Ok i have no idea what bios my board has but i brought it christmas time and at the moment i am getting no where with my ocing and i belive its because this Bios is crap.

So how can i check which one i have, which one shall i get (whats everone using to get all these great clocks), where do i get it from and how exactly do i flash the dam thing?

well i have the 1.4 bios tried this

ram==166
multi=10
htt=4
fsb=250

result

wouldnt boot why not

ram is geil value 3200

but before i left ram at 200 and set fsb to 230 and left it at that and it booted and ran no probs

also what is spread spectrum

sorry jokester

its a a64 3200 winnie you reckon i have got a mongy chip again my last barton was locked and didnt get much from it i always get the crappy ones

It might need extra voltage to become stable at that speed. It always a good idea to test your memory max overclock and your CPU overclock seperately.

The way I would approach is to decrease the multiplier (you might still need to give the CPU extra volts since the memory controller is on it) and then up the FSB to find how far the memory goes with different timings.

Oh dear! :mad: :mad:

I installed my new kit today, switched it on and all was fine. Thought to myself, why not flash the latest beta bios before I start installing the o/s and mucking about. BIG MISTAKE!

I booted with a floppy, had the bios files on a fat32 hdd, flashed the bios and it wrote fine. Told me to reboot, then the machine just turned off and wouldn't come back on again. I reset the cmos via the jumper, still nothing. Had a ciggy or two, came back and now it just turns on for about 3 seconds and goes off again. Nothing I can do now!

Anyone had this before? I think I'll just send off for a new bios chip and tool and replace it myself, got to be quicker than rma'ing the board.

I had a bad flash on my sisters machine! she was not impressed as she brought it to me to fix something stupid. and I should have left the Original Bios.

So your not alone :o

I'd been looking forward to setting this up for ages and finally got the chance today and stuffed it! If only I'd read the last few posts on the xtremesystems forums, there's a guy on there who used this bios with exactly the same result.

I'm sure someone who knows how to do it would hotflash it for you, I would but have just sold my Neo 2.

I don't often write things about what people do but this has got up my nose "got to be quicker than rma'ing the board"

Why should Ocuk or MSI do a RMA when you stuffed the BIOS, I often wonder when I have had faulty components why when I have given proof that they are faulty that I cannot get it replaced quickly, well no wonder if they are being ripped off by people RMAing parts that they have borked themselves. Put yourself in Ocuk's position how would you feel about giving a new board or refund? Are you aware or rather do you care that these things have to be covered by the profits so we all lose out, in my mind it is nothing short of stealing.

Rant over, I feel better now.

I have had time today to read all through this scenario and I apolagise to Kendo I obviously got it wrong maybe I was having a bad day. It is quite clear he had no intention of any wrong doing.

Sorry Kendo.

Its not as if he broke it on purpose or through any fault of his own, bad flashes can happen, and you have to flash the board to get it working with Winchester, so its not as if MSI encourage you not to flash it, they provide the bioses and software for flashing. He's even trying to sort it himself instead of RMA'ing the board :confused:

I could understand your anger at people who overclock things until they die and RMA them, but often new bioses fix bugs and improve performance, if I flashed to a newer bios provided by my manufacturer and it went wrong I would RMA it (if I couldn't hotflash it).

What BIOS did you use?
I have seen 2 people having the "just turns on for about 3 seconds" problem with the new beta one that's floating around, and yet seen one other have no probs at all. (or so he claims)
The difference seems the way they flashed. Seems it worked OK with winflash.
I am not keen on flashing from a FAT32 partition either.
If you have another PC that will accept that chip you could hotflash it, or even go here.
Lot less hassle than RMA I reckon.

Thanks for the advice and support guys, having a look at that site now. I'm working on my other pc which is a kt7a, but I'll have a look at the bios, might be the same kind of chip for a hotflash, trouble is I need the extraction tool.

Decided that I'm going to get a bios saviour, never risking a dodgy bios update again! I tried the 1.52 beta bios fyi.

And especially for kimandsally, thank you for your comments and hope you get out of the other side of your bed tomorrow - Do you know what RMA means?

Return to manufacturer yes? Well I didn't say return it to where I bought it from and tell them it's broken. MSI will fix the board and charge me for a new bios chip. Fact is it's quicker for me to get a new bios chip sent to me than to send it back to MSI. I never said it wasn't my fault, I know it is which is why I'm sorting it out myself.

If your KT7a is like this, is has a totally different BIOS chip. (top left)

That has 32-PIN DIL BIOS CHIP, and the MSI is a 32-PIN PLCC BIOS chip so you can't hot flash it :(

Your best bet is here for a fee.
You don't have to have a removal tool.
OK it's a lot easier with one, but you can get one out with 2 pieces of wire. (bent paper clips are good)
I suppose once you buy one, you have it for life though.

Sorry I meant kr7a, but it's the wrong chip anyway.

I've had a look at the Neo2 bios chip and got the code from under the sticker. Just ordered myself a bios saviour (had to buy something else as well to make the p&p worthwhile so got an aerogate 1 fan controller)

Going to try and order a new bios chip now!

Hmm there is a place in europe that you can buy a pre-flashed BIOS savior from.
For a small fee, they would have flashed it to a BIOS of your choice. (8,79 Euro)
You would then boot with this BIOS savior in use, and flick the switch and flash your old BIOS.
I'm not sure if I can post a link to it, as it might be breaking the forum rules.

Postage can cost though, and it might take a few days.
