very quiet of late.

What razor is it btw looks like sheffield possibly half hollow?

mantic59 vids on yourtube, they should be supplied with all starter kits. The DE razor is as you say less forgiving and the modern razor has been covering up your sloppy shaving technique for years. It really is a skill every man should be taught but with modern life the way it is I guess the tradition of passing it on has died out.
