I decided to try out a merkur as well.

Can anyone recommend me which one? And what blades to get?
I also need a good shaving cream and a good brush, can you recommend as well? (I use palmolive)

Also what about aftershave? (I almost never apply aftershave as I shower right after I shave) Should I use it or is it fine without? If I should, recommend me a good one please.

Thanks

I've got a Muhle R89 which has the same head as the DE89L and it's great. Not too mild, not too aggressive. Can't go wrong.

Anyone has any experience with this razor:
Edwin Jagger DE89L

I am leaning towards it as opposed to a Merkur 34C/38C

Reviews seem to say its a bit better than the Merkur

The head is a bit better, nicer finish, easier shave than the 34c. However, the handle is a bit of a negative for me, too slippery (unless you get the barley version).

Any help on good shaving soap, a brush and aftershave balm?

Thanks

The great thing is that there are loads of great soaps about. My favourite is Mitchell's Wool Fat, it's really slick and leaves my face feeling great. It has a large amount of lanolin (hence the wool fat) and I know some people can have a reaction to it, but if not it's a great soap.

I've used a Vulfix 660 brush until last week when I upgraded. It's a great little pure badger brush and won't break the bank.

For aftershave balm get some Nivea Repleneshing balm, it's great and you can get it everywhere.

Thanks for the replies.
I've been doing some research since yesterday.

I am planning to buy everything from the traditional shaving company as the shipping to Malta is cheap and I get 10% discount for first order so pretty good deal.
If anyone knows another shop which is great in the UK and has good deals please suggest away!

DE Safety Razor: Edwin Jagger DE89L - £22
Razor Blades: 5x Derby Extra (free with razor) + sample starter pack (5x Astra Superior Platinum, 5x Derby Extra, 5x Gillette 7 O'Clock Sharp Edge, 5x LORD Platinum, 5x Shark Super Stainless, 5x Treet Platinum Super Stainless and 5x Wilkinson Sword Double Edge) + 10 Feather Blades since they are not in the sampler pack - £11.50
Shaving Cream: Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream (This has got very good reviews so will try this as my first cream) - £6.95
Brush: EJ Best Badger EJ94 Medium - £26
Bowl: EJ Black Shaving Bowl - £21
Stypic Pencil - Cyril R Salter Styptic Pencil - £2.50
Aftershave Balm: Speick Aftershave Lotion with Witdh Hazel is a good one according to reviews, however I do not know from where I can get it in the UK.... Help?

Thanks

What's the recommended post shave balm?
I've been trying some Elemis post shave mask and it's pretty good but want to make sure I'm buying right first time.

Got to admit I love my Edwin Jagger DE89L with feather blades. Derby I thought were very poor. I honestly don't think I could ever go back to a gillette style razor again, it takes me no longer to shave with my EJ using a brush etc and the result is much better with far less irritation (pretty much zero if I concentrate)

not sure if you have ordered yet but i would choose a different brush - if you have ordered no issue... it will be ok.

Had my second shave today with my new Feather Popular razor (with Feather blades) and Proraso cream. Despite Feathers not being recommended with beginners, I did so anyway. :p

It's a mild, cheap and well constructed razor - I'd recommended it for beginners on a budget.

can you use a DE razor with normal gels, i tried mixing my own and using brush etc but never got on with it.

I've been using a Nivia gel and get on with it very well.

so can i use a DE razor with this?

Previously been using a Phillips electric shaver and since it never seems to get everything, mopping up with a dry shave using a tripple blade cartridge (until its so blunt it wont cut anymore :p) very occasionally I'll do a full wet shave with the tripple.

So I've decided to give DE shaving a try, mainly because I like the idea, I'm fed up of my electric being poor, and I hate the cost of the tripple cartridges.

Bought an Erwin Jagger DE89L, with Derby + Israelli + Feather blades. A super badger from New Forest brushes, Taylors sandalwood cream, Alum Block and a drip stand for the brush.

Definetely this will require some practice, the first shave using a derby blade wasn't great. Think I was being too mean with the lather, and too keen to apply pressure, was also surprising how quickly my face dried out making the razor start to stick. Gave up half way through the second pass due to several small cuts on my neck (some due to some previous irritation from a previous shave).

On the plus side, the alum block is amazing. Can't believe how well its stops small cuts instantly. Wish I bought one years ago, better late than never though ;)

The sandalwood cream smells great, really good stuff. Wasn't too sure just smelling the tub, but once you use it, it awesome.

I'm hoping I'll get a decent shave on the next try. Even if I'm left standing in a pool of my own blood! :p

Just take your time with it, I find it best if I don't apply any pressure at all - just let the weight of the razor do all the work.

Have a watch of vids on youtube for tips, mantic59 is worth taking a look at, just take into account those guys have been wet shaving for years.

I have found with my Murkur 38c that like you my skin dries very quickly so I try make sure I really soak with hot water the area I'm going to shave well and apply Shaving gel or whatever you use nice and thinly. If you have long stubble a fresh blade is ideal otherwise a blade normally last me around 3 shaves. But I use my Murkur for shaving my head which is a larger area than ur face. I very rarely cut myself and its normally my fault when I do.

I was trying not to apply pressure, its just all too easy to start pressing the razor into your face without thinking about it.

I'll certainly watch a few vids though, see if I can pick up a tip or two. ;)
