Time and practice, really. You'll develop a technique and once you've got it, it's like riding a bike. I'm sure mantic's YouTube videos have been mentioned before. Try those.

I have shaved with my DE89 about 6 times since Christmas with the 1 derby blade, Im changing it before my next shave.

Id never used a DE razor before and its the best thing Ive bought in many years, I havent knicked or cut my face once. Its been smooth shave and very clean.

Ive only been using that cheap wilkinson sword soap from supermarket as I forgot to buy a fancy cream. Its been fine though :)

Here it is:

Immensely happy with my first shave!... Two runs with the grain and one gently against!, only nipped the top off a spot that was hiding (under 1 weeks 'bum-fluff' growth)!.. took about 15 minutes (just to make sure I didn't end up like Freddy Kruger!)... My Face is Smooth with a capital SMOO!. :)

Just bought a starter set from the traditional shaving co, seems quite good.

I've read a good load of these pages & the 34c seems to be a decent choice, hopefully I'm going to like it.

25 years or so shaving & still looking for a good razor.........could this be the one lol.

Got my first piece of kit today. Well not really kit. In anticipation of getting my razor and brush I ordered some shaving cream. Went for the Cyril Salter Wild Rose. Smells nice.

I have noticed my second blade doesnt seem as sharp as my first, It felt a lot less smooth/close and was pulling a tad.

Whats the deal with the numbers on derby blades? is there a specific way up i should have them.

Now then gents. Got some new gear yesterday, a Muhle R41. Have any of you tried this razor? It's really aggressive, I think it's slice my cheek off if I wasn't careful! Had to take it really slow this morning.

I'm not a stranger to aggressive razors, one of my others is the Merkur 39c, but the R41 is on a whole new level.

My Merkur 38c HD and feather blades arrived yesterday and since then I have shaved my head twice with no cuts so far. I even shaved against the grain today which is something I could never do with my Gillette power thing without getting some serious razor burn. I also need a good brush and lather but I'm to much of a tight arse so will use my current sainsburys sensitive gel up first.

The numbers don't mean anything to the user. They are to do with manufacture. The question comes up fairly often. Someone at badger and blade asked someone that worked in a blade factory and it has something to do with the sharpening of each side.

I've found derby blades to be like that. A lot of duff ones. It has got worse only lately it used to be rare.

Really? I have to shave twice a day to keep smooth. My stubble grows super fast but there's not a lot of it, it's just the circle, nothing on the side burns.:p

Yup, I shave every 2 days, sometimes I let it go for 3 but it starts to look noticable then (I have very dark brown hair too). No burns for me, just above mouth, bit under and tiny bit on chin. Baby face... lol :(

Hi, really haven't got the time to go through 1400 posts,

what do you guys recommend for shave cream, about nearly out of Taylors of Bond Street Avacado cream, lasted ages and smells really nice.

Also found that out of all the blades I got from the Shaving shack, Gillette 7 o'clocks are the best... :)

For creams you can get on the high street I'd recommend Palmolive and Real Shaving Co. creams. The Palmolive is great stuff, often overlooked in favour of more expensive offerings. The Real Shaving Co. stuff is made by company that supply Taylors, Trumpers etc and really is great too, with a fairly neutral scent.

My favourite cream at the minute is Crabtree & Evelyn Sienna, I love the smell and the performance is great too.

Gillette 7 o'clock Sharp Edge (Yellows) are my favourite blade too. Right comination of smooth and sharp.
