The Marvels

I'm not surprised that it's not doing well, I mean people loved the Marvel films for its iconic characters, Black Widow, Iron Man, Thor, Captain 'Murica and of course the jolly green giant. These new characters are just not likable, I thought Brie Larson was ok in her first film, but in this she was just bland.

As I said the only bit that peaked my interest was the very end teaser at a potential mcu/xmen cross over/colab

Think it's fine. If your 9 year old watches the first one this one will be about the same.

Saw this last night in a nearly full cinema but it was dire at best. On screen chemistry and interactions were horrible. Big bad was not scary or well drawn out at all and most of the laughs or funny sections felt very artificial. I liked the cat bit but even that didn’t feel like it was done properly.

Most things just “happened” because they had to with little build up, explanation or sense.

It felt like a straight to TV movie at best and not an epic superhero movie.

Really very disappointed in these Marvel movies of late. I re-watched Infinity War after to remind me of how good they have been before.

Heelsvsbabyface summed it up pretty well.

Barbie catered to its target audience and made a ship load of money.

Marvel is not and it's tanking hard, yet of course the media/press will just blame toxic masculinity for it.

Perfectly timed while I have a cuppa.

Oh yeah and plot wise, they basically copied the plot from Space Balls and made it worse.

Not sure 4 adult men running a YouTube channel is Disney's target market.....

Are there really any new plotlines these days?

Ended up watching it this afternoon.

Good: relatively ‘light’ viewing, visuals are fantastic (bonus point: cool sketch sequence near the start), genuinely funny in places, trio has a personality set that’s fairly atypical (quite like that Cap. Marvel herself is understated / reserved in a sea of bombastic superhero personalities), concise run time.

Less good: admittedly a little difficult to follow (particularly if you’re not familiar with the ‘other instalments’) which is probably exacerbated by the fast pace, there is a gimmick around ‘swapping’ that is just a bit clumsy, villain is a typical Marvel ‘non-event’.

Blends in with the rest of the Marvel films to me, fun but not something I’d race to watch again in a rush. Would give it 6.5/10.

Edit: Oh and yes the end credit thing was a fun “oOooOoOoo” moment for the whole audience. Really not something worth seeing a film for by itself but it’s a cherry on the cake I guess, if you’re into this whole ‘universe’ stuff.

Who is their target audience then?

Because it seems to me the only people keeping Marvel afloat are 40 year old men.

You mean people who grew up reading Marvel comics and have an interest in it out of nostalgia.

I mean who are more likely to read comic books, play with action figures and dress up as super heroes as a child? Probably more likely to be 30-40+ year old men who grew up in the 80s/90s when super heroes were cool, before Iron Man kicked it all off again in the 2008.
