Practice and a bit of faith. You're probably doing lots of passes with the cartridge razor. You need to find an angle to hold the razor at that cuts well - I tell by listening for the hairs being cut. I find I have to go against the grain - but not everybody does this, possibly a majority don't.

A large part of it seems to be setting your face up for a shave - making sure it's wet and lathered properly.

I think you may need to apply a bit more force - I am guessing of course.

Keep trying though - you'll get there.

It is a reputable place, however I'd not bother with anything but feathers now... I've used the Derby blades (not the Iraeli ones) and I'm happy with the feathers.

I've used Israeli blades & Feathers, but not the Derbys, I find the Israeli blades better than the Feathers for me although the Feathers a a lot sharper & seem to give a better shave - there just too aggressive for my neck & cut me to bits.

It's hard to tell someone how to shave, best bet would be head to youtube & have a watch of some vids, mantic59 has good advice usually, & there are plenty of others on there too.

I've brought from the shaving shack before & never had any problems with them, quite helpful when I was trying to get hold of a merkur 34c too.

My last two shaves i've used TOBS Jermyn Street Soap & TOBS Jermyn Street Cream. Bowl lathered both times and there wasn't much difference TBH.

When the cream runs out i've going to stick with soaps.

I think i might grab a Lime/Almond/Coconut Soap next.

I'm trying to get some pre-shave oil from eBay. Since it's just a carrier oil with essential oil in it then I grudge paying £16 for 60ml. I'm going to try a sample or two and then get a huge amount of it, and some glass dropper bottles and decant it into those.

Going to try a lime and a sandalwood.

I've now managed to shave smoothly on my neck/under my chin with no abrasion and it's just as simple as tilting my head back and going from right to left. I seem to get better each time - although there's times I seem to have taken a step back.

Any ideas if the main sellers Sandalwood have roughly the same smell to them? Would it be bad to use T&H aftershave with TOBS shaving soap for example?

Are you just trolling the thread, or did you try DE or open razor shaving and not find it to your satisfaction?

Tried a basic Gillette razor, but lots of cuts

Tried it 3 times last week but it seems to take away half my skin almost!

It does cut pretty close and hairs take longer to grow but perhaps ive used electric shavers for too long.

at least was safer lol

I'm not sure if I found it so incredibly easy to get started with it because I've been shaving for 20 years already and perhaps my skin is a tad tougher than younger men's?

The Halk, there are marked differences between Sandalwoods, generally to do with how 'leathery' they smell and the longevity of the fragrance. I have a strong preference for the Geo F Trumper variant as I find The Art of Shaving and TOBS examples to be too modern and too leathery respectively.

Ordered a merkur 34c and selection of blades. Going to use with normal shaving jel for now as going in the army so don't need the extra faf of a brush and cream etc. Will get that in the future.

Thanks. I missed the postie today with the cheap T&H Sandalwood cologne (£14), I'll stop by the sorting office on the way to work tomorrow. I'm about to order a sample for some sandalwood home made shaving oil - I'm also ordering some sandalwood + stuff oils from the same place to stink the rest of my home up, so if there's any particular blend that I like then I'll get that as a shaving oil.

Samsung - Shaving gel isn't great... you could get a tube of shaving cream and a badger brush and lather onto your face. It'd add less than 30 seconds to your routine.

Pity, because the lather is the best part of proper shaving. The difference between an aerosol cream and a quality lather prepared with a badger brush is huge and makes for a massive difference to the shave.

Indeeeed. Think I'd rather shave with a crap razor and a good lather than vise versa.

I'm no expert but from what I've read the more expensive brushes are nicer looking and feel softer but don't offer any real advantages, so the advice I've seen says go for a pure badger brush from a decent manufacturer. The silver tip etc stuff, at least as far as I've read isn't better.

The Edwin Jagger one I have does a good job.

Loving this so far, shaves like a mach 3. But closer, comfier and my face is clearing up no end.

No cuts either, infact I find it just as easy as using a mach 3. I can even shave at night and not get noticed for not shaving :)

Right I need to order some cream/soap. No idea what to get but budget is £10 and Sandalwood seems to be popular so wanna try that.

What's a good one to start with?

Thanks.
