Well just arrived today!

1 off Merkur 34C Double Edge Razor (Safety razor)
1 off Feather Double Edge Razor Blades 10-pack
1 off Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream (150 g)

Going to have a go in a bit, will update :D

Exactly what i started with. The shaving cream gave me a rash sadly, but i've got mega sensitive skin. I gave it to my dad (who used to use gillette ****) and now he swears by bond street stuff.

I now use wool fat soap, lovely stuff, still happy with the 34C and feathers.

Well just had my first shave with my new kit and bar a couple of small nicks (I know why that happened) I have to say I am very pleased with the results. Foam worked well, blades and shaver also held up well I felt. I nicked myself after reshaving areas without foam, 28 years of shaving and you'd think I would know better but have to say it is a very close shave and better than any cartridge shave I've had and rest assured I've pretty much had most of em over the years! :D

Can anyone explain to me why Personna blades are so awful? I had some in the starter pack I had, tried one about three months back and got cut to shreds so thought I'd wait a while till I tried them again. I've now gone through a further three blades are they have all given me horrible shaves compared to the other blades I've tried so far.

On a side note, been using Jack Blacks after shave cooling gel recently and that is very good, I have extremely dry/flaky skin and it seems to work wonders.

Funnily enough I just order some Sandalwood cream and Feather Razors as a refill. Sandalwood cream I really like, (though it'll last me ages which is a tad upsetting as I want to try the other ones!) the feather blades I'm not too sure about. I used Derby ones before and really liked them, I don't seem to get on as well with the Feathers, lots of nicks etc.

just started to use the gillette 7 blades, nice first shave, so see how things go.

currently undecided on what shaving cream to get, usually go for Taylor of Old Bond Street, but feeling like a change.

I really struggle to see the big deal about these razors... I've used a mach 3 turbo for years and the heads can be used for months before changing (admittedly they do go fairly blunt, but still do the job fine, and a wipe on a pair of old jeans helps). Also it's possibly 1 in 100 times a mach 3 will cut you!

So for me a safety razor wouldn't be any cheaper which seems to be the major plus point of it. There's the time aspect as well... I don't have more than 1-2 mins in the morning to shave, any longer and I wouldn't get to work on time! :o

Months?! If that's the case you don't have proper growth. So a butter knife would probably do you fine ;)

friends - edwin jagger or merkur 34, this would be my first by the way!

i bought the Merkur 34c HD, been using it a week now, i like it (my first DE razor).

i bought a load of sample blades to work my way through, any other one's worth adding to the queue?

- Gillette 7 o clock yellow
- Gillette 7 o clock green
- Gillette 7 o clock blue
- Gillette super thin
- Wilkinson sword
- Astra superior platinum
- Tiger
- Shark super stainless
- Treet platinum
- Lord platinum
- Derby extra
- Supermax super stainless
- Supermax platinum

i might get a sample of supermax blue diamond blades to try, they are £13 for 350, so super cheap.

using derby's at the moment while i sort my technique out.

I'm far from an expert on blades and still getting used to these type of razors myself, but Feather blades, and israeli blades (both can be found on shaving-shack.com) are highly recommended. I haven't got around to using the Feather blades myself but the israeli blades are good from my experience.

Depends on where the blade was made, personna do some great blades but the majority are nothing special.

I have some personna med preps on the way, and they're meant to be rather special.

Connaught stocks them, trouble is they're double what they sell for in the us.

If you are looking for a sharp and smooth blade id suggest at trying a shark super chrome or a gillette green.

I also was between the Merkur 34 and the Edwin Jagger DE89L

After reading some threads in badgerandblade, I decided to go for the Edwin Jagger as it was recommended for a first time user....

been using it for 2 months now... still haven't nicked myself once...

Using Astra superior blades with it... will try feathers in the next shave!

You'll notice that the Feathers are more fierce in the skin contact so adjust the pressure on the blade to accommodate this. Feathers are my definite go-to blade when I want to look sharp (ha!) as hell. They're pretty fantastic.

How do you find the Jagger? I've read mixed reviews on the same website you mentioned.

thanks, i'll add them to the queue :)

Any advice for me chaps? Can't use electric and find that despite my best efforts with various Gillette cartridge/disposables I cannot wet shave daily without cutting my neck to shreds. Have tried various gels/oils, one-pass, against/with the grain and no joy, neck still looks like I have tried to shave using a kitchen grater. Couple of days growth and I can get an excellent shave though?

Anyway, thinking that a decent DE razor setup might be the way to go - do you think its worth a shot and if so can you recommend a decent setup for me please?
