* The Metal Thread *

Meshuggah isn't a band I listen to that often, but they are one of the absolute best concerts I've ever been to. I could only get a seated ticket for their show in Kentish Town Forum last year but damn... I was physically exhausted when I walked out of there, the sound was so insanely good that it was really pummeling you, and the light show was incredibly good. It is brilliant to see how well they have suited the light show to their music. And their artwork is outstanding too.
An example can be seen in this video

I saw them at the LA2 years ago (2004-2005?) when they were touring Nothing and even back then they sounded huge live. They played New Millennium Cyanide Christ and it was the heaviest thing I'd ever heard live, like this monolithic jackhammer. No fancy lights back then though!

Tis amazing thats this is a bands worst album,still so gud lolol

It's my favourite in a way, each of their 4 full lengths is a different flavour though. A lot of people only deem it the 'worst' because they're elitist black metal 'kvlt' fans who are obsessed about bands staying 'true' to a specific sound, but seem to forget the whole scene was created by a load of angry/disaffected teenagers who eventually either grew out of it or killed themselves - it was born out of specific circumstances at a specific time - and trying to recapture that over and over just ends up descending into imitation, self-parody or stagnation.

I concede it's pretty much an Ihsahn solo album under the Emperor name though, but to this day I don't think anyone has ever made anything like it.

I do really get annoyed with people like that, I mean, how many people will be in the same mindset their entire lifes? If you still think and feel the same when you are 40-45 as when you were 20 something is indeed wrong with you. You can't make the same music all the time if you are not in the right set of mind for it, specially not within this kind of music. Fair enough if you love an album by an artist, but they have most likely matured or experienced things in life to not wanting to do that stuff again..

Early days yet with Meshuggah for me.

I haven't made my way through all the albums yet.

I've listened to The Violent Sleep of Reason, obZen and Destroy Erase Improve a few times.

First listen to Koloss right now. And this might be my favourite yet

Think I like Koloss because there's a bit more variety. I like my metal to have some quite passages and solos. Which is what Meshuggah lack a little.

Chaosphere is basically relentless. Nothing has a couple of quieter moments, Catch 33 also.

Their guitarist also did a solo album with a jazz drummer which strays outside the Meshuggah box a bit:

Some nice links here! Love Mortician, as well as Kreator. Coma of Souls is such a good album.
