The Cyril R Salter cream is really nice. I have the wild rose and it smells lovely. Lathers up great for a really slick shave.

I can also recommend Mitchells Wool Fat. I only got a soap because they are easier to take away but if anything can move me off creams it's this. It lathers really nice straight onto your face, so no need for a bowl. And no risk of splitting the packaging and having it poor on the contents of you suitcase.

Can someone tell me roughly how wide the mitchells wool fat soap is. I am wondering if I could just drop it in the empty taylor of bond st tub, to save me wasting money on bowl. The taylors tub is approx 8cm in diameter.

The box measures approx. 8cm across, its about a year old so its slightly out of shape, I think when it eventually runs out I will go for the bowl instead of cheap-skating again :D

Cheers for the replies guys.

Now I need brush recommendations, my brush is molting i.e losing several hairs each time I use it. I presume this is not normal? It is my birthday this week so I think I will treat myself to an upgrade. Looking in the £10-20 range.

I've got one from theshavingshack.com which was about £18. I had a bristle brush from Boots before that, the shaving shack one was a massive improvement and doesn't lose any hairs.

Looking for help with shaving rash. And before you recommend a bunch of products sadly I can't afford them! I know it works out cheaper over 27.23years, but still.
I use macca root body shop cream and a gillete mac5.

Recently I've been getting a bad shaving rash, red and blotchy. But now it's also mega itchy, sore during the day and also mega sore and bleeds during shaving. Any ideas to help?

I also moisterise afterwards, either nivea sensitive soothing balm, bio oil or a mixture created from the two.

I used to get a rash with Gillette Machs and it didn't disappear until I got a merkur and proper shaving kit. It also gives you a much better shave, your skin feels better and even a blunt blade with 8 uses is still FAR FAR sharper than a brand new Gillette Mach 42 blade head will EVER be! Going back to a Gillette was horrible and it felt like it was tearing teh heairs from my face. Never again!

Try doing the sums yourself, it's not some jokey amount of decades where you save money, you'll be in profit with a number of months compared to that Gilette Mach 5 pish!

I still have about 70% of my shaving soap and a number of blades left after I spent ~£65 on a complete shaving starter kit back in September (inc an extra x10 lovely Feather blades and Taylor of Bond Strt balm). Do the maths on your blades and other consumables in that period and you will have spent an awful lot more than I have.

I'll be able to make the blades last up to the 1 year mark since I bought them (x20), meaning each blade gets 18.25 days of use. I shave every 3 days in general which means each blade last me 6 shaves over tha 18 day period. An absolute bargain and it means you can have a nice brush, lovely soap and some good aftershave balm (still on my first tube too).

Buy this asap and don't buy any more Gilette blades again. Use up the rest of your aftershave balm until finished, then you'll have the nice one in the kit below to last you a while. Example of a kit below, just add extra feather blades x10 and either use your normal balm or pickup something nicer from their shop:

So I've been using the kit I got for a Xmas all this year, and I am getting better, only sliced my face up once (first time using Derbys).

I have aloe soap which take ages to lather, but seems to work once I get there, and only do 2 passes, down and across.

Not as close as my Proglide manages, but a damn site cheaper in terms of blades.

Does the wool fat stuff lather up easier?

Thanks but sadly I can't afford it. And I've got a badger's brush already (or maybe an artificial one, what ever the bodyshop sold) from trial and error I found the bodyshop cream the best for me too.

But you're spending a silly amount on refills for your gilette.

If you have a badgers brush then you could still use your normal cream to shave with for the time being.

Pickup a Merkur 34C for £30 and a pack of x5 derby blades (£1.50) and x10 feather blades (£3.50).

That's £35 in total which is peanuts and the blades will last you at a guess, 9 months or so.

Think about the long term benefits, both the lack of shaving rash and you'll effectively be earning money vs your current gillette blade situation.

If price really is an issue head to Boots & pick up something like this it's pretty much what I started using when I 1st decided I'd had enough of multiblade things & didn't want to drop a lot of money on something I might not have been any good with.

33C Merkur Razor (will last a lifetime if you look after it)£22.90
100 Double Edge blades £10.99
Total = £33.89 for 1 year shaving based on 1 blade every 3-4 days.

Gilette Mach Razor Blades Pack of 4 @ £6.99
Total = £87.38p using 1 cartridge every 6-7 days

Logic does not compute to logic

Is there some sort of starter kit I should be looking at here? I have a fairly typical face, but get shaving rash every time. Could someone point me in the right direction? Cheers.

Not a starter kit per se, just buy a decent razor, brush and cream then buy a multi pack of assorted blades so you can figure which your skin prefer?

I was anticipating this - but if the razor doesn't make much of a difference, only the blade, then why are there so many varieties?! :D

I guess I just want a starter pack so I can enjoy ripping my face to pieces :p

I started DE shaving two months ago (my kit is a few pages back)... haven't nicked myself once so far. And unlike before, I am now enjoying shaving and I don't get rashes anymore. It's amazing what proper brush, cream and blades can do :)

All DE razors can use the same blades, so getting the right blade for you is arguably most important. Most features of a DE razor involve the adjustment of the angle at which the blade shaves your face:

- The Open Comb razors have a different safety bar, allowing you to press the blade closer to your face.
- Some razors have a slanted bar, allowing you to adjust the amount of exposed blade touching your face on a stroke-by-stroke basis.
- Some razors have an adjustable screw that controls how much blade is exposed against the traditional straight safety bar.

Razors use different construction materials or handle lengths, or allow multiple blades within a single razor.

The general rule of thumb is that a DE razor should be used at about a 30 degree angle, and allowed to drag across the skin without much pressure.

The consensus seems to be that the Merkur 34C is the most common weapon of choice; it is weighty, good quality and excellent value. I use this razor and would recommend it.

The differences between different brands of DE blades is surprising. Moreover, a brand that works well for one shaver may be harsh and irritating for another. As a result, blade sampler packs containing several different brands of blades are an essential part of learning and exploration.

OK quite interested by this thread as never really had the nerve to pipe up and ask anyone about shaving.

I have a goatee and currently using an electric trimmer (some Rimmel thing) and a gillete razor which im finding is tearing my face to bits as my skin is so sensitive. After having read a bit of this thread thing ill be switching to a DE razor pretty soon but my question is... how the hell would I keep the rest of it trimmed? Pair or Scissors or some such?

May seem like a silly question but thought id ask :D If you cant ask silly questions on the internet where can you ask them
