The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

Well

I've said this in a million places now but I have 2 sticks of Geil value 3200 in my board and it's great (and it's cheap!) - happy to run at 225 1:1 at very tight timings - CL2.5 3,3,6 1T in dual channel mode

Yeah, use only one stick of RAM to begin with, and upgrade to the latest BIOS before slotting in any more (I'm currently using 1.51b). Also, you might want to disable the Realtek on-board NIC and stick with the nForce one.

Haven't time to read through all this thread right now, so a few easy questions:

[1] The bios. What is the latest version, and where do you get it from? The manufacturers webiste or someone who tweaks these things?

[2] Any major problems still? Did read something about overclocking and SATA controllers. I have a couple of SATA drives and don't really want these messed up.

[3] Is the booting up with one stick only of memory in order to flash the bios (does this require a floppy disc as I haven't got one?) slot dependent or anyone will do?

[4] Is it only Crucial Ballistix memory that is problematic with this board, and what memory types does it support? ie. ddr3200, ddr4200 etc.....

Some people just like to be spoonfed  :)

1 - Use live update for the latest official bios, the utility is on your driver cd. There are also beta versions and modded versions that allow greater Vcore but I don't have the link to hand.

2 - Only the two sata connectors nearest the CPU socket are usuable when overclocking, over about 220FSB the other two connectors will just corrupt any hdd plugged into them.

Also MSI were very stingy with the NB heatsink paste, a more generous application might aid your overclocking.

3 -All the shipping boards don't need to be flashed anymore with winchester CPUs, they have newer bioses.

4- Ballistix isn't the best memory for these boards, though mine does 250FSB 1T so it can't be that bad. TCCD based RAM is the way to go with this mobo though, so thats OCZ PC3200 Rev. 2, Gskill, Patriot, Geil Ultra-X etc...

Just ordered this board, and thought i should scan through this thread, and then thought...

WTF? :( . I didnt order the XP120 because the thermalright site said that it was physically impossible to install because caps were in the way.

Was it hard to install? did you have to bend the caps a lot? ?

Thanks.

This much..

I never done it myself, but apparantly it's best to bend the cap first, else the cooler doesn't sit flat.
A guy on the MSI forums found this out, when his XP-120 was worse than stock cooling :(

I fitted an XP-120 to mine and it was fairly straightforward to do.
It is a bit fiddly but the pictures seen to make it look worse than it is :)

What timings are you running atm? You should be able to run them tighter than SPD settings at 250. Cant remember what I got them down to at the recommend voltage. Just get memtest and try I guess.

I think SPD at 250 is 2.5-4-4-10? you should at least be able to get 2.5-3-3-9

I used 2-3-3-7 1T at 250FSB with my Ballistix, both memtest and prime stable.

Just to echo what Minstadave said on previous page, I removed the northbridge fan and there was a very very small smudge of thermal paste underneath in the middle. About half a centremetre wide, so its def worth slapping a bit more on.

Quick question - is there any other difference between the Neo2 Platinum and the Neo2 Platinum Wi-Fi Edition *apart* from the wi-fi adaptor. i.e. will I still be able to clock the wi-fi version as well as a normal Neo2 Platinum???
