Right I need to order some cream/soap. No idea what to get but budget is £10 and Sandalwood seems to be popular so wanna try that.

What's a good one to start with?

Thanks.

Sandalwood is nice but I prefer something more zesty for the morning shave. Taylor of old bond street does good stuff.

i picked up a palmolive shavestick from morrison's for 50p (49p in asda) at the weekend, the lather was great, it smells alright as well IMO. The cream was in there for under £2 as well.

Proraso Menthol soft soap (green) and TOBS Jermyn Street soap's and cream's are all good.

I've read good things about shave sticks, not just Palmolive, they seem to work well.

I've just ordered some Sandalwood and some Lime shaving oil. Just 30ml samples to see if it's a nice smell and if it makes a difference.

Proraso is often recommended at the cheaper end of the spectrum. I probably use it more than my TOBS, Geo F Trumper and other supposedly 'superior' (read : expensive) creams and it's great for those who like a menthol kickstart to their mornings. It's in a tube which makes it perfect for holidays or travelling.

In fact, thinking about it, it's probably my favourite cream.

May I just throw in an oddball from left field here then run away in the opposite direction from all the backlash?

Why bother with all this?

If you're shaving, you're not wanting to grow a beard or 'tache. And given the trend of the last decade or so fewer and fewer men are growing long facial hair.

Now think of how much time and money you will spend shaving throughout your lifetime. Probably an awful lot of money, the constant cycle of creams, lotions and the mighty expensive blades. Not to mention the time spent in the bathroom that could be spent doing other things. I'd wager a couple of thousand pounds if not several over a lifetime.

Why bother, if you're never going to grow a beard. It's wasted time. Why not just save up a bit of cash and have IPL/laser treatment? It'll save you a lot of money over time, you never ever have to shave again and it'll save you many many hours blankly staring into a mirror hoping to god you don't slice your face open.

Yeah it hurts a bit but well, you're all men aren't you? :)

Are those treatments permanent?

:p

I can see where you're coming from, personally I wouldn't spend all this money on shaving equipment either, I use an electric shaver every couple of days and just get it over with as quickly as possible, but each to their own.

ermmmmm.... think of all the electric you'd save!

Doing your bit for the environment and all that

Loving this so far, shaves like a mach 3. But closer, comfier and my face is clearing up no end.

No cuts either, infact I find it just as easy as using a mach 3. I can even shave at night and not get noticed for not shaving :)

What razor do you use?

I saw a pure badger brush with drip stand on a shaving site. It was there own brand and only £17. Any ideas which site. I've looked on shaving shack and traditional shaving.

Not the same but an option thanks.

Just been to Morrisons and picked up two Palmolive shave sticks for a pound. Should get me going just need to order a brush now.

I wonder if the Proraso stuff is the same as the Edwin Jagger pre-shave cream. Is it white, similar consistency to moisturiser and of course gives you the menthol hit. There's no other noticeable fragrance. It's not greasy either.

Ok used my 34C for the first time last night.

Thoughts.

Nice to hold.
Blades were a lot thinner than I expected.
On face shave was nice.

Problems is with my neck. Half way down my neck the grain turns the opposite way and it seems to cut me in lots of little dots which results in a rash. I only used normal Gillette shaving jel so is that why?

Also I got a stick thing from shave shack to stop bleeding. It works by just dabbing it on the cut. It stings though is that the right way to use it?

Yeah the stick does tend to sting a bit but that's normal. With time you'll get use to it both with the way in which your beard grows and your skin will adjust.

You could use a pre-shave oil/gel to soften the hairs and make the neck easier to shave. This works for me.

They're fiercely independent so I'd be surprised if they were making product for competitors. I've never tried the Jagger stuff; is it any good?

Proraso have just launched a new cream which I bought this morning. It's a sandalwood scented cream with no menthol ingredients and gets good reviews on the usual sites. I'll give it a bash tomorrow morning and report back :)
