The most disturbing films of all time

Not seen half of the movies mentioned on here but wjile looking at info on Salo I came across a film called 'Cannibal Holocaust'. From what I've read this is quite a sick and disturbing film (even more so than Salo from what I've read). Anyone had the misfortune to see it?

Yep, it’s not very good. I didn't find it that disturbing just a little bit sick in places. A few of my mates couldn’t watch some of the scenes and one was sick because of the gore and animal mutilation. The director and producer were arrested after filming had finished because the Italian authorities thought it was a snuff movie. The scene involving the turtle is probably one of the worst, if not the worst, I’ve ever seen.

Is that the one with Dustin Hoffman ?

Your thinking of 'Straw Dogs' very good film but disturbing! was going to mention it myself :D

I think the worse scene for me is when he accidentally kills the girl

as a child there were a few films that really freaked me out...

Return to Oz - Those 'wheelers' were just plain scary
Childs Play - Really shouldnt have watched it at 12 years old... (nightmares for months)

as an adult, american history x for the win, i even cried at the end.

I can't think of many films which have truly disturbed me in the long run, although maybe that's because I don't watch a lot of horror type films. I've seen a few of the more mainstream ones like RFAD and ACO, and while they have some risquee content, they are not anything I'm going to lose sleep over.

Actually now I come to think of it, sections of "The World at War" are more disturbing to me than any cinematic release, such as footage of holocaust victims having their limp bodies pushed around by bulldozers. I tend to find 'real life' footage more powerful than acted scenes, even if the film is based on a true story (eg Schindler's list).

The only movie that has ever made me really uneasy was Event Horizon, I Spit on Your Grave was pretty funny, but then I watched it with a bunch of mate's when we were 16 and we Mystery Science Theatre 3000'd it the whole way through :D

personally, i thought that was being shocking for shocking's sake, and i didnt really like it that much. if it wasn't for the fact that it was initially banned, no one would give a crap about it now, because it's a pretty bad film. i mean, what's it about really??

After reading through the thread I've decided to watch a few of the films that have been recommended. I've seen A Clockwork Orange, Battle Royale, Cannibal Holocaust, Ichi The Killer, ID, Kids, Romper Stomper and Scum. I'm gonna watch the Dentist tonight (Horror Channel, 23:05) followed by Requiem For A Dream. I've also got Irreversible and Jacobs Ladder to watch tomorrow. A film that hasn't been mentioned yet is Salo by Pier Paolo Pasolini. I read through a few different websites about disturbing films and this constantly gets mentioned. A lot of reviewers haven't been able to watch it all the way through. I'll report back once I've watched them all.
I've just finished watching Salo. It is without a doubt the most disturbing film I have ever seen or ever wish to see. While films such as Requiem For A Dream are about disturbing subjects and films such as Irreversible have disturbing scenes in them the whole concept of Salo is disturbed. I have no idea how this film was ever conceived let alone released.

The film is set during WWII and some children have been captured and sent to a mansion full of the most messed up, disturbed, sadistic (basically f'd up) adults you're ever likely to meet. For the duration of the film these adults proceed to rape, humiliate and torture the children in a varying degree of ways and acts for their own pleasure. One such scene involves the children sitting around a few tables naked. Four naked girls are serving food and one of the adult males pushes one of the girls to the floor and begins to rape her. Another adult male then starts jumping around mooning at the children. I found this quite amusing until the mooning adult pushes the girl who's being raped aside and bends over in front of the rapist and gets raped himself. WTF? Another scene involves the children walking on all fours with dog collars around their necks. The adults make them beg for food while they bark like dogs. It gets worse. A few scenes later one of the young girls has annoyed one of the adults. The adult walks in to the centre of the room, pulls his trousers down and has a dump on the floor. He then walks over to the girl and hands her a spoon. I will leave the rest up to your imagination. What follows that scene is possibly the sickest part of any film I have ever watched. If anyone watches the film after reading this they will see what I am on about. After a few more scenes of men raping men, women raping women, men dressed as women raping women dressed as men and so on they begin to torture and kill the children. This involves holding candles near delicate places, cutting off tongues, picking out eyes with the end of knives and cutting hair. When I say cutting hair what I really mean is hacking away the scalps of the children. A few more children get raped and hanged and the film finishes. These scenes account for about 10 minutes of the 1 hour and 50 minutes running time.

I only watched this film after reading a few good reviews that compared a few disturbing films. It wasn't even a good film.
